Changed the 214R.sfs code for 214X.sfs.
nox parameter works :D, thank you! :)

Since the naming of zdrv_214R.sfs was changed in initrd.gz_/sbin/init I tried to boot with the zdrv_.sfs renamed to zdrv_214X.sfs: no go :?. zdrv_ could not be found and loaded :(.

Been hunting down the places in pup_214X.sfs where an R should be changed to an X (and a few instances where there should have been an R, but wasn't).

Now it works for me with pup_214X.sfs and zdrv_214X.sfs.

To fix it, unsquash pup_214R.sfs, run the following script once in the top directory of the unsquashed .sfs, mksquashfs the pup_214X.sfs again, and voilà! :)

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
RX=`echo "./etc/rc.d/functions4puppy
./root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/MIME-types/application_x-pet
./sbin/zdrvfind
./usr/sbin/bootmanager
./usr/sbin/chooselocale
./usr/sbin/petget
./usr/sbin/pupget
./usr/sbin/puppyinstaller
./usr/sbin/pupremaster.sh"`

for ONE in $RX

Great work MHHP,

I was worried about Dougal´s pupremaster and puppyinstaller. Then I was planning to look at them tomorrow, but never noticed about the other scripts (you save me a lot of time man :) ).

This solution is brilliant. Thank you and +10 for the effort.

OK, here goes. Just copied the relevant lines from 301 :).

On a sidenote,
isolinux.cfg passes on boot-parameters, for instance, I added a PKEYS statement at the end of the append-line:

Code: Select all

append root=/dev/ram0 initrd=initrd.gz loglevel=3 PMEDIA=idecd PKEYS=se
and now the CD boots with my keyboard layout already chosen. Someone (Aitch?) wondered about this many pages back.

Cheers :)/

Thanks MHHP, now 214X seems to have less things left to be fixed/added. Is there any real bug left?

In my spare time I updated the rc.shutdown script to add customization for pup_save name in first shutdown, now you can save it with a extended name like pup_save-214X16-test1 or pup_save-clarf.

I wanted this feature to make tests easier over new 214X releases. :)

I hope you like it and could be added to the next (RC) version...

Yes guys I think I'll give it one more week for more post and make a RC1 release ;). We've done a great job of refining this release, I think its the most refined puppy ever. Also started working on Upup Karmic located at http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 318#359318 feel free to give it a test run :)

Hello :)!

By the way, adding pfix=noramsfs sc**ws the symlink /mnt/home -> /initrd/mnt/dev_save up, making home to appear unmountable (for a pup_saved frugal), even for subsequent boots, where pfix=noramsfs is not issued.
Don't normally run with this boot-param., sort of stumbled upon this, got curious, can probably not help myself from delving into this shortly .

Please excuse if this is somewhere in the thread. I didn't want to read thru +2000 posts to check. Laptop, no cd drive, 192 megs ram, 700mhz. No matter what I do I cannot install this on the hd. I get a lot of "init is parent". Is there an extra file to add to the / dir, or is there something I should be adding to menu.1st?

I've heard that the 2.14 series only takes 16 megs of ram so I thought this to be ideal for this computer. I have a 4.12 installed frugal on sda3 of same hd.

"init is the parent of ..."

Even though I have a short but, intense memory, I do seem to recall that this would be resolved by adding

Code: Select all

root=/dev/ram0
to the kernel line of GRUB.

To select a subdir and/or a specified pup_save-file, you may get some inspiration from this boot stanza, for a subdir-frugal in hda6 :):

Code: Select all

title Puppy 214X16 on hda6/puppy_214X16
rootnoverify (hd0,5)
kernel /puppy_214X16/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PMEDIA=idehd PDEV1=hda6 PUPMODE=12 DEV1FS=ext2 SFSFILE=ext2,hda6,/puppy_214X16/pup_214X.sfs ZDRV=ext2,hda6,/puppy_214X16/zdrv_214X.sfs PUPSAVE=ext2,hda6,/puppy_214X16/pup_save-214X16.2fs PKEYS=se
initrd /puppy_214X16/initrd.gz
Not all of it is needed, though .

a user pm me and asked for novel network support, so I compiled the latest version of ncpfs and added the novel puppy login gui from http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... c805b56eb4 and made a pet, It won't be in 2.14X due to the overall size and limited users of this program, but a pet is easy enough to install. And you'll find a link in menu/Network/Novel login
anyways hope it works.

Hi Nancy

I've never booted that way, so I'm in the dark, but I would think you would have to change your Bios settings, to have it use pcmcia as the first boot device. Do that and then save then settings and try it and see what happens.

Maybe I was not yet clear enough for I am not booting from usb (just pointed to the inbuilt possibility in Teenpup). I only use the pcmcia for reading and writing to usb drives ....?

Browser cache 5000? Holey Moley!!! 5 gigabytes?

Cache is usually set to 4->50 mb.

Can be changed in edit>preference>advanced.
Not sure you are correct about the 5 gigabytes meaning.

I just checked my Puppy 4.3.1 machine and it has

browser.cache.disk.capacity 4096

and edit>preferences>advanced indicates that that is 4 MB not 4 GB

I seem to remember, when using 214R with my IBM lappy, I had to modprobe pcmcia_yenta, or _cs, or _cardbus [or whatever code it was - long time ago  *] before modprobe ehci, uhci, in order to get usb in an adapter, in pcmcia slot to work
I think the reason was the pcmcia wasn't fully loaded before the usb tried to load?

* Don't forget also some lappy's don't have 32bit cardbus slots and will only work with 16bit adapters,
so check your pcmcia-to-usb adapter's compatibility

Hi Aitch,

Thank you for your concern but

usb (drives) slotted into pcmcia work in puppy 4 without any trick.

Besides I don't know anything about modprobing - I am an eternal newbie.

ttuuxxx,
you keep busy as always, KUpup, XO-OLPC, and now 4.60 :).

Please, don't let releasing 214XRC wait so long, so it gets abandoned  :). I know it's only a week since you mentioned RC:ing 214X :) (now).
No extreme hurry, though, just bumping 214X up :).
