Fossapup64-9.0.3 RC
Fossapup64-9.0.3 RC
RC
Fossapup64 built with ubuntu focal-fossa packages.
This differs a bit from my usual builds by being more modular. sort of a two pups in one. Rather than just the main puppy.sfs and zdrv.sfs (kernel) i've utilised puppys fdrv & adrv utility. So say for instance you just want a bare bones system, you can remove the adrv and get a small 180mb puppy. it can go even smaller if you use tahrpups firmware in the fdrv to something nearing 150mb. You could even compile a new smaller kernel for the zdrv and go even smaller.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
what the different drvs.sfs give you: .....
puppy_fossapup64_9.0.sfs 96mb
a basic system that boots to desktop. no dri drivers, no apps apart from dillo, urxvt & leafpad
adrv_fossapup_9.0.2.sfs 227mb
this will give you something like one of my normal pups, abiword, mtpaint palemoon etc
fdrv_fossapup64_9.0.2.sfs 40mb
this is the firmware separated from the kernel and is easy to edit and change
zdrv_fossapup64_9.0.2.sfs 27mb
this is the kernel and can easily be changed with change_kernels
note that the puppy.sfs requires a zdrv.sfs & fdrv.sfs, the adrv requires the puppy.sfs,zdrv.sfs & fdrv.sfs,.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
this is an RC iso so please test everything
current issues: .......
fixed ##gftp isn't working properly
qemu from the ppm (missing deps)
fixed ##QT apps aren't themed yet
fixed ## abiword defaults to a font that isn't installed
fixed ## jwm crash
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I attempted a manual frugal install with the adrv disabled.
I got a kernel panic (see attached).
My menu.1st was (uuid changed for security):
HP Elite Desktop with Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz, 4 gig ram, Intel graphics.

Hello 666philb
Thanks for this. It's just like bionicpup64 so I didn't need to retrain myself.
I'm using just the Adrv plus a 5.6.6 kernel that I built including the amdgpu 20.10 firmware.
Boots my Athlon 3000G OK
The ethernet did not connect, so I installed rerwin's three recently updated pets, and now it connects OK at startup.
I have loaded my Vivaldi SFS and I'm posting from it now.
Looks really good, thanks again!

Hi, 666philb. Thanks. This is a good idea but could be better if the software packages in the adrv and ydrv are provided each in its own seperate sfs package (would that be possible?). This will make it truly modular. We already have the capacity to extend the usage of the bootup sfs drv's (eg. bdrv, cdrv, ddrv etc.) for those software sfs's that needs to be loaded on "top" of the base sfs, the rest can be loaded as extra sfs's when needed.
Hi 666philb,
Thanks for your efforts to keep Puppy LInux current while computing continues to evolve. You probably won't hear from me much while details about operability are being investigated: I only know enough to cause confusion.
What I think nic007 is referring to is the discussion here, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 64#1049764. I posted some thoughts to the end that thread.
I took a look at Ubuntu Fossa. My impression is that it will make far greater use of snapfiles, with a corresponding decrease in 'nuts & bolts' debs to be found in Ubuntu's repositories. Personally, I think AppImages are more in keeping with Puppies' philosophy: anyone can build, publish and maintain them. And see the discussion here, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 50#1054750. Unfortunately, Ubuntu has chosen to misuse its market share to curtail independent activity or (depending on your view point) poaching. If I'm correct, fleshing out Puppies with cutting edge applications will either require that we compile our own more often -- defeating one of (IMHO, the dominant) objectives of woof-- or that Puppies more closely adhere to the build philosophy of Ubuntu by including the mechanism to make use of snap packages.

Hello 666philb
There's something amiss with the jwm configuration. I don't know whether this is a known problem.
I noticed that using the Jwm desk manager to make the tray autohide had no effect. Also Vivaldi did not get added to the menu automatically, like it usually does.
Looking into it /etc/xdg/templates/_root_.jwmrc has a lot of sections missing. Like the part where I tell JWM to tile Rox windows.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Fossa wallpaper.
This one is a crazy image.
Change the angle, you look at the screen, and the image changes.
At one point, all you see is an eye, looking out.

CUPS problem - kernel switch partly fixes
G'day 666philb,
Thanks for another Pup development.
I can confirm forum-member watchdog's post that CUPS is not yet working.
Like watchdog, I switched to a different kernel - one of ozsouth's, a 5.4.8 - and got CUPS to run to add my Epson printer-scanner.
However, CUPS still has a problem as I could not set the default properties of the CUPS PDF printer to the normal page format of A4. Just a message about banners appeared.
SFS Tools?
Should you consider adding as a basic tool for this new Pup with its emphasis on using sfs drvs, a package or GUI tool to, without fuss for simple users , combine sfs files?
In 32-bit, I regularly use the SFS-Combiner and in 64-bit, there is 64PaDS. Perhaps you know of others? Or is there one already in this Pup which I've not been able to see because of that cat's focused stare?
Thanks again,
David S.

Hi.
Fine frugal runing directly out of the box.
Lack of Samba? thy' not activate and I miss YASSM share search.
Palemoon rapidly asks for the NEW version 28.9.1. Wonder how to change in frugal install...?
Solved the general folder icon, but not the symbolic links icon.
Graphic driver on MPV startup get neat image (no flicking) in a 4K monitor.
Nice font in startup (the new kernel?)
Nice work 666philb really. Go for quickpet updates?

canon printers
I used kernel 4.9.58 to get into CUPS and no Canon printers are listed:
http://home.ptd.net/~artnpeg/canon.png
This sort of thing probably originates in the fact that Canon no longer
supports Linux. With josejp2424 DpupBuster64 8.0 I see something
siimilar where just a small handfull of Canon printers are listed.
Of course, Phil's Thar, Xenial and Bionic 64 bit pups are all ok, showing
a huge # of Canon printers ... and functional CUPS.
I'd be happy to assist some expert with fixing the Canon printer problem(s)
(by testing). Where is rcrsn51 when you need him?

there's so many packages in the adrv that it's not really possible
