please open a terminal and try to start audacity with audacity. if it does not start, it will give you a message about whats missing. please post here.

The version I have is Audacity 1.3.4-beta (ANSI). To be more specific I probably made the SFS version by extracting the files from aEdoc

The links on an older Audacity thread are all bad, though that wasn't an SFS.
