Slacko 5.7 - March 2014

#61 Post by Billtoo »

My 4gb flash drive install worked well but the save file was too small
so I made a new manual frugal install to a 2tb usb 3.0 hard drive.

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Wed 12 Mar 2014 on Slacko Puppy 5.7.0 Linux 3.10.32 i686
2.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09)
oem: Intel(R) Sandybridge/Ivybridge Graphics Chipset Accelerated VGA BIOS
product: Intel(R) Sandybridge/Ivybridge Graphics Controller Hardware Version 0.0
X Server: Xorg Driver: intel
X.Org version: 1.12.4
dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (507x285 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ivybridge Desktop x86/MMX/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.4
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3550 CPU @ 3.30GHz
Core 0: @1600 1: @1600 2: @1600 3: @1600 MHz

I'm giving Fluxbox 1.3.5 a try, not bad so far but still learning how
it works.

I have a peculiar problem with slacko 5.7 non PAE. A frugal install on my hard disk boots up perfectly well on first boot. After creating a save file & rebooting the computer, everything goes well till copying files to ram. But X takes at least 6-7 minutes to load up & the response to any mouse command is extremely slow. Precise 5.7.1 & Lupu5.2.8 have no issues & they reside in the same partition of my hard disk. The hard disk is SATA & dual boots WinXP & Puppy Linux. SDA1 is the windows partition (NTFS) & Puppy resides in SDA5 (NTFS).

This problem occurs if a 3fs savefile is created. On creating a 2fs savefile everything works fine.

Athlon 64 3200, 3 Gb RAM, ATI Chipset motherboard , video driver loaded in precise ati, In slacko radeon.

Slacko 5.7.0
Frugal install to USB flash drive
Initial boot

Grub4dos Bootloader config has several menu entries.
menu->System (2).
menu->Setup (1).
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Does this still happen after several reboots?
Any other version of Slacko on computer?

I have seen bad installs do this type of thing.
Puppy resides in SDA5 (NTFS).
NTFS formats can get fragmented.
Could do a defrag, using Windows, to eliminate that possibility.

Google Earth

Google Earth

Those of you who use this program will experience an- Invalid HTTP request when you use the 'search for a location' function in Google Earth itself.

There is a 'fix' here (until a permanent solution is done.)

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=87493

I use:
Google_Earth-6.0.3.2197-luki.sfs (same version in the 5.7 PPM only in a .pet there) Tried downloading the PPM .pet but it wanted over an HOUR of my time to download w/dependencies so I opted for the .sfs version which I already had and use in several puppy's, it works very nice.

EDIT: Two Places To Get .sfs version:
http://www.smokey01.com/saluki/sfs/
http://www.datafilehost.com/d/a5a90a31

You'll 'probably' need the fix no matter the version.

Re my savefile problem further up this thread: I've tried the second machine with the new USB stick and there are no problems so I conclude it is not a bug.

Shutdown delayed by "stray" mounts being unmounted

#68 Post by davids45 »

G'day 01micko,

A couple of very minor oddities with Slacko5.7 (and late 5.6.x Slackos) installed on a desktop running Frugal and Full:

After mounting an android device with the mounter (menu = MTP- mount MTP and android devices) and then unmounting it by running the package again, I immediately get the green 'safe to remove' dialog box. However, on shutting Slacko down, I see a slightly delayed shutdown with a text message about unmounting a stray mounted device, being the android phone or tablet. Both my android phone and tablet give this result.

Likewise, after mounting a Windows shared drive on another computer on my home network with Pnethood (run from the menu), and unmounting the share within pnethood before quitting pnethood, I get the same message during Slacko shutdown, this time the text message being there is a stray mounted directory on the other computer that's causing the delay.

Slacko does shut down OK but maybe takes an extra 5-10 seconds because of these 'strays'.

Occasionally (i.e. only happened a couple of times and I can't reproduce this  ), my 20+ partition drive icons across the bottom of the Slacko pinboard display sequentially disappear (one after the other, starting with sdb15 and running down to sda1), taking only a second or two. I can only recover them by re-starting X. Possibly happens when running a program like ffconvert or libreoffice. Full and Frugal affected.

