HPLIP for HP All-in-One support

#81 Post by nic2109 »

Hello everyone. Like many people I have an HP "All-in-one" device combining printer, scanner and copier. CUPS is fine for the printer but does little (nothing?) for the scanner.

For CUPS Barry added a PET package called 'HPIJS' with many HP printers, but could this be replaced with 'HPLIP' please? This driver package, developed by HP, includes HPIJS has but also has XSANE for scanner support.

I have tried it (installed from the HP website) and it works just fine but I don't have the skills to create a PET package.

As this type of device is increasingly popular then it would be nice to have built-in support.

Update :- not sure why I wrote
(installed from the HP website)
and what followed - having a Senior Moment I fear. What I actually installed was the .PET. Sorry for misleading you all, and thanks for the responses!

lluamco has created a .pet for HPLIP that works with Puppy 2.15, 2.16, 2.17 and possibly 2.14. Be sure to read Billwho?'s step by step instructions if you aren't using Puppy 2.17.

Good Luck! :P

I'd like to see an easy way to set up two monitors, but I'm probably one of only very few people who feel like they need two, so don't bother if it's too much of a pain. I just can't get the suggested changes to xorg.conf to work. Nemmind, my problem :D

Thanks for what people have done so far though, ALSA finally remembers what my default sound card is in 2.17, and it LOOKS a helluva lot more up to date.
I've read that Elmo's the Antichrist.
If that's so, what are the tellytubies?

1. Latest stable ntfs-3g with all build-time-detected dependencies also updated, as listed at http://www.t2-project.org/packages/ntfs-3g.html.

2. FDisk'ing and formatting integrated into Puppy Universal Installer ( I don't ask for much, do I...) (but, #1 should at long last make this *almost* feasible, except for shrinking a pre-existing ntfs partition, due to the dirty ntfs trick reported by cagliostro at http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=20591)

3. Stop Puppy from offering to create a pup_save in the event that PUI has just been used from the live-CD to create a "normal" install.

I would like for Puppy to have built in screen savers and an easy way to add new ones(/usr/share folder).
I need help with my forum. LINK:http://www.programers.co.nr/

CUPS+smbspool

#87 Post by Matu »

Hi all!

Fortunately we have CUPS in 2.17, but printing with SAMBA on a Windows printer is still not easy unless you install the smbspool package mentioned here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=12196
It would be nice to see smbspool in the next puppy.

Best,
Matu

Would it be possible for the next Puppy to be able to recognise hardware up to hdg for us poor people with too many controllers.
A better explanation of the problem here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=21028

cheers

Poor Eyesight, request for clear themes and dual monitor

#89 Post by veronicathecow »

Hi, having had two detached retinas and cataracts in one eye clear text etc is a must for me. So any chance of a really clean theme for each Puppy variant.
Also dual monitor would be very handy as I can then get more screen acreage 8-)
Many thanks to all Puppy supporters.

I started a thread asking users for help on that matter:

Actually, 2.17 comes pretty close to getting mine right. Except it configures the Server section for my dual head ATI card rather than for the Nvidia card and one head of the ATI card, and it doesn't make the second screen section. So a couple quick tweaks and I'm working.

@Dougal: I was going to run those scripts for you, but when I installed my tv tuner it threw the old Nvidia card out of whack. I haven't sorted out yet whether I just fried the card or what. When I was setting up the tuner, one webpage said it might have problems sharing IRQ addresses, so that might be it. I need to just open up my box and pull out the tuner to see if the Nvidia kicks back in, but first I want to resolder the wire to one of my case fans so I can stick that back in while I have the thing open. Of course, that needs to wait until I get a small soldering iron, because my soldering gun is too bulky, which means waiting until I get around to taking the 45 minute walk to the mall (too cheap to take a bus :) )

But at least I can watch Stargate in the mean time! 8)

I don't like the web browser based printer interface. It has done nothing but fail for me. The old inteface worked better.

I would like to see a smaller puppy with less and smaller progs to keep small iso.
Because "big progs" can be downloaded via PETget.
Replace seamonkey with opera and dillo.

Keep only usefull progs : Gtail not so usefull ? Same for Regexpviewer. Gdmap not so usefull. Same for prename .

Keep only one program to do one thing :
One editor is enough ? uxplor.
why 2 file finders ? 2 files editors ? 2 calculators ? 2 cd ripper ? 2 dvd writer ? Keep only one prog to do all theme settings.
--> make menus simpler for beginners.

Many progs in PETget package manager :
Maybe they can be classified into categories ?

I totally agree with this suggestion, but Puppy 2.18 seems just don´t go.

Then i would like (a dream maybe or just a petition that hurts no body) a very stable version like 2.16 to be updtated like 2.14R was. To have a 2.16R (or whatever) updated version using the same kernel (Puppy 2.17 never ran in some of my old machines, where 2.16 runs perfect).

i´m a poor linux user and i really don´t care the slackware compat, then puppy 3 series is not what i want. I need a very small and fast version with some new things: i like the sfs compat added in 2.17 version and the fix made to pmount (it mount a drive 2 times faster). I also like some new features in 2.14R (noram boot option).

There is a 2.16CE Project, it´s very good but CE seems to be very big and have things for everybody (but i don´t like or need many of them ), a 2.16R would be a nice approach to be added the 2.x series. It could add some fixes from 2.14R and 2.16CE.

Hope is the last thing that you can lose. Thanks for read this post to the end.
