This works thanks to mdview's "magic". First mdview reconstructs a whole paragraph from markdown text, then it matches the paragraph against the message catalog. This means that the translation will still work even if the source paragraph is reformatted to a different line length - as long as the paragraph doesn't get split into two or more paragraphs.
