How to install iso to USB pen drive?

#1 Post by fixit »

I looked and did not find a built Puppy program to burn an iso to a pendrive.

Up to now I have used Windows versions, but there are hit or miss.

What do you recommend for Puppy ?

I tried Unetbootin but the download had no extension, so the File Manager had no idea what to do.

It was a binary file.

Pen drive Linux site has an app for Windows that works well. Just scroll down to the bottom of the list in Universal Installer and select "other" distro.

Worked great for me.

I looked under other distros and did not see any entry that looked like a USB installer.

What is the name ?

Here is what I have used -- Universal Installer, Unetbootin, and Rufus.

Thanks.

I suggest you boot from puppy on a cd.

Install to a usb stick using Puppy universal installer. - under the setup menu.

I agree with you.

So, you dual boot also to either Puppy or Windows ?

But, could you think about this ?

Linux would like new users, so why not include a built in program that would install any iso to a flash drive ?

It is not rocket science.

I spent half a day looking for Linux programs to do so.

I found none that worked, including unetbootin.

:-)

Nope.....since I use several computers, some of which I can not change, I boot from USB....have never seen any reason to put Puppy on the hard drive.

New Linux users most likely would be on windows before they tried Linux...so the app I mentioned does what one needs to "try" linux.

I am posting this from a USB stick loaded with:

Code: Select all

dd if=Fatdog.iso of=/dev/sdc ; sync
dd is GNU https://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/ ... ation.html and built in puppies.

As it is not rocket science to could just use it (or find Barry's GUI for dd in the menu)

Note, does not work for every iso , just for hybrid ones like Fatdog 8) .

have you tried LiveUSB

#11 Post by Ms Kitty »

try this site...

http://www.linuxliveusb.com/

it is a free download, and step 2 MULTITUDES of distros to choose (MINT, UBUNTU, and more)

Use this step to pick on the link for the version matrix (pick on P to go to the PUPPY distros)

I recommend reading the site completely before beginning...there is a lot of info!

YES, there is a PUPPY!! In fact there are 8 puppy links...6 for x86 processors and one each for atom and celeron...

I have not tried it, since I created my own USB in a roundabout way...but the site has VERY comprehensive instructions (even a primer about how to fomat, and why to use certain formats...

Ms Kitty,

I already have the iso.

I am familiar with the site.

Windows has file download managers that are far better at getting error free downloads than the ones built into Firefox and Seamonkey.

A good program will do a CRC-32 checksum on downloading files which eliminates the need to use the MDA 5 value.

I have looked but have not found any for Linux.

Take care,

Andy

I found wget to be very reliable, I use it for my not-trivial downloads.

I tend to think of it like the 357 magnum of download programs. :D

Heres a question, is DD what is going on 'under the hood' of the installers for puppy?

could I use it for say tinycore isos?
