You might try a utility called unetbootin to install the files to your USB stick. Worked very well for me to install 4.10 to a USB stick:

Whoops, problem solved. Was user error. To anyone else coming down this path: beware the fact that the default mouse type in the keyboard wizard is "serial", and not whatever you're currently using. I was using a USB mouse, but after running the wizard it was looking for a serial mouse.

Hmm, I may have spoken too soon. After a reboot I now have no mouse. I have a mouse pointer, but no mouse movement. Has anyone successfully installed and run this on a thumbdrive? I used unetbootin to install eeeTiger to a thumbdrive, but it won't boot past the boot manager screen.

I've used unetbootin with other Puppy distros, but only based on 4.0.

I'm on an Asus eee 1000H if that matters.
