The nVidea driverPETinstallation issue is SOLVED
The nVidea driver issue is SOLVED via a series of steps on the X2 desktop PC.
As it turns out, 3 reboots of the Linux Live media system was required to. both, circumvent the error message and get a successful driver installation.
I will open a thread for future LH64 reference that addresses just this single issue by consolidating the symptoms with a resolution which worked..

LH64 Broadcom connection issue ... SOLVED!
@TaZoC, thanks!!!!!!!
TRIED YOUR RECOMMENDATION:
Thanks you for your guidance on this.

TRIED YOUR RECOMMENDATION:
- Booted the system. selecting the Boot Manager item "... without a savefile"
- Once on desktop, Fill-in the FirstRUN with appropriate information then hitting OK
- Allowed the system to restart the desktop when asked
- On desktop, I opened the Service Manager and selected the wireless driver as follows:
- Menu -> Setup -> Fatdog64 Service Manager where on the left pane I double clicked "wl" and on the right pane clicking BOTH Enable and Start buttons.
- Exited the Service Manager to desktop,
- Back on desktop, I opened the Network taskbar element and selected Frisbee button.
- ON Frisbee, I was REQUIRED to click the "Wireless Network Reset" button to see the available networks.
Thanks you for your guidance on this.

Sorry for the confusion I hadn't found the Fatdog64 Service Manager which I am familiar with from fatdog.
I'm connected using frisbee and delighted with the result although it looks like I may have a sound problem to sort later.
Some earlier puppies didn't have the wl driver installed as standard and the multipet was developed by some kind forum members (thanks peebee) to get users with the wl driver connected.
Thanks for setting me right.

Re: Grub4DosConfigConfig
Are you recommending that I actually create a USB boot stick or to just create the UEFI Flash Drive button which serves a Menu purpose without a USB boot stick?tazoc wrote:Hi edoc, edoc wrote:Is "GPT hard drive installation" similar to Frugal?

Yes and yes. I suspect your hard disk has GPT even though you've installed Windows 7. If so, a button in the new Universal Installer will open something like this in /usr/share/doc/faqs:
http://www.lhpup.org/help/faqs/uefi-harddrive.html
But I highly recommend using the 'Make UEFI Flash drive' button first. That is much easier and should work on any 64-bit computer that can boot from USB flash. (By pressing and holding a specific key like <Esc> or <F8> when the PC first starts to, bring up the 'BBS' BIOS Boot Selection menu.)

Creating a LH64 bootable USB stick
The former, yes get a USB stick that is at least 1 Gig capacity and if it has files on it you need, then copy them elsewhere first. The first button in LH Universal Installer will step you through preparing the stick. No need to format it first. Just note that any contents of the stick will be erased by the installer. It needs to be plugged in to a USB port and not mounted. If not, the installer will let you know.edoc wrote:Are you recommending that I actually create a USB boot stick or to just create the UEFI Flash Drive button which serves a Menu purpose without a USB boot stick?
How does this work?
First it will ask you to navigate to the location of your Lighthouse64-6.02-B2.iso. Either the base or Mariner ISO will work. Then it will 'dd' the ISOhybrid image to the stick, making it bootable. Next the dialog will display a specific command to copy and paste into a terminal that adds another partition to the stick--to use the remaining space for storage. This step will ask which file system you desire to use. I chose Linux ext4, (press 'L' for Linux) but it will offer others also, such as Fat32 or NTFS.
Finally it will help you format the partition with the chosen file system. If this step gives an error message, type sfdisk -R /dev/xxx, where xxx is your USB flash drive, (e.g., sdb, sdc etc.) repeat the format and you're done. (sfdisk -R just asks the kernel to re-read the partition table. The script will give you that command as well, so no need to make note of it.)
Thanks to Jamesbond for writing the script and directions, without which this would have been very difficult!

I moved my Lighthouse64 install once again, this time to a hp desktop

I booted with the option that doesn't load x and uninstalled the

I have an iso-burned DVD in the drive but it does not show up as Lighthouse64*.iso but rather as a bunch of files and folders none of which contain that.

@Edoc, I thnik TaZoC wants you to use the ISO file, itself, rather than the DVD. If you have the ISO file on your HDD, just point the utility to that location and it will extract the files its looking for.
Hope this helps in understanding.

Just time for a quick report, all working well but it was necessary to add nouveau.noaccel=1 to the kernel line with my onboard Nvidia graphics. If not, computer freezes with a garbled display.
This problem reared it's ugly head somewhere about k-3.5 and later.
Otherwise looking good so far in brief testing.

Booted OK when I used the selection to bypass the problematic Radeon driver.

Just rebooted and told it to create the savefile on sda4
QUESTION: Will I always have to boot with the USB stick or will I at some point be able to boot in Frugal without the USB stick?
INSTALL NOTE: When one clicks on the Desktop Setup icon that menu shows a generic Puppy Universal Installer but when clicking on the Star icon in the bottom left corner then going to Setup the same app if labeled Lighthouse Universal Installer.
SETUP NOTE: It is unclear what to choose in order to browse compatible apps for LH64-602b2

Re: Pidgin Logs
Yes, by default in LH64 and FD64, pidgin runs as user 'spot', and spot cannot write to files not owned by spot. This is to prevent web-connected apps from messing with your important files. So make .purple owned by spot, (root can still write to files owned by spot.) Open a terminal in /mnt/home/ or (where ever your .purple resides,) and type:tlchost wrote:I normally move .purple out of /root to /mnt/home and use a symlink to keep it out of the save file anmd share it between various puppies.
LHP has it in /root/spot and moving it to /mnt/home and using a symlink will not allow log files to be written.
Is there a work around?
Thanks
Code: Select all
chown -R spot .purple
Open /usr/local/bin/defaultchat with a text editor and change pidgin.sh to pidgin
Same goes for /usr/share/applications/pidgin.desktop, in the line that begins with Exec=

Frugal without the USB stick
Good job! If the installer shows a 'UEFI hard drive' (frugal install guide) button to the right, (on a machine with a GPT hard drive) you can try that. Let us know if you have any questions. The install guide (based on FD64's) is also here:edoc wrote:OK, USB stick iso and partition complete.
Booted OK when I used the selection to bypass the problematic Radeon driver.
wlan0 connected fine.
Just rebooted and told it to create the savefile on sda4
QUESTION: Will I always have to boot with the USB stick or will I at some point be able to boot in Frugal without the USB stick?

It only works on a machine with UEFI firmware, typically with Windows 7/8. If you don't have the 'UEFI hard drive' button in the Universal Installer, let us know.
Yes, both launch the script /usr/sbin/puppyinstaller, modified for LH64.INSTALL NOTE: When one clicks on the Desktop Setup icon that menu shows a generic Puppy Universal Installer but when clicking on the Star icon in the bottom left corner then going to Setup the same app if labeled Lighthouse Universal Installer.
Click the 'Install' icon on the desktop. That will direct you to compatible software; package names should contain 64, x86_64, AMD64 or 'noarch'. Lighthouse Update and PPM will only show those. Does that help?SETUP NOTE: It is unclear what to choose in order to browse compatible apps for LH64-602b2
