Finally 525 gets a bug thread! That's nice. Now we have two...

Fix your ugly menu problem here (bug present since 5.0):
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=66569

Next problem, I tried upgrading my USB flash drive (which was at 511) and it broke it - good thing I backed up first!

511 uses extlinux.sys and extlinux.conf. 525 apparently uses ldlinux.sys and it should have syslinux.conf according to the syslinux wiki, but instead there is still extlinux.conf.

The symptoms, in one computer I got the syslinux line printed on the screen and then it would hang. On the laptop it got farther but could not find lupu_525.sfs even though it was there. If I booted with the CD, it worked, even though it used lupu_525.sfs from the flash drive.

I should have tried renaming extlinux.conf to syslinux.conf, to see if that could fix it, but I didn't think of that before I had restored my 511 backup, sorry.

When I ran the Universal Installer, I told it to leave the MBR on the flash drive alone. I don't know if that was a good call - not sure how it figures out to run syslinux or ldlinux or extlinux...

How am I running 525? Booting from CD with pupsave on the flash drive (there is no hard drive), or booting from the flash drive (which was broken).
Computer specs? Sony Vaio C140-G, and Intel D510MO with 2GB ram.

How did you upgrade?
Be specific what you did.

Live Bootable LiveCD/LiveDVD media no longer boots if saved

#4 Post by gcmartin »

Several members have already tried to duplicate this on their system. I have this phenomenon on 3 different systems, Here's some more information for this community to look at as we try to ID this problem>
gcmartin wrote: Restating the Live media booting problem:
  • Booted 01Micko's LiveCD SPUP099 on laptop.
  • Remove SPUP LiveCD from drive and replace with a new CDRW
  • Downloaded, checksum, and Pburn Puppy5.25 ISO to CDRW on a laptop with DVD-RW burner.
  • Also,LiveCD will boot on all machines before save to CD on reboot occurs from any one of these PC/laptop which can write CDs.
  • Laptop booted after ISO burned to multi-session CD/DVD.
  • But, after session is saved to CD/DVD when rebooting,
  • PC does NOT recognize the media in the reader as bootable.
PC pauses, makes a brief attempt, then goes to next bootable device in the POST list.
Here's what the SPUP reports on LiveCD files copied from ISO

After PUP5.25 LiveCD is booted, tailored, and "Saved to CD" on rebooting, LiveCD with SAVED session no longer boots on this/any 32bit Intel/AMD PC.

Rebooting 01Micko's LiveCD SPUP, this is what I see when i use this to look at the LIveCD with the problem>

Is this additional information helpful for diagnosing why the system is having problems with burning.

Any helpful ideas for additional problem information capture, or for resolution, would be appreciated.

Is there somewhere I can create/send this "Live" for analysis in the PUP community. Additional eyes could be helpful.
Also posted this problem last here and first here on this problem. Is this enough information to get to the bottom of this problem?
Thanks in advance.

I just did a fresh Live CD of Lucid Puppy 5.25 to a multi-session CD. Added some programs and saved to the CD.
Rebooted the CD and all works for me.
I am using it to write this.

Things that could be your problem.
Not enough memory to handle added data before saving.
Something wrong with burner drive you are using.
Bad copy of Pburn. Not making multi-session CD/DVD that works proper.
I used Pburn that comes with Lucid 5.25. Pburn V3.3.4
Burner drive does not work well with the type of CD/DVD's you are using.
+R or -R or +RW or -RW type thing.
Speed you burned the CD/DVD too fast.

Your multi-session Live cd should have these files and directory after you do the first save to it.

SAMBA installation on PUP525

#6 Post by gcmartin »

On SAMBA installation I find it working properly in operation. I am knowledgeable enough with lots of past experiences to navigate my system so that I can test and deploy its services.

When it installs, it mentions that it has updated the Menu.
BUT, when I look in Menu > Network, where its entry is suppose to be, its not there.

Is the PPM Installer defeating this?

Its suppose to allow the start/stop/restart of the SAMBA service.

Hope this helps.

Live Bootable LiveCD/LiveDVD media no longer boots if saved2

Thanks BigPUP.
bigpup wrote: ... Your multi-session Live cd should have these files and directory after you do the first save to it.
Thanks for sharing your test with me. Below is MY CD. its the same as I had posted earlier via the "du" terminal command.. Also, it matches the contents of your CD. Further, ALL 32bit systems that this occurs on, have over 1GB of RAM.

The Live media boots and runs no matter which pfix= parm I use to run from RAM or run from CD. The problem does NOT appear to be a problem with the system writing the contents of the save-session because I can see the save session, here, and in the earlier "du", reported.

It appears that somehow "Save to CD" is destroying the ability to boot again. 2 obvious questions that I'm sure everyone is asking is>
  1. What in PUP525 could be doing that?
  2. Is there a boot record that PUP is inadvertently destroying?
Remember that this boots over and over until a session save to CD is performed.

Any other eyes or ideas.

Tried to make multisession cd using "burn iso to cd" on cd-rw.
On 2nd reboot after saving files, pets, I get "No bootable media
found".
Sro shows the correct files folders etc.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

How did you upgrade?
My problem was not with the live CD like above, but with a flash drive.

I started with a flash drive I had been booting (to 511) from for a long time; I then booted the 525 liveCD and saved a pupsave on that same flash drive. I did not use a 511 pupsave and upgrade; I made a fresh pupsave. There were of course 511 pupsaves still on it. I then decided to make it 525-bootable.

