Subject description: "notes from the field" - MSN convo with a user in a tight spot....

Hi, just as I was writing a suggestion for the "My Windows Document Wizard" in the upcoming 3.03ce, a young friend of mine popped up on my MSN messenger. His name is Callum and he is a volunteer at the Community centre where I work. Hes pretty savvy with windows computers. Currently he is in the final year of his school here, and just about to start taking his exams. Ive asked him and he says it is ok to post this conversation.

[22:52:51] Callum says:
Basically my windows xp partition is saying that NTLDR is missing, I looked this up from my friends house and it was talking about drives etc, i'm fairly sure the problem is from me leaving a CD in the drive for like 2 weeks, or maybe not. Anyway thats not the problem.

Thething is I desperately need whats on this partition theres over 3months of school work and alot of other important information, it won'tlet me repair it as it is saying I have the wrong admin password, Igoogled a way on how to change the password though this requires yougetting into the repair *Whistles*

Is there anyway I can possibly fix this? I'm currently running linux from disk

Reply asap please. Thanks. Callum.

Well done to both of you Smile

A chat dialogue is often handy for those who don't understand how two people can possibly communicate by network chat clients. A very good example of that too.

I would like to extract the content and make a help page, guys; can I have your permission please?

Richard in Oz.

If you say so. I could hardly follow the discussion. I handle forums and email fine; those have structure. I handle face-to-face fine, because it's in real-time. But chat has a short time delay (while typing) and no structure. With just two people it's not too bad, but with any more I start getting pretty confused.

Thus why I've never bothered with the Puppy IRC channel other than foundation meetings.

ummm... the best way to learn how to chat... is to chat...as pizzasgood said that chat is rather hard to follow I clouldn't tell who was talking part of the time...

me I can handle IRC but it's not for everybody...if you want to teach someone how to chat give them a chat client with simple instructions not a example of how a chat goes....

that is putting the horse in front of the cart...

haha linux may be "old" to kids but it's not THAT old Smile ... actaully most people on this forum even myself are older than Linux...

of course you may mean that *nix is old and that is true but there are plenty people older than *nix itself...age is relative is it not Wink

and BTW therminology in that post is above the heads of a lot if not most people...not a good introduction

of course that is not what it was intended to be... so COOL linux saved homework....I think it has saved mine a couple times too...

Off-topic: Talking about "old", cb88, your "new" avatar is old. I've seen it on so many forums. It's distracting and not even faintly funny.

I'm sorry.

I thought it was amusing but this is the first time I've seen it. It is very distracting. I tend to pay little attention to pages which have distracting movement. I guess you have to decide if you want people to take you seriously, and remember what you said instead of your avatar. Smile

I was wondering how long it would take before people started complaining about the animation. They jumped at my endlessly walking FFT avatar immediately, and that one was smaller and much less distracting. Actually, I think they jumped at it twice, because I think after a year or two, I forgot that they didn't like animation and happened to try using it after a flaw with my old static avatar prompted me to change.

But I'm happy with the one I've got now. I always did like Muttskii Smile
