First, it's not true that the file doesn't have to be renamed, at least not in my case. When I downloaded the 0022-215.sfs file to the /mnt/home directory, it didn't show up in Bootmanager. When I changed the name to ...216, it did show up.
Yes, any sfs filename with three numeric digits like '_nnn' will get screened out if it isn't '_216'. This is to avoid version compatibility problems. What I meant was any non-versioned sfs file, like 'openoffice-2.2.0.sfs' does not have to be renamed.

I dont know what exactly you could do about this sfs loading. You may be better off downloading the office version built for 2.16 instead. It should make life a little easier.

If I manually mount the sfs file, the applications work perfectly.

I have tried this now on two different laptops and have literally obliterated my pup_save file and started from scratch, just to make sure that I wasn't missing something.

Nothing works in terms of getting openoffice to show up in the menus.
Sounds like this has been quite an ordeal! Maybe some clarification would help here.

Is office showing up in the menus with your manual mount? (I'm curious what commands you used to do the manual mount. A simple
'mount sfsfile.sfs /mnt/data -o loop' wouldn't merge with / so the menus wouldn't have any new entries.)
Have you tried another SFS file to see if it will mount normally? Please specify the full file name of the SFS file as it appeared on the site you downloaded it from, so that we know exactly which file you're working with.
From Barry's post I infer the SFS file should either have no '_nnn' in it's name, or end with _216.sfs when using it with Puppy ver 2.16 and I think that would also be true for Puppy 2.16 NOP (Nearly Office Pup)
AFAIK the only office SFS designed for 2.16 or later is here;
http://www.pkagfiles.net/sfs-files/216/
There is an sfs-README.txt in the same folder which notes, "The SFS files in this directory are suitable for Puppy version 2.16 or greater, except that if the filename has "_215" (for example) in it then it is only suited to Puppy version 2.15."
Thank you for keeping us up to date on your progress. I'm working on my own SFS files and learning quite a bit about them here. And thank you Barry for your input as well. :)
Take care,
TazOC

Sorry for the long delay in responding to your post, but I've been off Puppy for the past three weeks.

No, Office does not show up in the menus after manually mounting the sfs file. I use a simple mount -o loop [filename] [mount_location] to make it work.
Have you tried another SFS file to see if it will mount normally? Please specify the full file name of the SFS file as it appeared on the site you downloaded it from
No, I have not tried any other SFS file. The full name was 0022-215.sfs. I changed only the 5 in that name to a six in order for it to show up in the bootload manager.

It's hard not to conclude that the bootloader/sfs process doesn't work as expected, but I'm open to other suggestions as to why I'm not able to get it to work. As for progress, there has been none and absent any new ideas, I wouldn't expect any.

Thanks for your interest.

No problem, thanks for the update. As mysticmarks suggested you might try one designed for Puppy 2.16 here:
(Edit 2 Aug) http://www.pkagfiles.net/ then click on sfs-files
Have a look at the sfs-README.txt there also if you haven't already. That's all I can think of right now.

hi,
I downloaded the sfs file from here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=17338
I did this:

Code: Select all

#1. move/save the sfs file to /mnt/home
#2. reboot
#3. open console/terminal and type ---> fixmenus
#4. restart the window manager icewm
I find the +mnt+home+003-rc1.sfs

Now the silly question.
how can I run the program?
Is there a possibility to get the open office in the menu?
thanks for the help

In the "System" menu you will find "BootManager configure bootup" -- run that and click "Choose which extra SFS files" and you will see a list of all the SFS files at /mnt/home and you choose which ones you want to load.

[Edit 11/6] The name of the file should be something like:
OpenOffice-x.x.x.sfs, where x is a number. You can get it here:

OpenOffice-3.0.sfs 159M http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/jb4x4/OpenOffice/
OpenOffice-2.4.1.sfs ~140M? http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/
OpenOffice-2.2.0.sfs 98M http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... modules-3/

Hope that helps,

hi tazOC,
I did so, but there's no effect. that does'nt matter. There's the entry of the openoffice sfs-file in the "BootManager configure bootup", but it won't be mounted.
Is there a file, where the entry can be edit manually?
Is it possible to edit the fstab and the rc.local to mount the file right?

I don't think editing fstab or rc.local would help in this case. But I'm not sure I understand what's happening. I assume you have previously saved your settings to a 'pup_save.2fs' file at shutdown. If not do that first.

What version of Puppy are you in and what is the name of the sfs file? Is it on the right panel of BootManager: SFS Files? Be sure to un-check 'Ignore above user selection...' at the bottom, reboot, type 'fixmenus' <Enter> in a terminal and restart JWM. If you still don't have Office in the menus, please check the md5sum on the SFS and compare that with the md5.txt from where you downloaded the SFS.

What install do you have, full? frugal?

Can you show a screen shot of the bootmanager's window with the 2 panels?

When you say it isn't mounted, do you actually understand, and are sure that it isn't mounted?
What happens if you open a terminal and run

Code: Select all

soffice

hi,
here it is.

Code: Select all

soffice
brings command not found.
clicking on one of the sfs file brings

Code: Select all

unmounting *.sfs file
and at the first time doing this
"... unable to unmount" or so
but the second click says mounting successful.

thanks

OK, the contents of your /mnt/home look weird to me. I think you are running a "full install" of 4.10, in which case none of the .sfs files in there are doing anything, including pup_410.sfs and pup_411.sfs. You can't use an .sfs in the normal way with a full install - you can either mount it and copy all the files into your install, or you can mount it and run it from the mount point - for this you would probably want to add a line to one of Puppy's startup scripts to mount it automatically, and make symlinks to the executables and the menu entry files (If you want to do that we can describe how).

If you put the appropriate lines in your menu.lst file you should also be able to boot a frugal install of 4.1 or 4.11 which would use the .sfs and .2fs files shown there - but I suspect you need to clean it up and just use one install, whether it is full or frugal.
