Hi,
I have 3 usb keys (4gb, 8gb, 32Gb).
Only on one of them, I can't boot, the 32Gb usb3.
Gparted confirms that there is one single partition as fat32 on this key 32Gb.
If I plug this key into my laptop, as I want to boot, it's stops just before the boot menu (where I can select from which devices to boot), as soon as I remove the key, the boot continues from hdd.
Only this single key behave so, why????
32Gb isssue?
usb3?
other?
I tried to Gparted the key into a primary 16Gb fat32 partition and an extended 16Gb ext4 partition, and install puppy on the fat32, no change.
Thanks
Can't boot from usb key
RE: Can't boot from usb key
Hi,
A few questions:
Does the hardware in question have a traditional or UEFI bios?
If you have not done so, can you try booting the USB3 stick in a USB2 port?
Supply the make & model of the PC/Laptop and USB3 stick?

traditional, as far I know.Does the hardware in question have a traditional or UEFI bios?
Laptop: Toshiba C855-112
BIOS version: 6.80
Tried, no differenceIf you have not done so, can you try booting the USB3 stick in a USB2 port?
I even tried an USB3 card reader with a SD card and from that one it booted.
So usb3 boot is accepted, except if the usb3 card reader is actually a fake, aka only usb2, but it has the blue colour indicator of usb3.
USB stick in question: EMTEC ECMMD32GB103 (http://www.emtec-international.com/en-u ... -usb-flash)
So, it's puzzling as when I plug this EMTEC key and want to boot the laptop freezes before the bios setup menu & device boot selection menu, as soon as I unplug, I get the bios setup menu & device boot selection menu.
RE: Can't boot from usb key
Hi live,
The issue here is that the BIOS can see the USB3 stick but does not know
what to make of the controller on that particular stick. That may or may
not be the case with other makes of USB3 sticks.
You have said that it does boot from 2 other (USB2?) sticks so if it is
in fact an EFI bios, legacy/csm mode must be engaged for it to have done so.
The fact that the USB3 stick will not boot from a USB2 port IMHO eliminates
a port issue.
This common dilemma is whether the bios or the stick is to blame. There is
generally no seperate option within a bios to enable booting from different
types of sticks.
The only way to be certain is to try USB3 sticks from other manufacturers.
If they fail, as starhawk has suggested, the bios lacks USB3 booting support.
