Hello

I have been viewing the Puppy Power section on the forum and a suggestion that caught my eye there was the one about putting up a web site on Puppy linux. I have been using Puppy Linux since v4.0 exclusively for about two years now, and I am presently using v4.1.2 HD install, As it works very well for me I see no need to change to another version.

The idea I had for a web site was based on v4.1.2. Some of the programs downloaded from the forum sometimes fail to run on v412 because of missing dependencies which then require a search for the require dependency . As v412 this is my preferred version, my idea was to make programs plus their dependencies available in the one place for users of v412. Plus programs from the forum that run without any further dependencies.

I am well aware there is an abundance of Puppy Linux resources on the web and there may be no need for this. As this is only an idea at present, I thought I would run it by you guys and would be grateful if you would give me some feedback on whether it would be worthwhile implementing it.

New Puppy 412 dedicated website

The above posting has been like an itch I have been unable to scratch. So I have just went ahead and created a website based on the above posting.

It can be found here http://412collection.neocities.org The list of packages is by no means comprehensive at present but it will grow. If there are any other users of Puppy-412 who have found a solution to a particular package and would like to share it with other users, pleas let me know through the forum or at http://412collection.neocities.org

Hi Tuxtoo, good website, I like it, lots of useful stuff there.

I'm using 4.3.2, version3... the updated one, it flies on my old laptop, works like a charm, and I can run the latest Seamonkey without a hitch.

I actually prefer the 4x series puppies, I've tried about forty puppy versions... addicted, I've lost count, but the 4xseries seems to have everything I want.

I have a lot of stuff for the 4.12 series Puppy, as I built PAW on it, and Mediapup and Pupitup and Hansamben were based on it as well.

4.12 was slackware based, like Slacko, and gslapt worked well...
I still have several 4.12 Puplets I use daily..
Good focus... 4.12 was really good...

I still regard Puppy 412 as likely the best modern version.
Some people like 2.14, 3.01, but I find 4.1.2 to be quite useful, I can't remember if it had built in Tcl/Tk like >=3.01

I kinda wonder if anyone has thought about a puplet using 412, but updating the components perchance. Then again, I don't know how much updating would need to be done for a good system.

If it's alright with you both I will mirror your puplets on 412 collection.

However, my pentium 4 PC finally died and had to go the recycling centre and I bought a barebones pc base unit with no OS to replace it.

Therein lies the problem, the motherboard an Asus P8H6-MX R2.0 dual core job with the newer UEFI BIOS and I am unable to get Puppy-412 to boot from either CD or USB although Wary boots and installs to HD with no problems. I suspect the hardware might be too new for Puppy-412. Although not being an expert in these matters, I'm not entirely sure.

I do have a netbook that can run Puppy-412 ok but I just find it a bit small to use for extended periods. So unless I can get Puppy-412 to run on the new PC this may be the end of 412Collection . Just when I was getting into the swing of it and thoroughly enjoying my self with this project I may have to give up on it which is a pity.

May have to change the name to Wary Collection, don't know, lets see what the future brings.

I also have MANY pets compiled for, and on, 4.12.
I can post them to my meownplanet link if you like.
As for 4.12 booting on your new machine...
I have run PAW (4.12 based) on virtually everything..
IF your Wary is Frugall installed... (Dont Full install... )
For me, just for S&G , do this.. (manual frugal install)
I have 26 frugal installs...

Boot Wary..
In /mnt/home:
Copy the Wary directory, and rename it 412.
Delete the contents.
Copy the 412 ISO contents into 412.
Got to /boot/grub and open menu.lst
Copy the Wary entry, and paste it below itself.
Change every Wary to 412. Including "Title"
Reboot....

I guess your Foxit Reader won't support user's saved annotations and highlights, as per all Foxit's Linux versions? If so, could I ask if you think about compiling a pdf viewer/editor that will? No big hurry, but would help turn old laptops into great tools for a mobile office.

Does it simply not get to the bootloader, or does it by chance hang or panic during boot on 412?

I should look into the primary differences between Wary and 412. Perhaps Wary has a newer Kernel and that's what you need for your box, in that case one could see how the newer kernel may work with 412 (someones gonna operate on this puppy )

Perhaps a mutant 412 with Wary's vmlinuz may do the trick.

sc0ttman's "Akita" is a Wary x Puppy421 hybrid cross (http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=67811). Maybe if you find Akita12 working in your most recent box, it might give you clues on solving your hardware limbo?

3.x was slackware based, 4.x went to T2. 4.2 was a community edition that did include tcl/tk + gnocl. Pupngo and Akita are mostly 4.x based with 2 very different vectors in the lightweight direction.

Wasn't 3.x technically just slackware compatible (It was still puppy)?

4.x did go to T2 from what I remember though, and then 5.x is Puppy built with Woof on Puppy (Puppies all the way down )

And for puppyt, Akita sounds like that could be a very good puplet for folks who like 412 but have newer hardware.

yes, 3.x used the same kernel and was binary compatible

I will give your solution a try after I have exhausted all attempts at a HD install. I've nothing against a 'frugal' install it's just that I prefer a HD install.

Here is what I have done/tried so far.

On booting the live CD (Puppy412 and same from Puppy431) from the PC's DVD/CD drive I get the following error message:
From what I observe, all goes well until the above error mesasage then the CD drive stops turning and no activity from the CD read/write indicator light. From this I conclude that the boot process stops because it is unable to see the CD drive. Although Wary512 boots normally with the CD turning and activity from the CD read/write light.

From what very little knowledge I have, could it be something from the init script.

I have tried the following boot parameters with no effect:
Copied the contents of the live CD to sda2 and booted with
Tried sc0ttman's "Akita-12" and got the same error as above. I am now at a loss on what to do next. All suggestions welcome.

Update

I have found a solution of sorts. Installed Puppy-412 on to a usb memory stick, plug into PC. Switch on PC. Enter BIOS at startup, select 'Puppy on a stick' from available media shown in BIOS. HOORAY, Puppy-412 boots on my new box and seems to run ok, except for . . ..

But, yeah there's always a but. Internal HD or DVD/CD does not show on the desktop and using pmount fails to see them, although plugging in my 500GB external usb drive shows as does other memory sticks. So all is not lost as expexted.

Another bummer is that I seem to not be able to connect to the internet, which is not the end of the world as I will only be using 'Puppy-412 on a stick' for testing pets. This should be enough for me to keep 412collection going as I still think it is useful and so long as the web stats keep showing this to be the case.
