battleshooter wrote:So right Geoff, I do like this, that manual copy step was so redundant... thanks :D Definitely going in the next Vanguard.

I also had need to make a symlink.... oh man, that create symlink's a dream. No need to open two Thunar windows to drag and drop or hunt around for link-to-@#$%. These two fixes... brilliant Geoff. I never realized how much they bothered me till I didn't have to live with it anymore. It's the little things... the little things
Here's a bit of a update with those, In my haste with the "Copy Path" I was getting ahead of myself, no need for a script, just change the custom command to this

Code: Select all

echo -n %f | xclip -selection c
Not that it matters as the Copy Path works fine as it is, but I'll write a script to fix the "Copy Path" a little later.

Edit: see previous post http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 298#823298

Create Symlink script, it's now changed to use two radio buttons for selection and fixed so "Relative" always makes a link in the selected file/folder directory.

I didn't notice that the notification theme was not the default one. Good to know there's Ninix and heaps of other gorgeous notification themes. For now it's Smoke theme.

Yup - DPI was one tweak that has appeared to make a significant difference. After tweaking for a bit more, I'd now consider my initial font issues to be resolved. 8)

Excellent, glad to hear that Moat. Now just to consider should I change the DPI in Vanguard by default?
The current DPI and font size are fine for me. When changing them, I find the Qt apps (example SMPlayer & Clementine) sticking out like a sore thumb :? that no amount of adjustment in the Qtconfig utility can make the font sizes match the vlina theme. The only thing that's standing out atm are the sidebar font size in LibreOffice welcome screen - so huge (like size 14?) compared to the menu font size, which honors the theme font size. Shown in attachment.

Hi @battleshooter/ @Geoffrey can i trouble you with compiling one?
xf86-input-synaptics-1.8.1 is actually included in Vanguard Release 2. I think the last thing I settled on was it was a config issue or something?
As pfind can't find the package, I assume it was included in the "big" xorg then?

Problem with Chromium on a Dell Latitude 6400

#264 Post by mikeslr »

Hi All,

I''ve reported the problem on the kost@s's Chromium-thread, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 872#825872, but as the Pup I attempted to run it under was Carolina-Vanguard, which may therefore be a factor in the failure, I'd appreciate if you have any ideas or suggestions that you post them the Chromium thread.

Thanks in advance,

mikesLr

Hi Mike, have you tried using the deb directly from Chrome's homepage? I've been using 38 from there on Vanguard with no problems.

Hmm ok, noted. I'll look into that. Huh, the "need-to-look-into" list is getting longer than my arm  (That's my fault not yours by the way, I appreciate everyone's faithful reporting ;))
yerc1 wrote:As pfind can't find the package, I assume it was included in the "big" xorg then?
Yep, you assume correctly.
yerc1 wrote:Please see attachment. Thanks for not giving up on my touchpad. :D
Thanks for being persistent :). It's a two way street and I wouldn't have the opportunity to get Carolina working on Chromebooks if weren't for you. You're a pioneer for Chromebook users around the world
rufwoof wrote:No difference for me. Alsa wizard/setup still doesn't find anything (when run after booting and sound working ok).
Ok thanks, now I can check that solution off my list. I'll post back when I can think of something new.
Geoffrey wrote:Not that it matters as the Copy Path works fine as it is, but I'll write a script to fix the "Copy Path" a little later.
Thanks Geoff I'll update that on my end.

Sorry to add to actually-important support requests -- but would it be possible at some point to do a sort of 'service pack' release? I've been thinking about trying Vanguard, but I'm a little hesitant because it feels like I'd have to chase down approximately two jatillion dotPETs to fix little tiny things... and I really don't get along well at all with bugs, even little tiny ones...

...no rush, of course, I'm low-priority here (and I know it!)...

It's not a bad idea. Most fixes we figured out in Release 1 we included in Release 2. There isn't exactly a 'jatillion' of fixes since then because I haven't been working very hard on Vanguard. I wish I had a gazillion of fixes :? ...

The only major fixes and can think of is Geoff's handy dandy symlink creator and copy address updates. I'll certainly keep it in mind though, when I actually have some fixes to include.

Uh... isn't there extensive work in this thread on bugs...? :?

Well, OK, some of it's feature requests (eg Marv's Bay Trail setup) but I personally lump all that together... easier that way IMO.

Went ahead and tried it, and am quite impressed. I daresay it runs better on my netbook than X-Slacko 2.2!

One small UI note -- when it asks about the firewall wizard, the buttons really ought to be yes/no rather than ok/cancel ;)

With a fresh frugal install to /dev/sda1. I was suprised when the apps in the live session did not carry over
into the install but I have not read the whole thread either. Flying blindly into this one.

So I do not know if this has ben mentioned , so I'll just mention it.

