thanks for the tips but neither got X to work. the past one did keep it in text mode but X never appeared. was able to cnrlC and crtl alt delete and shell responded as it should shutdown dialog worked fine.
Wonder if EFI booting could be keeping xwindows from going no BIOS drivers for video preloaded.

I had a similar problem in the past after updating a rolling release ISO.

sudo mhwd-gpu --setgl catalyst

Sounds like Graphics driver configuration issue or not installed correctly.

I had never thought to ask this because I had always (for the most part) run from DVD where this question does not apply:
  • Is there a tool for frugal users that tells the the amount of space is being using INSIDE of the "PUPSAVE" (save-session) file?
  • Is this available?
  • Is this doable?
  • Is there any benefit to the system letting the user know how much space of the total is beeing used?
Thoughts anyone

Works :) . Also we need is some translations and it can go into woof-CE (32 also). (vicmz? rodin.s?)
I already put it in woof and it works well. I today released slacko-5.6.5.6 (32 bit beta) with the new welcome1stboot binary.

Thanks.
Do you plan to
- install all available translations of welcome1stboot so that they can be used immediately from the beginning
or
- offer to install a langpack as first action at first boot
?

Attached file contains german translation in the momanager way.
For other translations save this to /usr/share/doc/nls/welcome1stboot/welcome1stboot.pot

Hi 01micko

Just to let you know that i did a full install to a 16gb mini usb and all seems good. Used the f2fs installer.

However a small moment of panic when the terminal went from yellow background with red text (good - easy to read) then stayed with yellow background but text changed to white
(bad - couldn’t read it).
Act of faith - pressed enter and prayed - all was good.

Then I succeeded with a multi-boot frugal install of Xprecise 5.7.1 retro on the same usb f2fs drive.
Used the f2fs installer in slacko64 again - very intuitive.

This whole puppy is very nicely done - many thanks.

Very best regards - Ray

Yes, discovered that! A legacy of me changing ~/.Xdefaults.

I have now changed the script so it uses the default urxvt configuration. Thanks!

Glad it worked.

Slacko64 5.8.8
Live CD first boot.
New Netgear WNA3100 USB wireless adapter
Broadcom BCM43231

Network Wizard

Wireless not recognized.

Tried to setup using ndiswrapper using Windows driver.
Normally works in other Puppies.

After identifying the Windows .inf file to use.
Ndiswrapper setup does nothing.

Edit:
If I try Simple network Setup.
Trying to use Windows driver, I get this message.

error windows driver does not seem to work. It has been uninstalled.

I tried a windows driver from Windows 7 64 version and a Windows XP driver.
Same results with all.

Edit:
In Rox the Windows driver .inf file is identified as an application/x-executable

Could this be the cause of problem?

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

System LOCKUP occurs, again

#132 Post by gcmartin »

System Lockup
Slacko64 running fine for about a day. Changed passwords for both system and SAMBA. SAMBA running and most activity is via Internet. No other major subsystem added/running.

I hit Ctrl-Alt-F2 and system LOCKED! NO WAY OUT to recover or to regain control??? Similar to what happen in prior post.

Suggestions to follow to assist PD. Or, any ideas.

Edit: Pulled the LAN cable. No reboot attempted. Called away. Back at system 5 minutes later, and mouse has returned to screen. Ctrl-Alt-F2 now allows me to get to Console.

System behavior is returned. On Ctrl-Alt-F1 messages of LAN cable errors associated with CIF connections to NASs, but, no other indicators of lockup problem.

Thoughts/PD instructions from anyone to shed light on the LOCKUP problem.

Slacko64 desktop starts causes KVM to switch to next system

#133 Post by gcmartin »

Completely separate issue (but not one which affect system behavior)

Scenario
I have 2 64bit PCs on a 2-port KVM switch. This KVM switch does NOT publicize a keyboard sequence to switch from one PC to the other, rather, it is done directly via the KVM switchbox. My 4-port KVM switches all have a keyboard sequence which can be used to bounce from the current system to the next. But, same sequences do NOT work with 2-port KVMs (designed as inexpensive units).

