rdesktop 1.6 - remote desktop for Puppy |
|
Hello! Does anyone know if a .pup is available for rdesktop 1.6? Currently 1.4.1 is available but it is very unstable (lots of segmentation faults). On the ubuntu forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=403592) they discuss this issue and it's supposedly fixed in 1.5. I see from rdesktop.org that the latest stable is 1.6.
Thank you!

This version is not able to find my keymap (en-us!?) is this a problem on my end or in the compilation of the binary?

Not sure, but I mentioned in another thread that Google will show you lots of people complaining about this, although it seems mostly with older versions.

@ttuxxx, what compile options did you choose, if any?

Just the run of the mill
./configure --prefix=/usr --build=i386-linux
It didn't look like it needed anything complicated like vlc or ffmpeg would.

I'm guessing you didn't strip it either.
BTW if anyone wonders, I just stripped the one Will posted.

Many thanks to ttuuxxx for sharing a working version of remote desktop! Up until a few days ago I was about to give up on Puppy (very reluctantly) because I couldn't get remote desktop to work...it just kept crashing. Coming across this discussion thread saved me the trouble to keep testing other distros that might work on an old pentium II based laptop.
ttuuxxx's version of remote desktop has been smooth and stable.
thanks to all you linux gurus!

Puppy 4.1 doesn't play nice with remotedesktop |
|
Well, I've tested the latest release of puppy 4.1, and discovered that I can't get remotedesktop to work at all. The application won't even display on the screen. I've even tried ttuuxxx's version of remotedesktop1.6 without success.
Has anyone been successful? Is there something I should configure?
Lastly, I'm just your average end-user of linux looking for options to keep an old PII laptop in use. Puppy 4.0 dingo runs great on the laptop but that version of puppy doesn't remember my wireless setting; 4.1 seems to have fixed that issue, but now I've lost remotedesktop funcationality.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe try puppy 4.0 and install this network update
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?mode=attach&id=12313
If not next time when I boot up 4.0.1 I'll try to compile it again.
But I like 4.0 better, lol

The network update fixed the problem of puppy not remembering my wireless setting -- awesome! (ttuuxxx saves the day)
But, now I'm struggling to get remote desktop working, again.
What are the recommended steps for installing remote desktop? Should I install the remotedesktopclient pet (and the related dependencies) and then install ttuuxxx's remote desktop 1.6 pet or install ttuuxxx's pet file first and then remotedesktopclient?
It seems no matter how I install remote desktop, it never shows up on the screen. It will list on the menu under network, but nothing happens after I select it (the hard drive does do a little activity, but that's it).
Again, many thanks in advance (especially to ttuuxxx),

Well, I've solved my problem. I forgot that to get remote desktop working, there's one additional file needed that isn't triggered by any pet dependencies: gnocl. (It's listed as an official puppy 3.0 pet, not 4.0)
Here's a link to a discussion that speaks to the issue:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=15639
So, good news is that both of ttuuxxx's pet files (rdesktop 1.6 and the network wizard) now make for a truly satisfying puppy experience.
Thanks again ttuuxxx!

Well while you found the answers I also made up this package to make life easier for you.
I first compiled Terminal Server Client, which is a GTK front end for rdesktop, Then added rdesktop and finally added gnocl.
So basically its all in one plus you can run from
Menu/Networking/Terminal Server Client
below is a picture of Terminal Server Client it has lots of options, Please report back how it works,
hope you enjoy it
