Insidious Puppy 001
Frustration
I normally run Puppy on a bootable USB drive and use LiLi USB Creator
http://old.linuxliveusb.com/ With this puplet(distro) I can create a bootable USB drive....but when it boots it take forever trying to find the save file(which of course is not there on the firt boot) and then times out.
Using a LiveCD that I burned from the iso I have the following problems:
Sound....running the wizard results in;
error: modinfo could not find module snd
isapnp????
no such file detected no device found
Cups
No PDF printer installed
Add printer, detects my LaserJet1 1012 on usb port, will not print test page error /usb/lib/cups/Filter/psttopdf failed
Printer listed as idle with message that couldn;t read xreftable

Thanks for your great intro explaining insidious puppy!
While I'm downloading, two vital questions :
* What's the window manager?
* How long is your military duty?

Just loaded the updated Insidious Puppy 001 on two laptops.
On my Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 it worked perfectly!
On the CF-28 it failed the same as before, blank display.
Luci-239 brings up the xorgwizard command prompt but just loops & when I try Vesa it also brings me to a blank screen. There is the warning about deprecated the modconfig location and the first time something about mouseconfig being set to "5".

Hi all:
Insidious pup is proving to be fast, stable, and light on resources. Thanks for the effort and diligence.
just a minor thing here that might help with rendering .ps files:
info http://packages.debian.org/sid/libjbig2dec0
download http://packages.debian.org/sid/i386/lib ... 0/download
When I tried to open the /usr/share/examples/colorcir.ps, it wouldn't display in epdfviewer. xerrs.log revealed that libjbig2dec.so.0 was missing:
/usr/bin/gs: error while loading shared libraries: libjbig2dec.so.0:
After installing the above package, the colorcir.ps displayed fine.

That is what I see too but it goes away so fast that I recognized it now when you spelled it out.
But typical of me I fail to remember when I see it or at which puppy but it is rather often.
So maybe it is important.

While I'm working of frugal installs on the test boxes I'm giving Insidious Puppy 001 a quick run live pfix=ram on my main Linux box.
Initial boot had working sound and no problem getting my desired 1440x900x24 resolution..........no network interface was detected though. Was able to use the Network Wizard and load the correct module so working now.

Tested Insidious now several reboots. Looks and works just fine.
There is problem with ppm repo update and repo visibility. Fixed problem I am sure.
Cups works with printing wirelessly to my HP1020. Previous small bugs fixed. I had same problems with acpitool -s, but after tests i got it working combining earlier acpitool-s from dpup and installing shinobars latest acpid. I also copied /etc/acpi from fluppy and installed pwireless2 to get full laptop support. Now my machine connects to net after wake up automatically.
I like the good selection of apps and little stripped down outlook. The selected apps are all working, no useless stuff.
I installed pupradio and it works with vlc fine. Lxtask, gtkhash and file-roller were good picks.
To change clock outcome, install PupClockset pet.
I think this should be locked down version and next step would be adding stuff to Insidious repo and test Lucid apps usability in Insidious because lucid guys have so many packages already collected. And also compile more apps in Insidious. I think this sid based dpup has potential to be LTS version

I think I might upload a "001.1" real soon, to fix PPM and this CUPS issue.
I also had an idea in mind - the "Packages-debian-*" files in /root/.packages consume 7.9 MB uncompressed, they're simply huge! Maybe I can build the ISO without those and without the "Packages-puppy-*" files.

Did a manual frugal install edited menu.lst and rebooted.
The distro booted very fast without a problem, initial screens worked ok but i noticed that the text was displayed in a higher resolution than i chose?, when desktop appeared it was the resolution i chose.
So far this is distro is looking to be a very stable and useable, will do a full install later and try to compile a few apps.
Good Work Iguleder, and i hope your army tour will not be to stressful.

tacao, there's a very nice pet made by radky, that lets you choose the time and date format.taca0 wrote:I

See this thread.
If you want to do it manually, the "set 1" ( %l:%M %p ) in radky's post is the right parameter for 12h.am/pm.
It has to be pasted in /root/.jwmtray on the minixcal line near the end of the file. Replace "%H:%M" with it.

No....and Quirkyy1.4 has the same problem.Iguleder wrote:This needs investigation. Is it a slow USB 1.1 device?tlchost wrote:but when it boots it take forever trying to find the save file(which of course is not there on the firt boot) and then times out.
So what good is a faster boot if it can not detect/use the onboard audio? It's compiled into the kernel to make it boot faster.tlchost wrote:error: modinfo could not find module snd

So if the distro won't detect the onboard sound chip...what do you suggest?
If the sound problem didn;t exist, I'd be happy to test print to file.Yes, use "print to file" instead.tlchost wrote:Cups

I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the "snd" module. Maybe it's just a driver that both 2.6.31.14 and 2.6.32.26 lack.tclhost wrote:So what good is a faster boot if it can not detect/use the onboard audio?
Just check what driver you need from a Puppy that does have sound working. That's the first step - identify the driver.

Was able to boot this, make the configuration choices, get to the desktop.
I'd previously copied the SFS file to an ext3 partition filling a 1GB Flash Drive.
It looked good.
Rebooted, and as it shut-down, made a 512MB pupsave file beside the SFS file.
At reboot the pupsave wasn't seen.
After a couple of tries to produce a fix, I gave up and deleted everything.
I already have Dpup-010 working, but wanted to see if Inpu is better or not.

Terrible! The army should provide you with a nice little cabin on the beach, with a shady tree, a coffee machine, and a laptop. Someone should explain to them that Iguleder coding for Puppy and Debian would contribute more to national security than you having to carry guns.Iguleder wrote:Bert wrote:

( You could even add a sign to the cabin's door "Cave canem", Latin for "Watch out, insidious dog inside )