But, there is something in Slacko64 when Slacko64 desktop is started/restarted, it will cause the KVM switch to automatically switch from Slacko64 to the other system on the switch.

Questions
  • Anyone know why?
  • Anyone know if there is a keyboard sequence which will accomplish the same thing?
  • Would this behavior, which does NOT cause any apparent problem in either running system, be considered a "feature"?
  • If I wanted to trap this so that it can be adapted to a keyboard sequence, what is recommended?
Thanks in advance for any/all help, guidance, or understanding.

Hi 01micko

A small note regarding suspend / resume and slacko64.

When an f2fs is unmounted - it seems ok.

When an f2fs drive is mounted - it don’t work.

Interestingly, Xprecise 5.7.1 frugally installed to the same f2fs usb with a savefile in use (therefore mounted) does work.

Maybe to do with the files in startup ?

Will play some more, anyway - still a luvly puppy.

Best regards - Ray

This is a catch all. Low RAM systems will crash if suspended from usb. That said, a test can be in place to see if there is , say, over 1GB RAM free and allow suspend on a usb install. 1GB is arbitrary, will really need to see what is safe. Don't want any data loss if it can be helped.

Very interesting:-

did a frugal install to the same f2fs usb stick and slacko64 is noticeably faster, seems much snappier all round.

Firefox in particular is infinitely more responsive in all aspects.

Suspend / resume now works too.

So it would appear that in this instance, contrary to normal expectations, that a frugal install is superior to a full install.

Have not yet made a savefile - no need for now.

Hi Ray MK

Slacko, unlike Quirky-6+ is not optimised for full install, especially on f2fs. However, much depends on the speed of your BUS, the stick itself and probably the kernel. I have actually had quite varying results, mostly due to the media I think (spec).

It may interest you that you can easily remedy your lack of suspend.

In the file /etc/acpi/actions/suspend.sh comment lines 18 - 23.

Code: Select all

# do not suspend if usb media mounted
#USBS=$(probedisk2|grep '|usb' | cut -d'|' -f1)
#for USB in $USBS
#do
     #mount | grep -q "^$USB" && exit
#done
Works ok here.

This will be adjusted with perhaps said RAM test and a much better test if the install is usb. As it is, even if a usb drive is plugged suspend will likely fail.

Thanks for making me look at this.

Gave it another try today, still I have issues with static IPs. The network wizard still gives me the error of invalid addresses, no matter what I type in the respective fields. Frisbee gets me connected, but does not so automatically at every boot, I need to manually 'restart networks' from within frisbee. But apart from that, it's great.

I installed KDE from the slackware Repos. And Digikam. KDE progs run, but are slooooow. So is firefox (OK, might be my install, I use the same as in Fatdog, symlinked from the harddisk). Other stuff is responsive, feels about the same as fatdog. German language pack is a great PLUS! ;)

Closing the lid enters suspend, but opening the lid again gives a somewhat weird behavior, disks spin up, screen flickers, then it's back in suspend. Pushing the power button then wakes up the machine. It's a Lenovo ThinkPad R500, but now as I type, I remeber that on my other ThinkPad, a T61, with Slacko 5.6, it is the same, going into suspend nicely, and wakeing up with some problems.

My install is to a 16g flash drive, which I did w/ PUI and save-to-partition. So far, I've only used it on a desktop since my laptops are 32-bit. I guess that's a full install on the flash drive. Waiting for a more final version to install to a hard drive. BTW Slacko 5.6 is running very well in hard drive installs on both my dual core machines.
Dell optiplex 780, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93GHz, 4g RAM, w/ATI RV620 LE Radeon HD 3450. Currently running a full install of Slacko 6.3.0 ( 32 bit version).
