Twas taken so :)
Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

Hello 666philb

I have compiled a kernel, using the kernel-kit, on 901.
It works OK but there are some -Wmissing-prototypes errors from gconf.c when choosing configuration option 2.
This applies to recent kernels and happens with Bionicpup as well.
I assume some part of GTK is missing or needs updating.

I now have Windows 2000 running inside VirtualBox on fossapup64 902. It works surprisingly well. There are two "dumb insolence" issues that had to fight with to get it completely working. I'll explain here in case anyone tries the same thing:

Sound: VirtualBox allows you to choose from ALSA, pulse or OSS for the audio interface to the host. If I choose ALSA there is no audio, but the workaround is to choose pulse and then run: apulse VirtualBox. Then the audio works properly.

Parallel Printer: The manual tells you to connect LPT1 to /dev/lp0 but this doesn't work.
To get it to work I had to compile ppdev.ko and modprobe it to create /dev/parport0 and stop udev from loading lp when something accesses a printer. Then tell VirtualBox to connect LPT1 to /dev/parport0
Now I can print from inside win2k albeit at a leasurely pace.

Many thanks for building FossaPup64, it's doing everything I need. I have already retired my BionicPup64 copies on this box.

LXQt is a no go due to missing dependency liblxqt.so.0. Adding the ydrv overwrites the existing Rox pinboard configuration.

liblxqt.so.0 is present as a symlink.

I believe zstd is missing from the FossaPup64 build - needed for .zst compressed archives (e.g. as used by ArchLinux).

I made the mistake of adding the ydrv to check out lxqt after initial boot and creation of a save folder. I performed a clean boot without the save folder and everything appears to be functioning as expected.

I performed another clean install with LXDE. It works quite well. Thank you.

Very new computer.
Motherboard Vendor: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd.
Product Name: MPG Z390 GAMING PLUS (MS-7B51)
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700 CPU @ 3.00GHz
Core Count: 8
Total RAM: 32106 MB
Graphics card Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060
Only have Ethernet for network connection. No WIFI.

Frugal install of Fossapup64-9.0.2, to external hard drive, formatted ext 3.

Boots normal up to the point of network setup.
Get a bunch of error messages, but it seems to be trying to setup.
(sorry, to many and to quick to read completely).

Computer freezes with a error message about e1000e driver issues.
That is as far as the boot up goes.

Below is the working Ethernet connection, booted in Bionicpup64 8.0

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Testing FossaPup64-9.0.2.
Could not connect to the internet unless I installed my locally available pgprs-s57-6.pet. After installation I could do this posting.

Just to mention in addition to my post above.

I think, all programs that are defined by default as default... programs should be in the base .sfs. Without the use of adrv .sfs some of the default... scripts won't work.

rox filer has been a pain! the new rox filer has a major problem of missing left button clicks which become really noticeable if you use it a lot.

i was going to use https://github.com/jun7/rox-filer which doesn't miss the clicks and has all the improvements but that has a few different issues. i will have another look at the jun7 one.

also do have a link to the pgprs-s57-6.pet?

Ok, thanks for the info about Rox filer.

The issue on pgprs in FossaPup appears when it comes to connect.
The output in terminal/window hangs after the first line, so no connection.

The pgprs-s57-6.pet is attached.

testing

#153 Post by foxpup »

hello Phil

I am using Fossapup about a week now and I am enjoying it a lot.

I just want to report a few thingies that came up and that I've collected during this week:

I like the idea of the big adrv, but... I have it always loaded :?
because sometimes something small is missing and it turns out to be in the adrv.
I think an example was the Multi Monitor Setup.
Also, there is always a bigger app as well in adrv that I want to use anyway.
I wonder if the recent StackExtra offer from gyro would help here.

I do not always get eth0 internet connection on startup.

Conky is not transparant except for the pristine boot.
(But I do not want it, so I disabled it at Startup.)

The version of psip is 1.41. There is a 1.42 that gives an option to specify the configfile. This version is also needed for BackSeatDriver.

I cannot adjust settings for touchpad (psynclient; synclient works).

On this old laptop the internal mic does not work.
But it's like that with all Puppys, except the one with pulseaudio, dpupbuster from jose.

The (old) help for notecase is lacking. It is difficult to find it nowadays.
I've added it.

This looks to me already RC build.
I have thrown Citrix and Teams at it on an old 2G ram dell laptop and it all works well.
I do have to use pfix=nocopy because Teams is such a memory hogg.

Well done Phil !!

@foxpup
I compiled a version of psip-1.42 in FossaPup
pjproject is version 1.16
osxcart version 1.2.0
I included the red phone icon in /usr/share/pixmaps and this is now set as the menu icon.
I included the bell.wav ringtone file in /usr/share/sounds
Uploaded the .pet FOR TESTING purposes
You should be able to install directly over the top of what is in the .iso

@666philb
PPLOG does not work
Installing perl-modules-5.30 from PPM fixes it even though this is reported as "Already Installed".

What a surprise Oscar! Thank you!
I already had a pet for 1.42 from somewhere. :-)
Not for a specific Puppy.
I don't remember where from, maybe from Smokey's repos as well.
I just replace the 1.41 binary with this one.

But it is good to have one especially for fossapup.
The different pets install psip in different ways (how to start it) or locations.

By the way, the binary on its own is like portable, you know.
It works for example in Debian as well, puppyphone on Debian. :-)

full install and quickpet

#156 Post by Gnimmelf »

please hold on to the full install option and quickpet!
I have been running bionicpup64 8.0 since it came.
the full install is by far the fastest option - if you look at ram, run hardinfo test and browser speedtest, its far faster than the frugall install and i prefer it by far.
And of course quickpet is a gem!!! only thing i need is that brave browser is in quickpet, so that could be a wish too. the portable Brave and Opera found elsewhere here on the forum, i think by mike walsh, is faster and more low ram than anything else i tried, and testes bether on browsertest -speedbatle, at least on my HP Pavilion g6 laptop.

kind regards Gnimmelf

PGPRS not working?

Could not connect to the internet unless I installed my locally available pgprs-s57-6.pet. After installation I could do this posting.
You have also reported this in the BionicPup64 thread, to which I responded with a request for further information and assistance in my effort to resolve whatever problem you have with the current, rewritten version of pgprs. That response is here:

EDIT: Request for pdiag archive retracted. See my next message.

I noticed this after I posted about running pdiag.

Instead, please look at
/tmp/.gprs_connect.log
to see what should have displayed in the "terminal" window. That should tell us what went wrong. Note that the log is hidden in /tmp.

I am working to correct the failure to show the log in the window.

. . .
I am working to correct the failure to show the log in the window.
While I have been working on an upgrade to pgprs, I have found that the reason for the truncated connect log display is a regression in the behavior of Xdialog's tailbox widget.

I see this issue in FossaPup64, UpupEF and DpupBuster. The tailbox (and logbox) should update the display whenever its input file gets an addition. The updating should stop only when the file is removed or replaced, which is not the case in pgprs.

I cannot find any reports of this problem, so am clueless.

Anyway, as I mentioned before, the log that should display is /tmp/.gprs_connect.log. That should show why pgprs failed for O.F.I.N.S.I.S.

BTW, the version of Xdialog (2.3.1) appears to be the same as in bionicpup64, in which pgprs displays the log correctly. However, the file size of /usr/bin/Xdialog differs considerably between BionicPup64 (89 K (91096 bytes)) and FossaPup64 (85 K (86800 bytes))! They must have been built differently.

Does anyone have any information about the build of Xdialog for recent Puppies?
Richard
