This information is usually included in your computer's manual or technical specifications. When I buy a used computer I usually download the manual from the internet in the pdf or html format. How much maximum ram can I put in ?
I usually use a boot disc like "Ultimate Boot CD" ( https://www.ultimatebootcd.com ) to test my hardware ( this disc includes software to test your ram , hard drive , processor , etc. ). You could also download a boot disc specifically for testing your ram like the image from Memtest86 ( http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm ). There is also "userspace" software like "memtester" ( http://linux.die.net/man/8/memtester ) , but I don't know if this is available for Puppy Linux..and How do you know when ram doesn't work
Be aware that the manual and the specs for many older computers were written when the maximum memory STICK size was lower and the figures quoted are limited by the number of slots.
ALL my older computers run more memory that the specs or manuals allow for since chips have higher capacity nowadays although they are still limited by the addressability limit of the MOBO.

I didn't manage to have pixlr with the package manager . I don't understandstarhawk wrote:Use Pixlr and crop it, is what I'd do...
The word 'pixlr' is a link -- click it and it should go to the Pixlr Editor directly, which is a web application.
Unfortunately in the pictures you have posted I do not see your motherboard's make and model. I think HardInfo may have changed since L18L's version. Do you know the make and model of your computer?

No, but I gave my old drum kit away for free to a music store collecting instruments for refugees!

Got it -- third image has the needed information.
Here is a link to the manufacturer specifications of the motherboard in question.

You can have a maximum of 3gb RAM in that board -- however, there's a catch there. That assumes that 1gb SDRAM modules were made, which they never have been. Best you can do, in practical terms, is a gig and a half -- 3x 512meg "sticks" (memory modules).
Go to eBay for this, and avoid Hong Kong / China sellers. Find a seller who has 512meg sticks and buy three of them... that will be your best deal.
Good luck!
