Weird thing just happened.

I plugged in an Android phone via USB, and it brought up the install partition for the MTP stuff which shows up in Puppy as an optical icon on the desktop.

Then all the drive icons disappeared and now they won't stay up.

I can restart X and they pop up as usual, then they disappear and don't come back until X is restarted.

Any ideas?

I have no interest in eye candy, so if the Desktop tools Chtheme or JWM can do the job, can someone please tell me how. If these tools can't, then Please Mr. Dev, at least embolden the white text to improve visibility for these failing eyes.

An afterthought: How about adding a Refresh button to PartView?

Hi,

I did extensive test of "TahrPup 5.8.3 beta " with external packages such as Google Earth, Skype, etc. against retro Precise 5.7.1

Excellent, the prime thing I miss on an 32bits version, is a non PAE kernel, as for retro Precise 5.7.1.
Why? Because, lot of Celeron processors do not support PAE kernel.
Failed to boot on a Celeron laptop, contrary to retro 571

Comments & suggestions.

* In start-up config add sound speaker and microphone configuration.
* add lxrandr, for people like me who uses an external monitor from a laptop, also a prompt up config for that (people might not know where to find it).
* my desktop monitor 1366x768, my external monitor (1280x1024) => icons to the right of the screen do not show-up on external monitor (same with Precise), should be placed <1024 px.

Missing audio extension support, i.e. no default opening for:

.m4a & .m4b
.opus
.ogg if audio codec is opus
.flac
.eac3

Failed to install

* guvcview
* xbatalarm
* flowblade 0.14
(didn't tried Kdenlive 0.98, nor Pitivi)

Update wishes
* openssl
Heartbug & later are ignore by Ubuntu!!
See all Debian Security list https://www.debian.org/security/2014
* ntfs-3g to 2014.2.15 (works for me on Precise)
See http://www.tuxera.com/community/release-history
* Geany 1.24.1
* mhwaveedit-1.4.23
* mtpaint-3.44.85
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 73&t=81136
* pburn-4.3.6
(If you need the pets, I can upload them)

Quid:

* no battery alarm (xbatarlarm)
* ROX default with thumbnail both image & video preview
* termit-2.3.0 as replacement terminal
* I encourage you to try to replace AbiWord & Gnumeric with OpenOffice 2.2.x.
Why this oldy?
* Fast, not as today heavy LibreOffice
* Additional features, such as .ppt support
* Light
But if runs under Precise, fails to run under Tahr

If you are willing to review a suggestion,@Shinobar has posted a resolution that affect many/most early Celerons and PentiumMs.

Have you taken a moment to review his suggestion and post the CPU/model/motherboard where his suggestion does NOT apply?

The solution that @Shinobar offers will allow any Celeron which benefits, the opportunity to run ANY 32bit PUP; no matter if it is PAE or non.

An excellent solution presented to 32bit PUP users.

ffmpeg missing from TahrPup-- install winff

Posted: Sun 17 Aug 2014, 18:13

Hi all,

Brown mouse called to our attention that TahrPup does not include ffmpeg. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 353#787353. 666philb proposed one solution which, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 088#788088 however, may be too advanced for a lot of us. The link provided by 666philb, and a post by watchdog http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 685#751685 explain that Ubuntu (and I think debian) are now employing the avconv fork from ffmpeg.
Suspecting that TahrPup might already include the avconv's version of codecs, I typed the following in a terminal:

avconv -codecs

which confirmed their presence, That being the case, I followed the instructions I provided when I thought erroneously that ffmpeg had be deprecated: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 674#751674. Note in particular that winff's preferences have to be changed to use avconv and avplay.

Videos converted using winff run fine in VLC, TahrPup's default, video player and gnome-player.

hi sketchman,

is the bug repeatable? can you try booting live and plugging your phone in to see if it happens again.

Thanks a lot for all the work!
hi live, thanks for testing.

for tahrpup there's a selection of kernels to choose from ... including a non PAE and also as mentioned by gcmartin a patched PAE kernel that may work on older equipment (3.14.13) http://ftp.nluug.nl/ibiblio/distributio ... r/kernels/ just unzip , copy the zdrv.sfs and vmlinuz over the default ones and reboot.

i'll include lxrandr in the next build

guvcview is in the PPM and works fine... i'll add it to quickpet. (please update tahr using quckpet before installling or you'll break tahr!)
xbatalarm was in earlier builds but i removed it as it seemed to interfere with the puppy build process. i'll put it in quickpet
flowblade etc will need to be packaged specifically for tahrpup
openssl should be a fixed version i believe
i'll add updated packages when i do a new build

openoffice is huge 144mb and won't be included in tahrpup... there's an option to install it in quickpet

it would be nice to change the default terminal .... although it needs to play nicely with the PPM

cheers

sorry using apt-get in this tahrpup will probably break it... there are some experiments though http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=94101

I will check and report back.

