Hello everyone,

I tried to load a Quirky 6.2 8GB USB (32-bit) Kingston DataTraveler 635 Flash Drive into my Dell Latitude E4310 laptop, but ...

After Quirky Unicorn 6.2 on the wallpaper appears on the screen, that disappears and I get the following text:

wn-block (8,1Cool (I don't intend the "8 plus )" at the end of the 8.18 to change to an Emoticon in this message, but it does)

The last underline above (on the left side of the page) represents the flashing cursor at the end of the message.

I am using Lucid Puppy 5.2 (with storage increased to 1.8GB) to look at the contents of the Kingston USB drive with Quirky 6.2 on it.

Here is what I see:

Puppy-Linux-520 (folder with lupusave-15ylm14d.2fs inside the folder), boot.msg, help.msg, idlinux.sys, logo.16, syslinux.cfg and vmlinuz.

From what I have written above can anyone see what the problem is with the Quirky 6.2 installation on this USB drive? Can anyone help me fix the problem?

looks like a corrupt initrd. or out of memory on motherboard. Lean towards corrupt initrd.

On the USB drive as it came from OSDisc.com several months ago (with CDs I have been using in the meantime) are the following: boot.msg, help.msg, Idilinux.system, logo16, syslinuxcfg and vmlinuz. I only tried to use the Quirky USB drive last week after I got this Dell Latitude E4310 laptop that has a working USB drive.

To try to find what’s missing on the USB drive I read an article by Barry Kauler at one of the ibiblio pages and then downloaded three items from that page which are also now on the USB drive: unicorn-6.2-8gb.img.xzcrdownload, install-quirky-to-partition, and freeoffice_DOC-2012-rev690-x86.pet.crdownload.

The steps for installing Quirky from that website were for Quirky 6.1:

The steps, for Linux:

Download quirky-6.1-8gb.img.xz, from one of the above links.
Expand and install (for example of Flash drive being sdb) (in a non-Puppy distro, you might have to do the 'sudo' thing, to run as root):

# xz --decompress --stdout quirky-6.1-8gb.img.xz > /dev/sdb
# sync

So I opened the urxvt console in Lucid 5.2 and typed in after # and space:
xz --decompress --stdout unicorn-6.2-8gb.img.xz > /dev/sdb

But what came up was: bash: xz: command not found

I tried again with # xz --decompress --stdout unicorn-6.2-8gb.img.xzcdrdownload > /dev/sdb

But I got the same result: bash: xz: command not found

Ted Dog, when you wrote that it looks like a corrupt initrd I assume you though there would be more on the USB drive than just boot.msg, help.msg, Idilinux.system, logo16, syslinuxcfg and vmlinuz. I assume that OSDisc.com forgot to put a Quirky folder that might have contained what I need to get Quirky running from the USB.

What are your thoughts after this further explanation?

Regards from Ray

I just learned from http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=96881 that install-quirky-to-drive.sh is a script for installing unicorn-6.2-8gb.img.xz to a usb stick whereas install-quirky-to-partition.sh is a script for installing unicorn-6.2.usfs.xz to a hard disk partition.

As I want to install unicorn-6.2-8gb.img.xz to a usb stick I deleted install-quirky-to-partition.sh from the USB.

I've gone to http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky6/x86/unicorn-6.2/live-cd-experimental/readme-quirky-live-cd-6.2.1.91.htm and am now reading how to put the live Quirky onto a CD. Once I have the live CD I hope from there to work out how to put it onto the USB.

I'll let you know how I go.

I just read that this live-CD cannot save a session. It boots up "for the first time every time". In that case I'll keep searching for how to get Unicorn 6.2 onto the USB drive.

I downloaded install-quirky-to-drive.sh and unicorn-6.2.usfs.xz to CD, right-clicked on install-quirky-to-drive.sh and chose permissions (the command was
a+x (make executable/searchable). When I did that the "install-quirky-to-drive.sh" turned green. Then I right-clicked on install-quirky-to-drive.sh and the command was "$@" - now when I right-click on "install-quirky-to-drive.sh" the "Set Run Action" line in the File 'install-quirky-to-drive.sh' line is greyed out so I can't change it to something else in case "$@" was the wrong thing to accept. I don't know how to run "install-quirky-to-drive.sh"!

I'm fairly lost and haven't been able to find any instructions to help install QU onto a USB drive that I can understand.

I guess the next advice might be to give up?

First of all, CTRL-C is your friend in the terminal. If you put something in wrong, get the heck out of there by hitting the control button with the C button.

You may want to read this thread:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=96881

I included in it a menu entry for the install quirky to USB. You basically follow the instructions from there. I choose the item 1 f2fs but you need to be running a fairly recent puppy linux in order for that one to work. Otherwise pick 2 or 3.

Also, you may want to choose to fully "zero out" the usb. It takes quite a bit longer but under your circumstances, it may be needed.

I hope this helps.
