Booting thru usb pcmcia adaptor in pup 301

I boot puppy fom grub using this menue:-

title Puppy 3.01 on black USB Flash (vmlinuz and initrd.gz on hdb6) with pcmcia
root (hd0,5)
kernel /threeboot/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 pfix=usbcard,pcmcia PMEDIA=usbflash
initrd /threeboot/initrd.gz

This works OK providing the usb stick is inserted in the laptops usb 1 ports.

If I try to boot with the stick inserted in a pcmcia usb2.0 adaptor the boot fails as it does not see the stick.

dmesg shows only ohci_hcd driver is loaded at failure. I have tried putting modprobe ehci_hcd into /etc/rc.d/rc.local
but this doesn't work. I need this driver to be loaded earlier.

Any advice would be greatfully received.

Can't offer any help, except to say that so far as crash and I have been able to determine, bootup support for pcmcia has never been successfully implemented in Puppy.

I wish it were otherwise, since I have a laptop with pcmcia but neither USB nor internal CDROM. Crash is working on implementing this and other boot methods in WakePup2

BTW, I haven't found any other current Linux distros that allow boot through pcmcia, although DSL has(had) a pcmcia.img that claims(claimed) this capability.

The most recent distro I can attest to providing this feature is Suse 9.2, which I managed to install to my laptop via a pcmcia_scsi host adapter (it took hours to install via a SCSI CDROM player).

Subsequent versions of Suse dropped this support, however.

I actually was able to boot through the pcmcia usb2 adaptor in puppy version 2.14r but backward compatability is very poor in puppy and I have had no luck with pup 3.01 and pup 4.

You mean "forward" compatibility, I'm afraid.

Your report on successfully booting through pcmcia is encouraging, even though it's something I can't test, since your pcmcia must have been cardbus (32bit), whereas my laptop is limited to 16-bit pcmcia, which can't support (32 bit) USB of any flavour whether at bootup or beyond.


I'm not clear, though, on what you mean by ver. 2.14r. Was this an alpha or beta of 2.14, or a refinement? And when did you discover this capability had been lost?

This is the kind of sleuthing crash and I have been reduced to with Wakepup, with very little success. Is there any chance that a copy of this 214r version can still be found anywhere? If so, a comparison between it and its immediate successors might allow this functionality to be revived.

and further, because elsewhere "R" refers to "retro", as in 3.01 Retro.

I haven't even been able to find what kernel this version uses. Since it's not shown in the changelog, I assume it's the same kernel used in the version that served as a template (which is not immediately clear either).

And was there a successor to Puppy 2.14R Version 1.01, or is it a dead end?

i think it's not on the list, as it is not an official one.

for all questions and confusions regarding 2.14r you'll have to contact pakt, as he seems to be the creator.

to the unclickable links: beem is right, i've the same opinion. the only excuse is, i'm using an add-on for firefox called 'Linkification' which automatically changes non clickable to clickable links. so if i preview my post, i allways see a clickable link and forget to set the tags

I have been using it for several years and would like to move on.

However the penalty is reverting to usb1 with it's massive loss of speed.

The problem seems to be in the latest kernal. Lots of problems with

PCMCIA.

Ouch! That's BAD news for me. I'm using 3.01 Retro, with the same kernel, on my CDROM and USB-less laptop.

Tempestuous found me the aha152x_cs module that enables me to run a SCSI chain off a pcmcia_scsi adapter on this machine. And I had hoped that all I needed was to somehow get that module modified to work with the later kernels. But your post above suggests the problem is far more serious than that....