I have already over wrote perl installs and gtk-youtube-viewer is the only fail for me. I have not rebooted yet since this install. Been busy installing Audcious and Smlayer and updating Firefox, blah, blah, blah.

Looking cool beans so far.

Lots of room here

Ha! Hey, roky, I was going to try and track down that thread where we were talking about that -- but I couldn't find it...

Given that it's fairly responsive on my system, it should be just fine for yours -- especially since there aren't many people /less/ patient than me! :P

Oh -- and, speed isn't everything, Vanguard looks awesome, too... oddly enough, the clock font tickled me the most. I love Microgramma... (if that's not real Microgramma -- which it probably isn't, the real thing costs money for licensing -- it's a very good clone) From the title bars on down, it's a very aesthetically pleasing Pup IMO. I'm way into warm colors (red, yellow, etc) rather than cool colors (blue and green) but, meh, that's a personal thing -- doubly so because everyone seems to think that the future is blue and white (no thanks!).

I'm going to think seriously about switching from X-Slacko. Have to try Vanguard out a bit more, tho...

Well, OK, some of it's feature requests (eg Marv's Bay Trail setup) but I personally lump all that together... easier that way IMO.
I suppose, just not much of late.

Regarding Marv's Bay Trail setup what exactly are you after? The kernel requests? Because they were included in Release 2.
starhawk wrote:Went ahead and tried it, and am quite impressed. I daresay it runs better on my netbook than X-Slacko 2.2!
That's always a compliment. X-Slacko is an excellent distro so I'll always be flattered when Vanguard is compared to it. That said though, Vanguard is Carolina so rg66's handiwork is all over Vanguard as well.
starhawk wrote:One small UI note -- when it asks about the firewall wizard, the buttons really ought to be yes/no rather than ok/cancel ;)
I can do that. Wrote it down for next release todo list.

Thanks for the feedback as well as the reports rokytnji. Touchscreen working eh? That's really cool, think you might be the first to test a touchscreen and mention it here.

into the install but I have not read the whole thread either. Flying blindly into this one.
I'm surprised too, was this a once off thing, or does it happen every time you create a new pup save?

Ahh yes, I checked it's source,http://www.smokey01.com/carolina//pet_p ... -carolina/, it is missing. Maybe Geoff has a back up or removed it for a reason. I'll let him handle this one.

Nah, if it aint broke, why fix it?

Definitely not the real Microgramma. It's Michroma, included in Carolina by default. I like changing the clock font, just gives that bit of flavor.

Is purple a warm color? That used to be the original Vanguard theme. I suppose I fell into that future trap of the blue and white color scheme when I changed from that to the current blue theme. I was thinking red or orange for the next release though. If you'd like to use the previous purple theme, you can select it in the XFCE Theme Manager. It's creatively called "First Vanguard Theme".

No. I betach it may be a fubar on my end I bet. I need to start over and rinse and repeat, because beers and installs don't mix sometimes.
So I probably screwed up. No biggy.

I use fubar as a slang term from my USMC days. I am not going to leave a link to it.
Otherwise everything is Okey Dokey on my end.
These netbooks like your distro.
Thanks for letting me know I was reporting something legit also when it came to gtk-viewer.
No problemo.

Thanks for the impromptu art class starhawk. So I guess the purple theme isn't up your alley. No matter, I'm sure you'll customize to your likes.

Ok, sure. Let me know if it's not on your side.

Hey Geoffrey, I think I've fixed the xlock issue. I compiled the latest xlockmore and the screensaver seems to start normally, but when starting it manually with "xlock" or "Xlock", it demands a password, and I don't know what password it's looking for, do you know how to change this?

That's normal, running xlock or Xlock should bring up a window to "create a password" if Password Protect isn't enabled in screen saver settings. They aren't really suppose to run on their own.

Ahh, I've explained this poorly. When I say demands a password, what I mean is the screensaver starts then demands a password without me setting it. Or, if it asks me to create a password, xlock ignores what I set, giving me "invalid login" instead.

Ah ok, that's not normal. Your pet works fine in X-slacko, I don't have a copy of Vanguard at the moment to test. I keep meaning to download it but haven't gotten around to it.

Hey starhawk (or anybody else) - maybe give these two themes a try - my personal tweaks of Aurora and Bluebird. Although green + sand/tannish, it's a darker, olive green (leans towards the warmer yellow side of the spectrum). Easy on the eyes. I too can't stand the pale, pastel blues that are so currently common... reminds me of those sterile, hospital room-ish default Win 7 colors!

I go straight for Rezlooks-Human (the XFCE equiv. of GNOME2's Humanity theme, which I grew to love with some VERY old versions of Ubuntu)... thanks for the offer and effort tho.
