Maybe libparted and gparted cannot work with GPT partitioned drives.
a. wdt is helping me try to straighten things out with the drives.
All kinds of things to try.
See this reply by me to his suggestion that I run gdisk on the Flash Drive sdb.

b. I'll look for a more up-to-date Puppy amongst the seven I have, or ASAP make a "GParted Live USB".
Need to buy yet another Flash Drive; anyone know what's the best size to suit "GParted Live USB"?
I have a 32GB Flash Drive spare, but that seems to me to be too big for the purpose.

SUCCESS! :D

1. Typing this from Werewolf64, booted from the once problematic 8GB Flash Drive.

2. See this post detailing how I used gdisk to repair the corrupted backup GPT table [all beyond my understanding].
Should the Flash Drive even be using a GPT table?
Right now, bigpup says no it shouldn't.
So how come one exists on the Flash Drive?
Was it on it when I bought it perhaps?

3.
a. OK, how should I save session changes?
b. Will there be a save folder rather than a pupsave file?
c. How to make the save folder?
d. How to get a "Save..." icon on the desktop?
e. How to arrange to be asked at shutdown/reboot whether I want "to save or not to save"?
f. Is there a "Help" page that explains such stuff? [If there is I cannot find it]

In 2016, I am thinking of purchasing a new laptop. With solid-state drive and
touch screen. The latter is another thing that may become pretty much
standard.
If you have the time, how about upgrading the kernel in Squeezed Arm
Puppy alpha 4 . There still isn't a good operating system for raspberry pi B 2
despite its success. I wrote a time utility

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 586#876586

uextract pet works well with it. Add in samba and it could be a winner.

1. Oops, apparently I'm running a Werewolf64 full installation from my 8GB Flash Drive.
I NEVER normally run a full install.
Any advantages to a Werewolf64 full install?
Is it possible to have a Frugal or "Live" install on a Flash Drive?
I like a pupsave file, but it would be interesting to try a save folder.

2. I'm looking for info on the above kind of things, but so far not finding any.
OK...
With more time to search, I found and read carefully...
THIS PAGE
And...
Quirky Installer, initrd changes
DUH!
Which gives the kind of info in which I'm interested.
e.g. Frugal install to a Flash Drive.

3.
a. This full install boots/loads VERY FAST, but SeaMonkey loads SLOW.
b. Installed gdisk-1.0.0-3, and it runs OK. :D

Hi Barry,

I did some experiments, so I don't use udev anymore, I use busybox mdev.

See this : https://www.mail-archive.com/busybox%40 ... 21981.html

Yes busybox mdev does the job better and faster and easier than udev.

Cheers

I have very pleasant experience with Quirky Werewolf 64 bit.
I bought very cheap HP 250 g4 laptop. My main laptop has showed aging and I dont dare to take with me to trips anymore. I first tested tahrpup 32 bit. No go with touchpad, just couldnt get it configured right. Slacko newest 64 bit didnt even recognize intel graphics.
Quirky Werewolf just worked. Everything okay, hdmi, audio, touchpad, graphics.
I compiled Vattery + vattery-acpitool to get proper suspend when battery is low and then I compiled wl driver with appropriate patches and wireless is fine now. Then I added needed /etc/acpi/scripts to get some acpi functions to work like suspend when lid closed and here it is. Perfectly working linux laptop.
Thank you Barry of great work. And Happy Christmas. There is even snow in Finland atm.

Wow, is this something you can teach to a simple user. This function is pretty important for those of us who only use laptops.

I think you can see it by deleting folder /root/.mozilla/ and starting seamonkey.

There is also a problem with xine : when opening a video, it takes time and is slow, missing video frames.

1. Working within Werewolf64 booted from 8GB TDK Flash Drive.

2. Attempted to:
a. Use installquirky command [after similar failed attempt with "Quirky Universal Installer" in Menu], to complete "Frugal installation" to my new 8GB "SanDisk Cruzer Edge" Flash Drive [all space unallocated].
b. 1st window works OK, I choose "Drive->Frugal installation->INSTALL".
c. 2nd window appears, I read it and click "CONTINUE"].
d. 3rd window appears, I choose sdc...SanDisk Cruzer, and click CONTINUE.
e. NOTHING HAPPENS! No other windows appear...urxvt console window sits there doing nothing, so I eventually close it. :(

3. What now?

4. By-the-way, sdc1 is displayed on the desktop.
Most unusual, since it is totally unallocated space.
i.e. GParted has it listed as sdc, and shows it with no partitions on it, and ALL unallocated space.
So how can it display as sdc1?

I'm in Xmas-mode right now, not very responsive to bug reports!

But, regarding the above, run this in a terminal, see what it reports about sdc:

# probepart
# cat /proc/partitions | grep sdc
# ls -1 /sys/block/sdc | grep '^sdc'

UDF is a format that unix uses. Is it possible that this drive was used
by Mac OS X computer?

I believe NOT.
I bought this NEW Flash Drive a few days back...installed a couple of things on it [e.g. "GParted Live"] using Puppy, then erased the partitions [completed using "GParted Live"] to make it ALL unallocated space.
Didn't zero-fill it though.

For the record...

I've been using Werewolf installed on USB SD card reader.

I find that I must first wipe card clean by formatting it with
SD card formatter for windows.
It only takes a few seconds because it is a quick formatting.
Then I have no problems.

Yes, BUT...
a. Do you think any of that applies to my situation?
I assume I cannot use SD card formatter for windows to format [partitions on] my Flash Drive.
And anyway, I have no need methinks, to make any partitions prior to using the Werewolf64 "Universal Installer".
OR...

b. Does this do a low-level format?

Quirky Werewolf 64-bit 7.4

- missing libraries in /usr/bin/
liblavjpeg-2.1.so.0 => not found
liblavfile-2.1.so.0 => not found
liblavplay-2.1.so.0 => not found
libgee-0.8.so.2 => not found

- /boot/syslinux/ and /boot/iso/ are not needed (since you need to install a bootloader and those 2 don't work out of the box).

- gettext could be in devx.

- directfb is obsolete , could be removed.

(- I dont like the way ubuntu compiles programs with so many dependencies.)

Encryption

#220 Post by rek769 »

Greetings all,

After a foray into Arch Linux to take advantage of 64-bit architecture and the rolling release model (which means, among other things, that the kernel can be kept up to date easily) I was happy to see Barry's Quirky based on Werewolf. I get a more recent kernel than is available with Tahr (which I do still like...alot), I get 64-bit architecture, and NO systemd (a drawback to using Arch IMHO).

After doing a full install of "Quirky Wolf" on my 8Gb stick and running it successfully for the past couple of weeks I have come to miss the savefile encryption that was available under the traditional Puppy architecture.

Is there anyway to have that type of encryption when booting into Quirky Wolf so that if someone were to get a hold of my flash drive they would not be able to boot into my system without a password?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions, thoughts, and recommendations.
