First, I want to say many many thanks. I've been using classic pup RC3-version for about a year on an old windows 98-era sony laptop. Love it. I think this is a great project. I've also installed it on a few relatives computers. I look at this thread occasionally and am always impressed at how helpful everyone seems.

Two questions/requests:

1) Is there a recommended version of Wine? I looked at wisdom seekers but don't see anything.
(I'd like to use it to try to install msoffice97. I managed this on another computer running Lucid 5.2.--I know its blasphemy in these parts but openoffice and abiword wreak havoc on the hundreds of footnotes in my manuscript)

2) Any nooby-friendly tips on installing pianobar?

Explanation: pianobar is a console version of Pandora--a popular music streaming site in the US. Pandora is a flash-heavy resource hog. But I've got pianobar going on a different machine with lucid 5.2, and it is great.

I tried installing the pet from here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=62581

After intalling in Classicpup, when I run pianobar I get:
'Glib_2.7' not found (required by pianobar)

Is this a difficult fix? (keep in mind that I'm still a noob)

Thanks in advance.

I was able to get wine 1.1.23 working on rc5 using information found here

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=26717

I used it to install an older version of Quicken. I've never tried msoffice in wine so don't know if this is what you are looking for or not.

Hi MHHP,

Thanks for sharing your experience.

One question: Why didn´t you go right to 2.6.18.8 kernel?. BarryK already patched this kernel with squashfs-3.3. Although the unionfs version he used has some bugs and your squashfs patch is newer, that kernel version is very stable.

Long time ago I used Barry´s source and found some workaround for the unionfs problems. I posted my founds here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=58858. Maybe you could share your knowledge there and continue my experiments in 2.14X.

Greetings,
clarf

I let Firefox auto-update to 4.0 b9, the result was that it quit working. See pic.
Took the easy way out, I installed FF 3.6.13. :) Working fine now.

They must be changing the way that they compiled firefox, I'll put a compliant in, really updating glibc again would be so difficult, I was lucky last time, really you shouldn't be able to do that in the first place. I might just have to compile firefox every once in a while.
Thanks for the heads up.

Ditto my ditto. Firefox automatically updated on my new install of 2.14x. It was that same helplessness I used to feel back in my Windows daze, there was nothing I could do (not a pity party, it's my attempt at humor).

At first I was wanting to replace Firefox with SeaMonkey but now I have a need for a late version of Firefox. I have gone from being intrigued with 2.14x to liking it quite a bit. I am going to wait a day or two before I install 3.6.13 in case someone chimes in with another suggestion. Is there a way to disable updates in FF 4.0?

Hi Guys

I've been complaining at the Mozilla developers forum, lol they haven't been liking it much either, Basically any Linux distro over 4+ years old Firefox support will be dropped, Because they are added WebGL to Firefox and somehow they think that a newer GlibC than 2.5 is needed for that. It doesn't make sense but they are going ahead with it, Either when FF4 final is released I'll compile it, Or I might take a stab at replacing GlibC once again, I figured We were lucky when I managed to change GlibC version from 2.3 to 2.5, That was a puppy first, Usually you shouldn't be able to do that, I might give it a shot once again.

But First I might have to take a couple days off, My wife and I had a daughter last night, She had to have a C-section so for the next bit, she's in the hospital and then I have to take care of her when she gets home.
The baby girl was really big & healthy 10 pounds 1 ounce. :)

Another option is changing browsers back to Seamonkey and giving it a theme. I made such a fuss at the mozilla forum they locked the thread, lol serves them right!!. Sometimes I get a bit too passionate about linux I guess.

Hello, clarf :)!

To answer your question:
I've been thinking about how to upgrade the kernel to sfs ver. >=3.1 (proper, 214 has some 3.1rc[1|2]), and also whether it would be feasible to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.18.8. Kernel 2.6.18.1 that was used for 214[-|r|X], 216(1) and 217(1) were patched by BK and all the links to the original, complete, sources, patches and all, seemed dead (puptrix.org, e.g.); I had some patched sources of K2.6.18.1 stashed away, and ttuuxxx provided some more at his smokey01 repo.
Regardless, I wanted to (at least in the first go at it) keep all the original BK-patches to the kernel, so as not to risk loosing any support for older hardware that was working, thus I manually patched BK's K2.6.18.1 (already patched with sfs-3.1rc?) with sfs-3.4.

AFAIK, BK's K2.6.18.8 was compiled way later than the K2.6.18.1 used in the original 2-series puppies, in a woof attempt at pup218, and judging from the file name of the patched sources, there could be some patches omitted from this later version.

I have started looking into how to upgrade the kernel in 214X to K2.6.18.8, while ensuring all the original patches are preserved (comparing the patched sources of kernels used in 214/216 and BK's 2.6.18.8 with vanilla sources of 2.6.18.1 and 2.6.18.8) - might have a go at it in a week or two.

OTOH, if someone has a link to (or can provide) the complete kernel sources of K2.6.18.1 (of puppy 214 or 216), patches and all, I would be very much obliged :D :).

Cheers :)/
