Bonus! RNDIS works!

#81 Post by Alley »

Unexpected bonus - RNDIS works, so I'm able to tether to my Windows Mobile phone (using its internet connection sharing) to get internet when out of wifi range - I was expecting to have to dive into a messy recompile for those drivers -

I'm still getting the major CPU overuse; which means this thing's running really hot as well. Is that a side effect of the Cairo Dock? If so, can it be disabled?
I also get a crash if I try to add anything manual to the Cairo Dock - it locks up when I click the browse/find file button. Any suggestions? Can I add them manually through a config file?

With NoACPI won't things like CPU scaling be disabled in Puppy? is that why the CPU is thrashing?
I am getting no where near that cpu usage, @ idle I get about 5% acpi=off affects everything pci=noacpi affects irq routing
people
with broken ACPI BIOSes. If only the ACPI interrupt routing part is broken,
'pci=noacpi' should help as the documantation states:
Try running top in a terminal window and watch the cpu usage there. I found the monitor on the cairo dock taskbar was not really refreshing.

I have also altered the initrd so that puppy dows not load into ram, this speeds bootup by about 5 seconds, I may post this file soon.
To stop cairo dock from running just open your home folder and go into the startup, look for cairo dock and delete.

Will try to confirm cpu scaling is working.

cpu

#83 Post by Alley »

Using Top I get about 15% avg adding usr and sys. Not as drastic as the widget but I can definitely tell the machine's working harder than with the other version, just due to the heat factor.

Thanks, that info helps on acpi.

I've tried in Ram and not - I don't mind the extra boot time as it seems to make things more responsive afterwards.

Thanks for all the help. Do you duplicate the problem adding programs to Cairo dock?

Yes cairo dock is very picky, stable as long as you don't mess with it :)
Fun to play with though.
You could disable cairo and switch to jwm just exit to a prompt type "xwin jwm"

cairo update

#85 Post by Alley »

I'm getting there with it slowly -

Turns out the problem is not in adding the launcher but adding the icon for the launcher.

Specifically, the "open" button to browse for the icon is what is locking things up.
The workaround is to type the actual path to the icon instead of browsing to it, that seems to work.

Yeah something I figured out probably would have been a good thing to mention :)
Thanks for sticking with it.

Oh yeah if you completely crash Cairo dock and you know what you were doing (what launcher you were editing)
Go into /root/.config/cairo-dock/current_theme
and delete the offending launcher (you can add it back once cairo loads)

Hi Craig,

posting from a friends aspire one, unadulterated

What is the procedure for puppyfying thiis little web book?

There is no CD, only a plugin 2gb card [SD?] in the right-hand port & USB socket

Do I need to download and save your remaster to the 2gb card or a USB stick, & how do I do an install from then....?

Do you recommend a full or frugal install?

Do I need to repartition/create folders, or something?

Sorry if I didn't read all posts, only there were 3 threads.....

Have you/anyone had any luck with 3G HSDPA USB - an ICON225 on Orange?

My friend is laying in hospital & I need to help, if possible, thanks

Any quick howto will help,

Aitch :)

Burn to cd boot on computer with cd drive. Use universal installer to install to usb stick.

Boot aspire from usb stick

and follow these directions 1/2 way down page.

Cairo, HSDPA

#89 Post by Alley »

Thanks, Craig -

I did play with JWM - in case anybody else tries it from reading this thread, you definitely need to remove CairoDock from startup first as they fight - and if you want to go back to the way things were, use "xwin openbox" from the prompt as puppy will NOT reset to openbox at your next bootup -

and the "exit to prompt" from the gui didn't work for me - but ctrl-alt-backspace does of course -

Aitch - I'm using HSDPA with AT&T, but I'm tethering with my Windows Mobile 6 phone so my steps may be slightly different from yours. Since yours is USB, you may get lucky and it uses RNDIS drivers like mine. If that's the case, plug in the cell modem first, click "Connect", then go to the network wizard. You will see a third network adapter, on mine eth1, using module rndis_host. Click the eth1 button, click Auto DHCP, and you should be connected.

If you don't see that third network interface, go back to "Connect" and use the "Internet by Wireless GPRS" setting, but you will need some carrier-specific info about proxies, logins, etc to enter into the wizard using that method. There are several threads on GPRS modems if you end up having to use that method.

Good Luck!

Ah, Christmas time in Germany, happy memories of my childhood. Miss the food/songs and sledding in the snow to the gummybear store. Must locate the old albums.
At least it is cooler outside today, 80 deg F yesterday

Cairo click

Craig, found a reference to the problem with Cairo not showing up until after that first click -

haven't tried their solution yet as I'm not sure what all I'd end up needing to reconfigure -

does compiz works?

#95 Post by bigotefalso »

Hi!

This is my first post here. I'm so glad there's a Puppy version for the Aspireone. I don't speak English perfectly but I'll do my best.

I want to run Compiz-fusion, but it needs xfce, kde or gnome. I could install xfce, there's no problem whit that, perhaps compiz needs 3D acceleration and I just cannot make it go. I've tried whit Ripple (that has compiz by default and 3D support for Intel cards) but it doesn't work. :(

My question is: how do I get 3D acceleration for Aspireone? Is there any pet I could use? do we have it already enabled in this puplet?

Thank you!

Greetings from Mexico!!

I cant believe how incompetant they are, about writing a dependable BOIS.

I've tried this version too with same result, I'm back using the previous one.

I'm starting to wonder if the EEPROM isn't too cheap and looses its content ???

Not to mention the missing extra RAM access...

I'm using the "macles" BIOS :

http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/07/flashing-bios.html

http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/view ... f=24&t=903

Plug in the usb stick for re flashing.
Just unplug battery & AC plug, then replug them in.
First press Fn + esc then turn it on while holding those keys for a few seconds.
After 2 minutes it will self reboot.

Note: I keep the BIOS stick handy, as this loss of BIOS still happens about twice a month.

My cairo-dock does not auto load anymore

#99 Post by nitrobanshee »

I somehow lost my cairo-dock, it quit loading on startup. The script to start it is still in the startup folder and if I click it it starts up. I know about the clicking on the desktop before it will come up, but clicking the destop does not start it anymore.

Thanks

Run Cairo dock from a prompt I suspect it is crashing.

If it is crashing you have a couple of choices

1) Delete save file and start over
2) Go into /root/.config/cairo-dock/ Current theme (or default theme) (not on my aspire so going by memory)

Try to remember what you changed on the dock and find that plugin and delete it, or delete everything in that folder and when it starts choos the aspire theme.

Cairo dock does not crash well but it looks good.
