Thanks for the tips. If the problem is simply that the PET file errors out when it doesn't find the display, maybe it would make sense to build some sort of exception handling into the PET file execution? As it stands, apt-get is far easier to use, especially for remote administration. I know its no...

Hmm, I still get "Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:", and the pet doesn't appear to be installed.

I'm running Puppy 5.2, using a live CD that writes settings to the HD.

I'm guessing the problem is that PETs aren't executable. If so, is there some command/utility I can run to install a PET over commandline?

> petinstaller mpg123-1.13.1-w-20110207.pet

Or something like that?

How to install a PET over SSH?

I'm trying to install a PET remotely, over SSH. I'm trying the following:

Code: Select all

wget http://www.smokey01.com/coolpup/mpg123-1.13.1-w-20110207.pet

./mpg123-1.13.1-w-20110207.pet
But I get "permission denied", even though I'm logged in as root.

Any tips?

Possible to view stdout remotely over SSH?

I have a process running in a terminal window on a Puppy box, and I'd like to view its output via SSH from another computer. In other words I don't simply want to view its CPU consumption and all that, but the actual output to stdout and, if possible, stderr. I'd also like to continue to be able to ...

I did, and found a lot of promising threads, though all seem to be aimed at creating boot menus inside grub. For my application, I'm not using grub: if the thumbdrive is attached, it boots straight into Puppy. And I don't want there to be any options, just a graphical screen covering the bootup mess...

Possible to have a bootup graphic?

I'm wondering if its possible to have a bootup graphic covering all the startup messages in Puppy. I'm setting up a computer for a very untechy person and am trying to make the experience as un-computery as possible. Ideally there'd be a way to see the data in case of a problem. Like hitting tab or ...

Problem rebooting machine from terminal

I'm trying to remotely reboot my Puppy 4.1 box through terminal, but when I run the "reboot" or "poweroff" command the computer freezes. If I close X and then run it, it works fine. I'm using this Puplet, if it matters: http://www.puppylinux.org/downloads/puplets/mipup Any theori...

> Some people had success and other people ruined their installation. > Not sure if unetbootin is good for puppy installs. Interesting. I've used it twice: both times on fresh ISOs to fresh thumbdrives, so no fear of ruining installs. Once was with a Puplet based on 4.10, the other was with a Pulet ...

You might try a utility called unetbootin to install the files to your USB stick. Worked very well for me to install 4.10 to a USB stick:

I guess I should have said explicitly that what I was trying to do is open a gmail composition window in Firefox when I click a mailto link in Firefox. I edited my earlier posts and the subject line to make this more clear. The advantage of sending email directly from gmail as opposed to from an ema...

Thanks for the tip. For anyone else coming down this path, here's how to make gmail the default mail client for sending email in Puppy Linux. In other words, clicking an email link will open a "compose" window in gmail: 1) Make this script that looks something like this: #! /bin/sh firefox...

Gmail as default mail client (SOLVED)

I'm trying to use gmail as my default mail client, and found a script that works great. I followed the instructions on this page: http://studge.com/set-gmail-as-the-default-mail-client-in-linux/ I modified the script slightly for Seamonkey: #! /bin/sh seamonkey "https://mail.google.com/mail?vie...

Thanks, this worked on my Asus 1000H. Small note: I had to run the Alsa wizard before it would work. And in XMMS I had to tell it to use the Alsa mixer. It's funny though, I could swear the speakers sounded much better and louder when I was using Windows. But alas that harddrive is now crashed so I ...

Whoops, problem solved. Was user error. To anyone else coming down this path: beware the fact that the default mouse type in the keyboard wizard is "serial", and not whatever you're currently using. I was using a USB mouse, but after running the wizard it was looking for a serial mouse.

Hmm, I may have spoken too soon. After a reboot I now have no mouse. I have a mouse pointer, but no mouse movement. Has anyone successfully installed and run this on a thumbdrive? I used unetbootin to install eeeTiger to a thumbdrive, but it won't boot past the boot manager screen.

I've used unetbootin with other Puppy distros, but only based on 4.0.

I'm on an Asus eee 1000H if that matters.

That works from within rxvt, but not if I'm pasting text into rxvt something copied to the clipboard from another application.