First I booted 525 using the liveCD and the 525 pupsave, and went to do a Universal Installer with that, to replace my 511 on the flash drive with 525. However before it got far into the process I got to a (fairly incomprehensible) message saying the (525) pupsave was mounted. It did not seem to like that so I just rebooted the 525 live CD "pfix=ram", and ran the Universal installer again. I went through and used what one would consider all the normal defaults and it completed OK (cleaned out the old 511 sfs file and replaced it with the 525 one, etc.).

I then opened the CD drawer and rebooted the flash drive expecting 525 to come up but got the symptoms reported above. My guess is the cleanup process is defective. There is ldlinux.sys but no syslinix.cfg. Instead there is still a extlinux.cfg. The syslinux wiki says:
Installing SYSLINUX will alter the boot sector on the disk, and copy a file named LDLINUX.SYS into the root directory.... All the configurable defaults in SYSLINUX can be changed by creating a file called syslinux.cfg.
http://syslinux.zytor.com/wiki/index.php/SYSLINUX

Possibly, I should have let the Universal Installer change my MBR, I don't know. This seems a very bug-prone or confusion-prone process.

I think having the old 511 files on the flash drive and using the universal installer to install 525 made the old files corrupt the new 525 files.
The universal installer is designed to install to a clean location that is empty of any files.
The upgrade option in the universal installer is for full installs and nothing else.
It will upgrade a full install with a newer full install.

The way to upgrade a frugal install or install that uses a pupsave:
Manually replace all the files except the old save file.
(Delete the old files before installing the new ones)
Reboot with the new files and when the old save file is found it will be updated. (Maybe)

Remember that this boots over and over until a session save to CD is performed.
On 2nd reboot after saving files, pets, I get "No bootable media
found".
I can not get this problem to happen for me.
I am writing this from a multi-session CD that I have rebooted and saved too multiple times.
The only thing that comes to mind is, did you start with a completely clean CD?DVD?

gcmartin,
Wonder why your Lupu_525.sfs file icon is different from mine?

The universal installer is designed to install to a clean location that is empty of any files.
I wonder then why it asks you if you want to delete any old files. And I sure don't see how old files can corrupt new ones.

In my case; a new unused cd-rw.
Tried it with Wary and have the same problem.

Will try the pc instead of lappy: see if it makes a difference.

Ouch!

On the pc I get "invalid or corrupt kernel image" on first reboot.
Tried both Pburn and Burn iso to cd.

Edit:

Not working on any version; probably the cd-rw media.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

Hi,

on my thinkpad t42 had the same problem but transferred to usb stick and booted with grub. now OK.

But after installing W-bar and new wallpaper, bottom right hand digital clock has disappeared.

Typing fixmenus in monitor produces an endless loop of :-

(fbpanel:22512):: Gtk-Warning**: Failed to set text from markup due to error parsing markup:: Value of 'size' attribute on (span) tag on line 1 could not be parsed: Should be an integer or a string.

Apart from that all works well. Altough I do have a slow boot up which may be down to 16Gb Transcend usb stick.

Regards Tony

Anything can happen with computers!
This is one possible way.
If the old file has the exact same name as the new file, the program could think it is already installed.
It could see the name already in the file allocation table and not change the location info for the file.
Again, a full install is the only one the Universal Installer is designed to upgrade.
I wonder then why it asks you if you want to delete any old files.
What type install asks this? Are you talking about the wipe option when doing a full install?

I used the universal installer.
Installed Lucid 5.25 to a partition that had a full install of Lucid 5.2
Selected full install
Selected wipe not upgrade.
Install completed.
Booted new install of Lucid 5.25
All kinds of problems.
Biggest one, mouse would not work.
The universal installer seems to have problems with old Puppy files present when doing an install.

Scrambled desktop icons

#17 Post by wuwei »

This is not a specific 525 problem, but it does occur here and before posting to an outdated thread, I thought I'd do it here.

Any change, addition or deletion of an additional SFS file results in scrambled desktop icons at the first boot. This is an unsolved problem with all Puppies, as far back as I can remember and that was 217. The phenomenon even occurs when just the name of the pupsave file is changed from say pupsave-x.sfs to pupsave-y.sfs, or lupusave as it is now.

Somewhere in the forum I read that this issue will be taken up at some future development. Great!

However, for all those of us who can't program themselves, I kindly request a work-around for the time being.

My concept is a GUI that does this:

1. Copy /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin to /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin.copy and overrides any previous versions, if any.
This saves the current desktop arrangement for future needs.

2. Copy /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin.copy to /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin and override it. Restart Xserver.
This brings back the previously saved arrangement after the scrambling occured.

It does not seem to be a difficult programming task, but it goes way over my abilities.

Any takers? A lot of Puppy users will be ever so grateful!

Probably the FATDOG distro screen fonts/icon/extensions. Would you run a ls -l on your CD contents and compare the flags please? This might show something that is missing on this Live media. My listing is offered in a prior thread. Here is the contents of another of the many vegetables I had created in trying to trap this problem in PUP525. This Live media was fully blanked, Pburned, booted, Live system tailored, shutdown requested, and "Saved to CD" before become a vegetable that is not recognized when PC is booted..

Code: Select all

# ls -l /mnt/sr1

gcmartin,
Here is what is on my multi-session Lucid 5.25 CD with save file to CD.
It works with no problem. Multiple reboots and saves.

Where did you get your version of Lucid 5.25?
I ask because I had a lot of trouble with the one from the Diddywahdiddy site.
Mine I got from
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... ppy-5.2.5/

The universal installer seems to have problems with old Puppy files present when doing an install.
To get a good working install:
Tried deleting all files on partition and doing a fresh full install with universal installer.
Did not work.
Used Gparted to delete the partition.
Made new partition of the unallocated space.
Used universal installer to do full install to this new partition.
Worked with no problems.

It seems to me that the presence of old Puppy files does have an effect on how an install will go.
