Subject description: Based on f2fs version of 666philb’s Unicorn building block Pup

ChromeCast Pup V2 Unleashed 5th Feb 2015

Overview:

This remains a specialised Pup for anyone who owns or intends to buy a Chromecast.
The target installation device is an 8GB or larger USB2 or USB3 stick. Ideally a nano stick such as this should be used:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-SDCZ33-008G-B35-Cruzer-Flash-Drive/dp/B005FYNSUA

The intention is that the stick be used with a small wireless netbook or laptop with at least 1GB of memory which will then act as a coffee table controller to stream local media held on a main box or NAS that is connected by Ethernet cable to the wireless router. An Internet connection is required for streaming from sites such as YouTube and Netflix.

Given this arrangement, OOTB this Pup is optimised to run on small 1024x600 or 1024x768 displays. If you run it on a larger display increase the global font size and theme fonts to suit.

The main change in V2 is that it is based on the alternate f2fs image of 666philb's Unicorn-6.0 building block puplet. The kernel is 3.14.20 which is a better fit with Google Chrome & eliminates the previous security issue.

This Pup contains a small fat32 boot partition and a larger f2fs partition which contains the main sfs plus a ready made save-folder with 2.7GB of free space.
It provides some of the speed advantages of a full install to f2fs whilst still performing in the same manner as an ISO running entirely in RAM.

PupSaveConfig has been preset to "always ask" at shutdown or reboot
Upon re-booting or at shutdown the option to save the session or not will always be offered.

Other Features & Changes in V2:

• Chrome Stable 40.0.2214.94 with pepper flash.
• Pre-installed extensions including Google Cast & Videostream.
• Capable of booting from a “difficult” bios.
• Post setup boot is to the desktop, then just press “enter” or the space bar to launch Chrome or click on another panel icon of your choice.
• Easy two digit toggle between browser & desktop.
• Initial Chrome screen set to Chrome apps.
• Some starter bookmarks including a “readme” one detailing hot keys etc.
• Conky display with toggle switch on JWM desktop sub-menu.
• HTML5 with YouTube & with Ted Talks when displayed on YouTube.
• Skype replaced by Talky (WebRTC). Incoming video & audio can be cast to TV.
• Thunderbird 3.4.0
• VLC replaced by Popcorn Time Beta 3.7
• Netflix.

Hi sonny,

I am not sure how the VPN blocking situation stands in Washington State
but Google should reveal that. To test PT without VPN you should be O/K
with films were the copyright has expired:

www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_in_the_public_domain_in_the_United_States

At the end of the day Netflix may be your better option.
@ally. Thanks.

Hello @ETP.

Tested CCastPUP. Boots straight to desktop.

I ask if you would try the following from a Pristine stick, too.

I did the following:
  1. booted Pristine (when to Black desktop with buttons...OK)
  2. noticed that several anomolies, OOTB, needed attention, so I
    1. ran JWM config to have 2x3 virtual terminals
    2. swtched to 2nd virtual terminal
    3. ran "FirstRUN" to resolve the immediate needs
  3. After desktop restart, my desktop came back light gray and desktop icons do not respond.
  4. lost connection, NO IP addresses now.
  5. restarted desktop again (cntrl-alt-bksp) regained control of icons, but desktop still light gray versus original black
  6. But, cannot resurrect the IP address for eth0 use. (yes, I know this primary design is for armchair wireless. But, I am just testing for initial review)
  7. Shutdown, chose "NOSAVE"
Are you seeing same as I?

@ gcmartin,

Thanks for testing. On a positive note it booted straight to the desktop so the install procedure went O/K.

I am not seeing your symptoms but with respect there are 6 steps to the setup procedure but your first step was to deviate from those instructions because of what you perceived as “anomalies needing attention”.

CCPup is intended for small screens with limited space on the taskbar hence the reduction to only one terminal & the removal of a few icons.

It can be run on a larger screen with additional virtual terminals but they should only be created after the setup instructions have been completed.
Note in particular that steps 5 & 6 both call for the “save” icon to be clicked.

You appear to have wisely backed out without having saved anything, so may I suggest you try again following the 6 setup procedure steps to the letter?

Hi Billtoo,

Thanks for testing V2.

Whilst V2 is not intended for large monitors you may wish to try the included WM switcher.
It is partially set up to also work in that mode but you will not get run or raise protection, windows hotkeys or two digit toggle.
There is however less need for them on a large monitor.

Anyone else notice the ACPI lockup on one of the cores?

Any advice?

@gcmartin,

I have not seen that issue thus far. Is it happening on more than one PC?
(Currently working on some fixes for your other issues that can also be seen in one of Billtoo’s screenshots. I should have tested for any side effects of a language change but never thought to do so.)

PostPosted: Thu 12 Feb 2015, 19:06    Post subject: ACPI report from earlier

I "killed" (via HTOP) that ACPI task that was consuming the processor. I needed to burn a DVD and do some minor system housekeeping.

So far, it hasn't resurfaced. I have NOT rebooted this system, nor restarted its desktop, as of yet. So I can only comment that "that the problem has not returned". This system is OOTB pristine.

To answer your question, NO, I have only used it on a single 64bit Celeron, 1GB RAM, PC.

Hope this helps
