dial up modem problems

When I try to connect to the internet using my dial up modem I get the following:

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.53
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
--> Sending: ATQ0
--> Re-Sending: ATZ
--> Modem not responding.

My modem works fine with WindowsXP. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would bet that it is a WinModem (which are not really hardware modems). Linux (historically) has had some difficulty driving WinModems.

My faster laptop has an internal (Win)modem, which Puppy 4.3.1 doesn't see. I found a hardware PCMCIA modem, which Puppy does see. I haven't yet tried one of the special 4.3.1 versions, to see if they recognize the modem.

But I assume that you have been here (where the distros are located):
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... uppylinux/

It might be worth trying one or more of these these:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... l-puppies/

Or... Can you tell us what kind of machine you have? (even better if you can physically identify the modem -- brand, model).

And which version of Puppy are you using?

According to the control panel I have an Agrere Systems PCI-SV92PP Soft Modem on COM3. I just downloaded the iso file from the front page yesterday so I have the current version booting from CD. I have not looked at the alternative versions you posted but I am doing that now. Sorry if this is a double or triple post.

Okay I have looked at the links you posted but there doesn't seem to be any text files to tell me what is what so I wouldn't know which distro to try. Any suggestions?

OK, a quick search show this as now owned by LSI:

http://www.howtofixcomputers.com/forums ... 88046.html

http://www.lsi.com/networking_home/netw ... index.html

This has a link to a "manual", of sorts embedded... http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 307AAICpZV

So I Googled for "lsi sv92pp linux driver", and found this which has a good deal of info about your modem (unfortunately, it doesn't list a Linux driver). However, it is apparently a WinModem:

http://modemsite.com/56k/sv92p.asp

It looks like you may need to dig around here: http://linmodems.org/

Tracking down Clark's page (broken link above): http://xmodem.org/modems/pci_list.html

And I think that this is your modem: http://xmodem.org/chipsets/agere/agere_SV92P.html (which may indicate "crapola!" for your modem)

BTW, at Ibiblio, I wonder if pup-431-k2.6.21.7-scsi-intel_modems.iso would work? (my old laptop, a 333MHz, runs this older kernel -- though I haven't tried dialup on it, as it uses a PCMCIA wireless card). I'm finding references that indicate that your modem (and perhaps machine) are quite a bit older.

Is your machine a desktop, or a laptop? If one of the other versions doesn't work, and some modem expert doesn't chime in, you may be looking at picking up a modem. If so, make sure it's Linux compatible:

Wow, thanks for all the hard work you have put in for me.

My machine is a desktop.

I will try the links you gave and download the iso you suggested but I will wait to see if anyone comes up with any other suggestions before I invest the time to download it (56k modem ~10 hours). Thanks again!

If you're using the latest, Lucid Puppy......... it doesn't really support winmodems.
This thread may be of interest to you:

Believe you're going to need a Puppy with an older kernel.

Okay great, I will try Puppy 4.3.1 and let you know how it goes. Thanks to the both of you!

Excellent link, James!

This would seem to indicate that he may not need the Retro version (which I believe may have a larger modem set installed, in addition to the older kernel).

Okay, I'm embarassed. Turns out I was using 4.3.1 all along and I just spent 12 hrs downloading it again.

My machine isn't too old, I bought it in the vista era although I had XP installed instead.

Any suggestions for what version to try next? I can't afford too many tries because my IP will charge me when I go over time limits.

Would it be possible to just borrow modem drivers from a different version, and if so how would I go about it?

Okay I'm now following this discussion over here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 0&start=60 to see how things turn out.

Do you have a flash drive? And does your local library have open internet access? You might be able to go there and download some ISO images to try at home.

robotz,
Your modem sounds like the kind that the latest wary (0.9.6) can handle. The AGERE modem may need the agrsm/agrmodem driver, which has 3 variants. Wary is the first puppy to support all of them.

