Firefox 3.6

#1 Post by Strampke »

Hi,

Finally I have 4.3.1 going with internet connection.
With Puppy 2.13 I was able to download Firefox, Puppy guided me to click somewhere and I had a Firefox running.

On 4.3.1 I download Firefox 3.6, click, unpack to /temp and I don't know how to go foreward.

Must be very simple, but I cannot find any solution forum or PET

You can find a Firefox 3.6 PET here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 52&t=30434

Meanwhile, assuming you've downloaded Firefox for Linux from Mozilla, what you got was a tar.bz2 archive. Uncompress the bz2 file, and you have a firefox3.6 tar archive. That can be extracted to wherever you want Firefox to live. (I put it in /opt) It will create a Firefox directory and directories below it where the various pieces live. You actually run Firefox by running the firefox file at the top level. It's a wrapper shell script that sets things up and calls the firefox-bin file which is the actual Firefox program. You can create a symlink of the firefox script into /usr/bin.

Firefox doesn't care where it is installed. The shell script handles things.

If you want a desktop icon, or to use Firefox as the default browser in Puppy, a bit more work is required. Making it a desktop icon will depend on which window manager you use. I use Xfce4, and haven't looked lately at how to do it in JWM.

That is exactly what I did. I unpacked everything in /tmp and clicking on the firefox shell script doesn't do anything exept that the picture shivers a bit by which Puppy is showing that I realy did click on that symbol.

I think DaveS has it right about the missing dependency, and needing dbus.

You can confirm by opening a terminal window in the directory and invoking firefox from the command line as ./firefox. If it fails because of a missing dependency, you'll see a message about it in the window telling you what library it can't find.

Just do a file search for dbus. It will show up if it is there.

@DaveS
Your instructions in the link were clear and made installation simple.

Although I coudn't find the update menu thing, Firefox appeared in the menu even without rebooting.

The font links are dead. You could do me a favour by pointing a new link.

B.t.w. How come Firefox has nice fonts in XP and not in Linux.

Windows fonts are non free, so cannot be distributed with Puppy. To make them pretty in Puppy, you need to download the ttcorefonts. You can find them through the links on the page I gave you. Oh Oh, gposils site is down so they dont work, you are right. I will try to find another link for you.

You can force Firefox to use the Puppy fonts and get great display results. Go to edit>preferences>content, and on the 'default font' line, click the advanced button. Set your values to these

Image

Make sure the box 'allow pages to choose their own fonts is NOT checked.

That gives much better results, except for the address and the text in the tabs.
Anyway, thanks

One more question: how do I grab a portion of the screen to be displayed like you did in your post.

Menu>Graphic>Mtpaint-snapshot screen capture. Follow the on-screen prompts. This will snapshot your screen and load the image into mtpaint where you can crop it, scale it, etc.

For fonts used in menus and tabs, edit userchrome.css found in /root/.mozilla/firefox/*******default/chrome
