OK, so I switched to 5.7 PAE. It does see my network and connected successfully .... but only once. Now, even though all other systems in the house can access it correctly, when I try to connect, I get "No Internet connection available". Any hints or suggestions? Or should I try a better a...

I gave it another try. With both windows open, it appears that when I delete the rtl8192cufw.bin file from one, it deletes them from both. Also, when I tried moving rtl8192cufw_A.bin and rtl8192cufw_B.bin, I see that they reside in both directories. Moving or copying them gives me an error ("Ca...

Ugh.

I have 5.7-NO-pae. Will move them all but don't mind grabbing the PAE version.

I've got a couple of different rtl files. None that are named rtl8192cufw.bin but a couple named rtl8192cufw_A.bin and rtl8192cufw_B.bin.

I'm tempted to drag both of them to the /lib/firmware/rtlwifi directory. A good idea or no?

I just downloaded the latest Slacko 5.7 and it doesn't see my TRENDnet usb. Please identify the full model name of your adapter. There is probably a driver for it. It's a TRENDnet TEW624UB (wireless N, if that makes a difference). I went to their website and it looks like they just have drivers for...

Excellent -- thanks for this.

I just downloaded the latest Slacko 5.7 and it doesn't see my TRENDnet usb. Will probably be ordering one of the edimax's today.

Oh, from my point of view, it is not all perfect. Some edges are somehow a little rough. For example, if you want to add repos, you have to manualy edit config files. For a newbie like me, this is a little.... complicated. True, but I think that is one of the great and unique things about Linux in ...

Does anyone else just run Slacko off the live CD?

I'm running Slacko 5.3.3 from the live CD and simply love it. Have been doing so for the past year -- development, web design, the works.

Just wondering if anyone else is doing the same and what their experiences have been. It's been great for me -- fast and stable.

Peace to all,

Tom

I have to second 4.3.1.

Although I am currently running Lucid 5.0 and it is working beautifully on a newer (but still pretty old) desktop, I ran 4.3.1 on an ancient laptop and nearly-fossilized desktop for a few years without a hiccup.

Definitely recommended.

just a slight bump

Thanks, Iguleder!

Tried your suggestion with my new full hd install of 5.00 and it went perfectly. I was a little nervous with all the copying/clicking I was doing, but python came up just fine and C is running too.

So I daresay this works all the way to 5.0+.

Many thanks again!

Wow -- surprised you got sound to work at all on 431. I've never been able to do that. 421 works fine -- very solid. But I have burned 431 retro and may try that because I've heard (pun intended) it is more sound-friendly with older systems.

Hello again all, Just an update for anyone interested: :) I've battled this sound issue for a while and am ready to give up. Fiddling with Alsa has provided no joy. I've burned a copy of the retro 4.3.1 because (judging from another thread ) that seems to provide sound for the ancient hardware I hav...

Hi Chris,

I didn't have Retrovol in Multimedia so I went ahead and installed it.

I did what was explained in the thread you provided - still no joy.

Thanks, Chris!

So installing Retrovol and then performing the steps in the referenced thread should help? All I have for a sound icon is the the basic one that normally comes with Puppy.

Regards,

Tom

4.3.1 without sound - but perfect otherwise

Hello all, I have 4.3.1 installed (full HD, 643MB mem) on a Dell Dimension 4500 and am loving every second of it (this old machine is now the fastest one I own). However, I still do not get any sound after running ALSA sound wizard. I've also made sure the AlsaMixer levels are unmuted and maxed, and...

Hello all, Is this project intended to compliment or supersede the current wiki ? I've done a wee bit of editing on those pages (I'm not a whizbang Puppy wizard, but I do like to help out where I can), and I'd hate to see this basically reinvent the wheel. That said, if this wiki is to be a little m...

How would this work with a full install?

I'm in the same boat here -- have 4.2.1 but want to upgrade to the latest and greatest. Would I have to re-install the devx sfs or is that done automagically? My hunch is that I'll have to re-install (no biggie).

Thanks!
