Foxit workaround

edoc,

see this thread regarding foxit reader:

http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/viewtopic ... ight=foxit
I tried this link a few times but ended up at
Not Found

The requested URL /users/puppy/viewtopic.php was not found on this server.
Apache/2.0.50 (Fedora) Server at www.murga.org Port 80
I have the Foxit executable file extracted in a folder and it opens into a program window with a nice menu. When I try to menu open a pdf file, the whole thing collapses and presents a txt file of the pdf.

If the above, now seemingly bad link, has info related to this problem perhaps a working link can be posted.

I would like for Foxit to work because ePDFVIEW native to Puppy4 doesn't allow the copy function. I want to be able to copy from the pdf doc and paste into another application. I always use Foxit in Windows so I was happy to see that they have a Linux version but....

You can fix those old links by replacing murga.org/%7Epuppy with murga-linux.com/puppy
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

jackieflorida,

don't waste your time with Foxit reader. The executable seems to work for some people, & on a whim, not for others. But even when it works it doesn't have the copy/paste functionality you're after. I'm not sure whether newer versions of acroread, gv or xpdf have this or not?

An editing method in ePDFView

#26 Post by jackieflorida »

First "thanks" to all above responding to my post about copying in ePDFView. I emailed the author of this program, Jordi Fita, about copying and here is his reply:
No, it is not possible in version 0.1.6. However, in the upcoming 0.1.7
version a user kindly added this feature. I hope to release the new
version soon, so stay tuned! :-)
I tried Muggins suggested library file to enable FOXIT but like he said just above, it may not work and it didn't for me.
I looked into the Adobe suggestion by Wolf Pup above but decided not to get into the 46mb install at this time since I found a way to accomplish the editing that I needed still using ePDFView.

Specifically, what I needed to do with a 7 page pdf doc was to split it into two 3-page docs and one 1-page doc, with the same page ordering. In Windows I would have copied pages from the pdf into, say, a word processor and then split them. Well, in the absence of the copy function in ePDFView and about a day later I came up with the following for page separation. (I agree, this should have initially been obvious but the obvious was eclipsed by old Windows habits!)

So for those who may need this feature and who may not have seen the obvious for splitting out page selections here it is:

SPLITTING A PDF DOCUMENT INTO PAGES in ePDFView
1. Load pdf file into PDF Viewer 0.1.6.
2. Click File/Print to present printing options.
3. Select CUPS-PDF printer.
4. Click on the JOB tab.
5. Select Range
6. Type in desired page range, e.g. 4-6
7. Print to pdf file containing only the selected range.

Actually this is the most common type of pdf editing that I do and it is nice to know that I can do it in Puppy as I happily withdraw from WindowsXP.

Online PDF viewer/storage/sharing and faxing pdf for free

#27 Post by jackieflorida »

For viewing and storage and sharing pdf files online try this: http://viewer.zoho.com/

Since I gave up my phone landline and now have just my cell phone I found this site that I use with absolutely free and excellent service:
http://faxzero.com/

Actually, it is the faxzero service that prompted my original question. One can fax for free a pdf doc with up to three pages. If the doc is more than three pages, I split it to comply with the three page limit and send each split as a separate fax. There is an additional cover sheet containing a small advertisement that pays for the service but I don't find that bothersome, considering their excellent service.

They will service a fax for you of up to 15 pages for $2 paid via PayPal should you really need that perhaps for a more professional appearance. But for my work the free service is all I need.

Wolf Pup

Thank you for the adobe_acrobat_reader-8.1.2.pet file. Athough it's a large application, it works, which I can't say for Foxit and others that I've tried. Although, off topic, I've enjoyed using other pet files posted by you ie Firefox 3.00.

Thank you for sharing,
Jim

I just tried using it with seamonkey. It gives warnings that firefox is the preferred browser, that I haven't registered, and that the pdf file has to be either less than 2M, or 20 pages, but it then opened the following 53k .pdf:

Evince is good, I use it in my other Linux distro. I think it relies on Gnome libraries though so I wouldn't swear it works in Puppy.

I am looking for a pdf viiewer that works with passworded files. It seems that my bank now requires adobe reader 6 to open your e-statements. I guess I will just keep letting them know how disappointed I am. I spent several days testing their website for Linux Compatibility and gave them a Linux Friendly rating for that.

Have you tried "Adobe Pdf Viewer for Linux?"
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
I think puppy has a pet for it, hmmmm I'll look
its a older version of 5 series, but muppy has 8 series, so you might want to try muppy:)
I think if your going to use this all the time, series 3.0.1 is a better choice for a base, anyways have fun

Thanks ttuuxxx, I was able to install the 8.1.1.1.pup and it comes to life and works well with local documents but it has issues connecting ssl to the bank's server to verify username and password. I get an error message to install a certificate from terminal but that does not work.I will look into it when I have more time perhaps.

I put together adobe 8.13 pet package, Also use firefox 2.0+ with it
http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/ttuuxxx/ ... er-8.0.pet
45 MB pet

plus first delete /root/.adobe
I've read around and seems like this version ssl works.
It does show missing libGLU when installing but that ok, it isn't needed for what your doing.

Hope this works for you

Thanks again but still the same issue. I have forwarded it to the bank's technical staff to play with. Here was the important part of my request.
With the help of the Puppy Linux team I have managed to install Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.13 for Linux and can now enter the login information, however....

I receive the following error.
"SSL Error. The required certificate was not found."

I have run the requested command with no difference.
It says it is looking for the certificate es.netteller.com 443
Please see the attached a BMP screenshot of the error for Windows users.
It will be interesting to see what I get for an answer from them since according to their directions I now exceed the requirements.

You are running firefox 2.0+ right?
Also another route could be just using wine and the default windows adobe reader grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Yup, I am running Firefox/2.0.0.20, and I looked checked the settings and everything looks ok.

No wine on this machine thanks, I quit drinking that stuff a long time ago. It did come with xp and I updated that, added antivirus etc. and shrunk the partition, then created a new ext2 and installed 3.01 tmxxine and a lot of toys like K3b etc. I suppose it has been a couple months, I should boot to the other drive and update everything again when I have a couple hours to spare. Then I could install adobe on there and skip the wine but that seems like a lot of work for a bank statement I can read online.

Thanks again. I think for now I will use the email they send as a reminder to go look at my account ;)

If you wanted to try wine and adobe I think the orginal ChurchPup had wine and MS version of adobe reader. You might want to look at that.

Thanks--works great! (ePDFView had a bug that caused some pages of my sheet-music PDFs not to print correctly; they print correctly from Adobe 8.)
