Thank you for the tip, but unfortunately nothing has changed. Reinstalled 5.1.1 pfix=ram, installed upgrade, reboot to create save file open pdial no modem found. Copy working wvdial.conf to /ect/ restart pdial and it correctly shows modem; click on it to confirm existence and am told no modem found. Oh well . . . Confused

If 5.1.1 gives you any trouble then by all means use 5.10 with the Instant Update 003. 5.10 is a very good version.

Yes, I am very happy with 5.10.003. I just need to get the hang of remastering so I can make a striped down version. Sounds like it should be easy - just use the remove built-ins.pet and the remaster tool in puppy control center, but the CD's I produce all go to kernel panic. I just keep plugging along. I really appreciate all you guys who have dedicated so much time to this project. Keep up the great work!

OK, more on the saga of Vala compiling

Without making a meal of it, this is how I got Vala compiling to succeed in Lucid 511.

Installed Playdayz's pet from here:

Then installed this file:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/i386/ ... v/download

At this stage still no Vala compile.

Then decided to use the latest devx from Wary 5 replacing the Lucid 511 devx.

Vala then compiled OK

Valide however is still broken. This may need a re-compile at least.

Anyway, it's now possible to use Vala in Lucid 511. Geany works OK as an IDE for Vala. Would be nice to get Valide working though.

Would be interesting to have a look inside the Wary 5 devx and see where the differences are between this devx and the Lucid 511 one.

Could anyone take this on? There will be a Lucid Puppy 5.1.2 so the devx could be fixed at that time. Going through the devx is a goal for Lucid Puppy 5.2, so someone could stay with it for a while and help out tremendously. Thanks.

luci-218 full install to replay my internet connection problem at this thread on

for each step I made I took a screenshot and they became 27....which makes 85 MB o`pics and 22 MB o`zip for the moment

on 4.3.1 there are over 30 screenshots....

while at 4.3.1 the modem has to be plugged in after startup

5.1.x wants it plugged in before bootup and after pupdial is configured it does not want to be [Test]`ed while at 4.3 series I have to [Test] the modem at pupdial always before [CONNECT to Internet]

luci-218 puppybrowser showed blank pages first so I decided to install the midori.pet (s) that were posted on
page 9 and page 19
that lead to
page for midori and other

( 5 MB full midori http://puppy-development.googlecode.com/files/midori_shared-2.2-93.pet that I downloaded someday after the 24th of August )

starting midori then I encountered first also probs with a blank page but entering "http://www.google.com" in the address line and several times [Enter]key all of a sudden opened the ports or gates
also puppybrowser now showed www.google.com

F-Prot is an on demand scanner so it wouldn't be running unless you started it to scan a particular partition or folder.

I am not sure about Clam-AV--I think it runs continuously. My guess would be it is oK. You want one to run all the time ("on access") and the other to run on demand?

I read that F-prot is not good at detecting Linux virus and that ClamAV is better in that and F-prot is used for detecting virus in another Windows partitions.

So I thought if I have a little time to spare, I could scan my system with both AVs

I am not sure if ClamAV is on access because I use it via the console

I guess, it is similar to F-prot i.e on demand

Maybe I am wrong and someone can correct me.

I can confirm that Clam is on demand only.

From my readings it will be a miracle if anyone has a Linux virus.

I hope Windows users have on access or on execution protection.

Some Wine users use avast!. I use Lucid Puppy and downloaded the debian version and it installed in the same way as a pet. However, see http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 14e#449288
to get it to run.

Those on dial-up should not use it because the daily updates are full (not incremental as with Clam).

For a quick check with Wine I use http://download2.emsisoft.com/malaware/MalAware.exe
which downloads instantaneously and takes some 30 seconds to run.

PS Evidently Linux is not immune to Rootkits. Ubuntu has Rootkit packages, but I read that they are not thought to be very effective.
I use Firefox, and WoT (Web of Trust), NoScript and openDNS for extra, though not perfect, protection.

It's great to have tempestuous around, he fixed the driver issues with

acx, which I have in my old P3 (and playdayz included in 511 at my urgency ) and that P3 has never worked so well with a puppy ootb since the 2.6.15.16 kernel.

Using the latest woof. My aim is to build special Lucid puppy mainly for my special needs with pulseaudio, python, pygtk, stream2ip included for getting wireless audio streaming to Apple Airport Express work.

I can see the installed packages in /root/.packages which I need to install from ubuntu repo. But do I need to know which package belongs to what as dependency. Or can I speciify each package with own row in DISTRO_PKGS_SPECS-ubuntu-lucid. So I would not need to chase the dependency chain. Of course there are a lot of libs which should be listed in the same row as main app, but.. does it do any difference if all the packages are included anyway ?

I am absolutely ignorant how things work in woof.I have used guidelines in the net by BK and from playdayz`s posts along the development. They have been really helpful when trying woof building.

EDIT: What is the best way to check dependencies. Check dependencies installed pkgs goes under the screen, there should be some keystroke which enables to scroll the page down but I dont remember it. Is there other tool to check dependencies ?
