Do you know what user agent you are using in mint?

Semme, I see from the address that you are using in.yahoo.com. I went there and everything is fine using a linux agent.

If you set the browser to go to www.yahoo.com it should be like what I posted.

Hi All
Same problem here. Running Slacko 5.7.0 and SeaMonkey.
If I go to one of the Yahoo E-Mail reflectors web pages that I belong to all looks
normal. Only when I go to Yahoo.com does it look wrong.

Best Regards
John

I dont even know what a user agent is . I tried downloading a user agent switcher but had no success with it.

If you are using Firefox, Go to Help/Troubleshooting Information and look for "User Agent" it should be the 4th line down in "Application Basics".

Even though I'm running Slacko 5.6 and Firefox 24.8.0esr, mine has to be:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:29.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/29.0

in order for www.yahoo.com to display correctly.

What does yours say when you are using Mint?

This is what I get with Puppy. Will have to check on Mint.

Thanks J_D_ !

that is what I was looking for.

Looking at the two strings, The major difference between the two was that Firefox is reporting a version 17 user agent with puppy. (mint is using 31).

Now that I know that, I manually edited my user-agent to find which version yahoo would allow to display a normal page.

It turns out yahoo will display correctly with versions 30.0 or higher. 29.0 and lower failed when the user-agent is linux. Windows 29.0 user agent still worked fine.

I'm sure micro$oft has *nothing* to do with it ! </sarc>

So when I edited my user-agent to say:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:30.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/30.0

or

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/31.0

yahoo started displaying correctly.

So you have two possible solutions. Upgrade Firefox to 30.0 or higher, or edit the user-agent string. I choose to edit my string as it is pretty easy.

Here is a link that explains how to edit the string:

Use one of the 2 listed above, refresh yahoo and it will work correctly again.

Thank you OD. I actually went to the Mozilla site yesterday and tried to update to FF 30 but it said to not directly download to Linux. I will follow your instructions later today. Thanks.

I get normal view of Yahoo using Firefox V32 and not using user agent.

I just update firefox by going to help->About Firefox->check for updates.

If you are using Slacko 5.7 and the installed Firefox ESR version. It's internal update does not work.
You have to update it using the Slacko Update Manager.
menu->setup->Update manager

Better to replace Firefox ESR with a consumer version from the Slacko PPM.
That way you can use Firefox internal update.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

I'm using FF23 thats in the slack57-ff23 distro.
I generally don't go to yahoo for anything other than groups and mail.
I will say that sports, finance, and news are HEAVILY coded/styled/MM pages.
My DSL cnxn is slow which probably masks the FF problem. Theres a lot of junk in those pages.
