Theme

I vote for the Stardust theme which works well with any blue / grey background (my current favourite is the blue raindrops on). Also very pleased that Barry is thinking about HotPup as this makes Puppy even easier to use.

DIY Puppy

The more I use Puppy and explore how I could tailor it for my own preferences, the more I find that I come back to Barry's basic distribution. I would go further than that - I find it very hard to find a better balanced selection of applications for the size of distribution. I find that I don't need...

Making thunderbird launch a URL

Following the advice to add the three line to prefs.js, I found that even though I had edited the text to point to my browser (using Firefox), launching Thunderbird resulted in the prfs.js file reverting back to usr/bin/mozstart as the launch location for the browser. Therefore, I simply copied defa...

Corsair Flash Voyager USB drive WORKING

I've just seen this - very late I know. I use a Corsair Flash Voyager 2GB USB drive, and I'm running 211 on it as I type.

I needed to format the drive to FAT 32 on a Windows PC using the driver disk that came with the drive, and then everything works like a dream.

Cheaper silent solution

Somewhere in the forum there's a reference to a Taiwanese company that makes a similar machine for USD 150. Check www.ewayco.com

Or you can use Ganttproject

Planner is good - I remember using it in Ubuntu.

As an alternative, if you have installed Java, you could try Ganttproject. Just download it and unzip it, then run the ganttproject.command file. This is what you get.

Avast deb file installation - WORKING

I know your post is old, but for anyone interested, simply download the Debian version of Avast and install it with MU's debian installer pup. In 212 beta, I didn't need to load anything else, and it runs nicely (you get an error message on start up about how it can't find a contents file) Here's a ...

Mailwasher Pro working in Puppy 212

As an experiment, I downloaded the Linux version of Mailwasher (the Sarge version) and then used MU's debian installer. You have to load a few deb files for the missing dependencies (again using the debian installer), and then it works. It's not as pretty as the Windows version, and it looks like it...

Thanks Mark

I just wanted to register my thanks and admiration for your work in producing the mini KDE package. I like k3b, and this has enabled me to use it, and other KDE apps. Normally, I don't like KDE as it is a bit bloated and slow, but this version running in Puppy is fast. I also like the way I can togg...

Java on remastered iso

I'd be interested in understanding how you preserve Java after a remaster. I had created my own version of Puppy that I use on a daily basis, which is a form of Puppy Professional (basically to be a quick recovery disk), and although the java folder structure was preserved - I placed it below root -...

Puppy is very close to a practical desktop for business

I read the various threads on making Puppy "good enough" to be used in a business situation. If we put aside our theological comments about Linux vs Windows for a moment and look at the platform we have, it's very close in many respects. I work as a management consultant and programme mana...

I found this USB drive works really well, but you have to format it (in Windows) using the HP USB drive utility, which is downloadable from the HP site.

I find Opera makes this distro boot faster

I like this distro, but I found that it was quite slow to load the XP background and icons. Also, there is a marked delay in loading Firefox or Rox the first time. However, I found that installing Opera and removing Firefox made the loading faster and Opera opens up at "normal" Puppy speed...

Success with Ext2 IFS

I've found this to be a very useful piece of software. I have Windows 2000 Professional running on a dual boot PC, and using this software in Windows means that I can access my Linux files from Windows. Also, more usefully, I've found that I can write to Windows folders, and change Windows files fro...

Problem with PupGet

I've been having a look at this ISO and I'm impressed. One problem I found is that when I try to use PupGet I get the following error message: "There is a formatting error in /root/.packages/alienpackages.txt Probably an alien package install script has appended a line to this file, but with in...

Seem to be a lot of missing files in 5.8.6

Tim, thanks for the quick response. I did that, and then got errors about POSIX.pm missing - located that in 5.8.0, copied it - then got a lot more errors. From a quick glance, there seems to be a lot of missing files in 5.8.6 loaded in Puppy 201 compared with 5.8.0 downloaded using PupGet in 109CE....

problem with 201

I've been happily using Crossover with 109CE. With 201, I get the following error message when trying to install Windows software. I located File.pm in perl 5.8.0 and copied it to the locations identified in the error message, but to no avail.

Any ideas?