Can this be useful in meeting distro developer needs?

As this PUP goes forward, a discussion has erupted to tackle an issue that many developers have longed for. ... getting service changes out to the user without having to rebuild a distro for user testing.

@BarryK over the years has toyed with it and if it was simple I am sure he would have addressed it.

@ASRI éducation has built a developer utility to allow developers to do just that... allow users to get service.

Questions
  • Would this approach to service have applicability in this PUP to speed testing phases?
  • Would it provide a good means for developer(s) to gain needed feedback?

@666philb

Xbatalarm my mistake(or mess up :) ) it works fine.

guvcview
OK from PPM
Fails from QuickPet: Error, package guvcview 1.7.1.pet failed to install

Fails from PPM (OK in Precise as external packages)
* Calibre, although old in PPM
* Kdenlive, although old in PPM
* Pitivi
* flowblade, although old in PPM
* winFF
* didn't try LO nor KingSoft Office
(Artha & wordnet are OK)

Would be nice to add thumbnails videos preview, as in puppy_Pupjibaro (you can change language to English to have a peek)
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 15&t=92892
"it would be nice to change the default terminal .... although it needs to play nicely with the PPM"
FYI: Termit with dependicies is only 450Kb, it's in color, natural copy&paste, tab windows, etc.
Missing audio extension support, i.e. no default opening for:
REM: Only file association issue, as they can be played from VLC or SMplayer.
"i'll add updated packages when i do a new build"
Very good news, thanks

OK, I've never done it, so here what I did.
  • Boot of Tahr beta
    Unzip download in /mnt/home
    overwrite vmlinuz by unzipped one
    Reboot
Well, if the procedure is correct, then immediately I could notice something wrong as during boot my laptop screen started to flicker, than no output on external monitor and finally an inactive touchpad.
I would recommend as an alternative to have as for Precise a PAE and a non PAE download iso.

Thanks

Hi All
I complained here
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 16#794716 about the opacity of the Partview and Pmount displays. rcrsn51 invited me in the next post to look at his Partview 2014 here
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 60#642160 It is what I now use.

There was still Pmount.

That's now fixed-sort of. The forum does not allow for posting HTML so I have to send it as an attachment -

If anybody have interest in CAD ,check that, a Freecad 0.15 SFS .Look almost fully functional on TahrPup. Does need a decent machine to run,they say .Its big,but smaller then libreoffice...

Tahrpup 5.8.3 feel rock solid ,with savefile in folder.

Nice work !

Successfully switched in kernel 3.15.4 to the base tahr-5.8.3 with k3.14.11.
I tried to go online without updating ndiswrapper for the new kernel and as expected failed. As soon as I installed the ndiswrapper-3.15.4, I was online.

@666philb
Thanks for the instructions, ndiswrapper and links.

Firefox ousts Seamonkey from menu

Posted: Tue 02 Sep 2014, 05:19
by B.K. Johnson
This is weird! I have seen it happen twice.

Palemoon comes OOTB with tahrpup-5.8.3. I installed Seamonkey-2.26.0 via quickpet and subsequently updated to 2.26.1. Both were open applications along with Composer in which I was working.

On one occasion, I clicked on a Firefox-30 pet to install it and the other time I installed Firefox via quickpet. Immediately following the petget messages in each case, the Composer page I am writing in suddenly closed and when I looked into the menu, Palemoon and Firefox were there under Internet, but Seamonkey was deleted. Seamonkey-2.26.0 remains listed as an installed app in PPM and so is the newly installed Firefox.

After rebooting, neither Firefox nor Seamonkey is in the menu, nor is there desktop files for either in /usr/share/applications. Seamonkey-2.26.0 is still listed in the PPM but no Firefox. whereis reports seamonkey at: /usr/bin/seamonkey; Firefox is at /usr/lib/mozilla.

It is not a pupsave issue: space available=382MB..

The first time, I was using tahr-5.8.3 k3.14.11; the second k3.15.4. It's not kernel specific either.

Any ideas guys? Can someone try to replicate?

B.K. Johnson
