Hello!
I am trying to save a bunch of old, old machines for some wonderful kids of a social project I volunteer for here in Brazil.
I am a naughty Mac user with some Gnome experience but not much, so please be kind with me.
I am doing some trials to see what can run in those old fellows.
The idea is to wipe out Windows and leave only a very lightweight Linux version that can browse the web and have a nice Office package. That's all.
I tried Debian with Xfce. It worked but really slowly.
Now I am trying Puppy Wary, but the machine does not recognize the install cd when booting.
I downloaded the ISO here http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/wary-5.3/wary-5.3.iso
and mounted in CD before burning.
Why doesn't it work?! Did I need to install something beforehand?
I read the threads for hours but could simply not find the answer to this really dummy question...

hello not sure how you burned your cd but make sure you are burning an ISO image to the cd and not just copying the file to cd i like to use image burn for this its free and works well ! www.imageburn.com hope this helps !

What does that mean?

If you look on the CD from a Windows machine, what do you see? A single file named wary-5.3.iso or a several files with names like vmlinuz?

How did you install Debian on these machines? From a boot CD?

Did you burn the CD from Windows? What program did you use? Partsman's recommendation of Imageburn is a good choice.

Puppy starts loading but then it stops in this line:
"Performing a 'switch_root' to the layered filesystem... Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!"
And it's been like that for 2h.

I installed Debian from a boot CD, and in that occasion I already wiped out the Win XP. But now not even X server is running properly anymore, so I'm afraid Xfce is a bit dead :'-(

ok i am definately not the as smart as alot of others in this forum but i am tryin to help as much as i can what are the pc specs ? did you check the md5sum of your download ? are you able to try on another pc ? post back there is some of the smartest people i ever met in these forums ! we will help you get wary workin

Just to be clear - this happens when you boot off the Live CD?

Try Partsman's suggestion of using the CD to boot off a newer machine. Do you get the same error?

Sorry, yes, I was booting off the live CD when I got the error with Wary.
I don't have another PC to try it on, but I did try to burn another CD with Wary and it also did not work....

Alright...! I don't know why Wary did not run, but I managed to run Retro Precise.... at least from the CD.
Now I am trying to install it in the hard disk.
What's this thing about not being a good idea to install Puppy in the hard disk? Is that true?
How faster would Wary be in relation to Retro Precise?
My dinosaur here is a Pentium III 600MHz with 173MB ram.

Then a better starting point might be Puppy 4.3.1.

I find that 4.31 seems to have a heavier load on the hardware (and 5.25 Retro runs on my 333MHz laptop)

I got Puppy running and I am delighted to see how faster it is in relation to Xfce.
However, it does not seem like there is a Portuguese language package, which is one of my requirements for the kids here.... :'-(
Did I miss something or that's indeed the case?
I am happy to help with translation if no one is working on that yet.

The Pet package was developed for Puppy 4.3.1 ... not sure which Puppy you are using as you did not say, but it's worth installing to see if it helps.

Also, notice the post by Shinobar who has been active in developing multilingual Wary 511, a separate version of Wary Puppy which has Portuguese language support. You might want to download that version and have a go at installing it.