Otherwise, Slacko-5.7 running very well.

So thanks for your excellent work,

David S.

Wondering if any way this is related in system's behavior.

Understanding this, (and running Live from DVD), when the Android is plugged into the system, a pop-up occurs which is NOT the expected MTP pop-up. Further this leads to confusion as whether the POP-up is related to MTP in any way. Lastly, just wondering if what is described causes some system flag(s) to become set and are not undone upon abandoning use of the mounted system mount-points.

Question
  • Is this MTP issue pointing to a need to re-think how system behavior is to occur now that Androids and MTP devices are poping up all around us with content we want to transfer?
In our past, the current system's implementation was geared (rightfully so at that time) around cameras being plugged in to exchange content. Now we have many things such as MTP devices beyond what we had when it was just cameras.

Maybe its time to consider how this should all come together to ease user understanding and use.

Comments or advice for how users should approach this dilemma for Slacko users.

Note: Below pic is what I get when I plug the data cable into the USB port.

What does this post mean bigpup? There are a bunch of drivers and the installer *should* work (video upgrade from menu) and if not by searching PPM.

I'm not seeing the same as you (I'm seeing the same as bigpup (I think)). The video upgrade says something like no drivers available for my card/kernel and PPM doesn't show the same list as yours (3.10.5 being the latest IIRC). I repeated after downloading the latest PPM update with the same result.

The existing NV support seems good to me already. On a previous version of 5.7 (non PAE, I'm now running PAE), upgrading to NV drivers resulted in worse results - youtubes were grey until the screen was scrolled etc with the official NV drivers and there was bleeding of flash through the desktop background (a ln command I found somewhere resolved the flash bleed issue), but both of those issues were fine under the puppy nv version).

Slacko 5.7 first boot.

#74 Post by killapup »

G'day all,

I've just booted the new 5.7 (without using my 5.6 savefile) and, for the first time, Slacko did not recognise my wifi. I'm very disappointed, one of the things that drew me to Slacko puppy was its ease of wifi setup.

Since starting with 5.3, Slacko has never missed a beat with my laptop's wifi. I even tried my Belkin dongle and it couldn't it either, what has changed in this latest version?

At this point, I won't be installing this one, I'll keep using 5.6 for the moment. Of course, I'll keep an eye on this forum for fixes.

I'm using the non-pae iso burned to cd on an HP Presario V2000 with 512M of RAM, puppy runs really well on this unit and never has an issue with wifi, till now. If it helps, it is an AMD Turion64 running at 1.8Ghz.

Can anyone share why this version may not be finding my wifi, thanks.

Slacko 5.7 non PAE on my nvidia FX 5200 machine and have updated the repos but confirmed I am not seeing the nvidia drivers for this kernel in Video Upgrade (just get a "nothing available" splashy) or PPM. Obviously I can see them there in ibiblio in the browser.

Doesn't support my Belkin wireless USB either. I had to patch the kernel with the driver. This Slacko PAE 5.7 derivative includes that patch
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=92616 - might be worth a try. Note that that derivative has no inbuilt firefox (browser), but does have a file to download/install a portable firefox. It also has ROX set to use double clicks rather than single clicks.

Whilst that's a PAE version, I suspect if you open a terminal and issue a command of

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep pae

you'll likely see a return (i.e. have a cpu pae flag and hence have a pae supporting cpu)

Manual upgrade of another frugal from 5.6.5 to 5.7...... other than needing to reset the desktop icons there were no apparent problems.

Looked in http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/

packages-puppy-slacko14-offical

This does not list any of the Nvidia drivers for kernel 3.10.32

So, PPM and probably the Video upgrade wizard, does not know they are in the puppy-slacko14 repository.

Not sure why they are in the repository, but not listed in packages-puppy-slacko14-offical

For what it's worth, after updating the PPM nothing but drivers for the older kernels here as well. And a polite message from the Video Upgrade Wizard that no drivers are available....
