Works for me now.

Puppy law 1.
If you really want testing, just say it is the official release.

Pidgin

#87 Post by tlchost »

Can't seem to find any pidgin that works with 5.7 on a bootable usb drive.
Maybe one needs to be made for 5.7 ?

Whilst that's a PAE version, I suspect if you open a terminal and issue a command of

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep pae

you'll likely see a return (i.e. have a cpu pae flag and hence have a pae supporting cpu)
Thanks, rufwoof, it indeed returns a flag to indicate pae compatibility, will try your suggestion soon.

Not really a bug, but maybe something that needs to be talked about.

If you are using an SSD (Solid state drive).

Is SSD trim working in Slacko or any Puppy by default?

Does SSD trim need to be activated?

Video upgrade wizard - test - nothing for my card/kernel

Update PPM - video upgrade wizard - NVIDIA upgrade available. Download and install and ..... problems. Quick flash of about 10 lines of directory (or file) not found when I drop out of X and run xorgwizard, then black graphical screen (hardshutdown as Ctrl-Alt-Backspace doesn't do anything obvious).

Tried reverting to prior saved savefile, expanding savefile space ... only to repeat the above.

Reverted for present back to prior (nv inbuilt) savefile.

Slacko 5.7 PAE, AMD64 3500+, 1.5GB RAM, frugal DVD booted, Nvidia GeForce 8xxx (old 15" CRT monitor).

Looks to me that whatever install process the NVIDIA upgrade uses, its not putting things where they're expected to be. Puppy's menu is being updated to show NVIDIA program installed, but clicking on that results in no apparent activity (i.e. likely the same file or directory not found errors occurring in the background).

PPM shows just i686 versions of the latest NVIDIA drivers, no latest PAE

After some retries/investigation it looks like :

Downloaded via the Video Upgrade puppy (jwm) menu option and there's no sufficient disk (savefile) space check. End up with mostly zero sized /usr/bin/nvidia* files

Install the latest i686 package via PPM however and it prompts for insufficient space, so expand savefile SFS and retry and it all installs OK.

I did have some grey screen outputs from youtubes with the latest install. That looks like its not nvidia however but rather flash. Update to the series 11 flash (I was on 10 series as the flash install menu item suggested there may be problems with latest versions under AMD's) and the grey flash screen problem disappears.

Seems that slacko still not friendly with intel Atom processors.

Slacko version of wcpufreq doesn't turn on CPU fan. I had this issue since 5.5.

Currently i'm testing slacko 5.7 (PAE version) on my compaq cq-10 netbook (Atom N450 1.66Ghz), before sending this version to my current main PC, a toshiba w/Turion x2 processor).

On 5.6 the video upgrade for it (has an AMD Radeon 3200HD) causes a kernel panic even with the correct version either from AMD or Slacko (12.6) while Windows version got a correct one (but is x64).

Which version of Catalyst downloads slacko 5.7? I know that Radeon 3000 Family has limited support on both OS (f*** AMD)

In the other hand, my netbook is running with a CF-SATA adapter (w/a 8GB Kingston CF card) and is faster than 5.6 in all aspects (even when it saves RAM to pup_save). However, i desire to control the save2flash behavior because is annonying and heats up my netbook (RAM module has no fan or heat sink).

Something you may want to look at.

Trying to get VPN working in Slacko 5.6
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=92572

Not sure if this is a problem also in Slacko 5.7
If issue persists, follow these posts.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=92572

As i upgraded from 5.6 i'm not sure if the /bin/ip issue is present (i patched it before upgrade).

menu->System->Puppy Event Manager->Save Session

Set the save interval to 0

This turns off auto save.
Will now only save at shutdown or (USB flash drive installs) when you select the save icon on desktop,

Problem with nvidia/nouveau and 5.7pae

#95 Post by peebee »

Slacko 5.7pae crashes on my desktop with nvidia graphics.

Boots fine from a frugal install, but if you do:

System -> Hardinfo -> Summary

you get what in M$Win world would be a BSD except in Puppy its a speckled screen of death

Yeah @Peebee, that a video sync issue for which, like you, I have not found a work-around when it occurs, except a cold start, reboot, and rerun xorgwizard to use VESA.

I've also tried to affect sync by:
  • monitor off-on
  • video cable out-in
In some of the PUPs I get this with Noveau as well. The nVidea cards in PUPs are a nuisance with various monitors.

I compiled the latest NVIDIA-Linux-x86-304.121.run proprietary driver
and it's working fine on this pc.

So far at least.

EDIT:
On another Slacko 5.7 pae install I added the iStart extension to
Chromium, it works well.

I think the issue is using the Nouveau driver.

Try the "Video Upgrade Wizard"
See if it will give you a Nvidia manufactures driver to use.

Nouveau driver, for me, has never been very good with any of my Nvidia hardware.

I have read that the Nvidia technical staff is starting to help with development of the Nouveau driver. Maybe that driver will get better?

The problem is that the nouveau driver is chosen as default.....and hard crashes are not new user friendly.....

Realtek Wifi Firmware Not Found

#100 Post by DrSunshine »

Slacko detects and loads the module for my Realtek wifi card but it cannot find the firmware.

I have a Toshiba NB505.

Code: Select all

lspci -k:

Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n Wifi Adapter (rev 01)
Subsystem: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8184
    Kernel driver in use: rtl8192ce
This is the right module to my knowledge.

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep rtl8192ce:

rtl8192ce 55442 0
retlwifi 69782 1 rtl8192ce
rtl8192c_common 41788 1 rtl8192ce
mac80211 175139 3 rtlwifi, rtl8192c_common, rtl8192ce

Code: Select all

dmesg:

rtl8192ce: Using firmware rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin
rtlwifi: Firmware rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin not available

Code: Select all

iwconfig:

lo: no wireless extensions.
eth0: no wireless extensions.
Currently in Slacko 5.7, /lib/firmware/rtlwifi is a relative symlink to /lib/modules/all-firmware/rtlwifi/lib/firmware/rtlwifi

In Slack 5.6, it was directory with the *.bin files in it. No symlink.

I tried replacing the relative link with an absolute path link. Same condition described above.

I tried deleting the symlink, and copying the files from the destination directly into a /lib/firmware/rtlwifi directory but this causes a kernel oops when interacting with the interface.

When I tried copying the Slacko 5.6 /lib/firware/rtlwifi directory and replacing the symlink, it boots fine but when attemping to interact with the interface a kernel oops occurs. Not that I really expected two versions to really mesh.

I cannot think of any other workarounds to attempt, but the finer details of kernel/networking escape me.