But there is an alternative. I developed the 3-variant support on a 4.3.1 puppy, so we could try that along with the driver packages instead of your downloading all of wary. I see from the following list:
SV92PP
PCI Vendor ID=11C1, Device ID=0620
PCI Vendor ID=11C1, Device ID=0621
PCI Vendor ID=11C1, Device ID=0622
PCI Vendor ID=11C1, Device ID=0623
that yours is associated with one of the new drivers in wary and in my dotpet packages. Just let me know how you want to proceed - wary or some updates to 4.3.1.

Serial /Harware Modem

Hi Robotz:

If you have a desktop save your self endless grief and buy a serial/hardware modem. They give you a much more more reliable and somewhat faster connection while freeing up system resources at the same time. Not only that but it will work with ANY linux distro no matter what!

I bought a brand new USRobotics modem the other day for 20.00 and that included the USB to serial adapter . Look under hardware for my post on incredible modem buy. Not long ago the cheapest external serial modem from USRobotics, the best in the biz my opinion , was close to $80.00.
I should not tell you this but I got the agere modem in my Tablet PC to work by installing Wary 060. It might work on the retro 431 but take it from someone whose first experience with Linux was setting up dialup on Ubuntu 9.04 and puppy 431 , I spent countless hours to tackle a program that 20.00 bucks solved in 5 .

I made it work, I even found a Dell Ubuntu modem driver for a machine they once offered with Linux for free, I had already paid, and wasted 20.00 on a linmodem driver I never did get to work. But when I bought an antique USRobotics 33.6 faxmodem and flashed the chip to v.92 56l down , 48k up I stomped up and down on the winmodem.

Buy the serial modem, plug it in, open pupdial be happy! . For windows run the disk and for most other distros including Ubuntu download gnome-PPP which is used like pupdial .

Agere PCI-SV92PP freeze

Wary 5 has worked with every dial-up modem I've tried but one, an Agere PCI-SV92PP.
Wary is supposed to work with this one, and indeed the connection wizard detects it,
but when PupDial probes to verify it is present there is a complete system freeze, and after about
10 seconds a dialog will say no modem found, the freeze remains and a hard shutdown is necessary.

The same applies to Puppy 4.3 with rerwin's modem packs. The machine
is an HP s7310n, not mine so I can't (at the moment) test hardware.

I wonder if something like this would solve your problem:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6825134002

I would double check for Linux compatibility (and/or that it is truly a hardware modem -- but I think most serial port modems are). At least one reviewer states Linux compatibility.

There are also PCI modems, but avoid anything that says "winmodem" or "soft modem" -- the rest you will have to research. Typically the sub $20 modems are probably Winmodems. The pricier ones may be hardware modems.

Many years ago a friend of mine swore by Zoom. I always had good luck with US Robotics. Had (well, I think still have...) a old (very, very old) Everex that worked great (well, that was 2400 Baud... :lol: )

This might be a better route, unless you're playing with the modem for the fun of it...

Yeah, that's more like it, at least a little longer before I try a known good (winmodem) spare.

Wary really works great in this area... I'd like to know if the OP has had any luck
with the latest version of Wary, or if this agere model simply doesn't yet work...

I have a different agere but it also did not work with puppy 431 yet worked with wary 510. Robotz tried 431 but not wary. Session tried a wary but could not verify working hardware on windows. I never had a system freeze while trying.

Puppy 431 will not detect this agere in question at all until this step:
rerwin wrote:Assuming the packages are installed as peebee instructed, when you boot up and see the "no modem" message, click on the "Internet by dialup..." icon in the connect wizard to start pupdial. In pupdial, click on "CHOOSE" and then on "ERASE" and "Okay", then EXIT pupdial and reboot.

Although this seems unnecessary (since there is no selected modem to "erase"), it will cause a script to run to select the appropriate driver for your modem. Then reboot again.
Then 431 behaves as wary, listing a modem initially but then completely freezing after probing.

The modem works in XP.
