The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

computer not connecting to printer
My original question:
Puppy Linux 528, printer HP Laserjet 5L. Computer isn't connecting to printer. In CUPS, under Printer, message is 'Couldn't read xref table'
and under Jobs, message is 'usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed. Printer drivers installed are: hpijs-3.10.6-dynppd and foomatic-db-20100216-lupu.
I would like to explain that the problem occurred after I had disconnected the printer from the computer in order to change its position. When I re-connected the printer, the problem began.
I had read the topic at http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=59015
but didn't find anything that solved my problem.
Do I need to re-install CUPs (assuming that's possible)?
Thanks again.

Just to be clear:
1. You had this printer working correctly in Lupu 528.
2. All you did was unplug the parallel printer cable, move the printer and replug it. You changed NOTHING else.
Try the following:
1. Run the command: cancel -a
2. Reboot your computer AND printer.
3. In CUPS, delete the current 5L printer.
4. Install the printer again.

I tried what you suggested but it didn't work. (It's unclear to me what is the effect of typing 'cancel -a' in the console.) I deleted and reinstalled in CUPS but I still got the original 'failed' messages. But thanks for your help.

Thanks. I have to leave this now - time demands. No, it didn't print a test page. Than ks for the help and I'll get back later in a few days.
