Subject description: how to get retrovol back after mess up

Forever newbie here

Tried to get more volume, could just barely hear anything.
Volume setting from tray icon was 100%
Opened retrovol and put everything to maximum setting and ticked all the checkboxes I could see. (was following a tip from another poster)

Result was no sound at all and the speaker icon in the tray disappeared.
When I clicked on Retrovol in the main Menu, nothing appeared.

Reboot pfix=ram and had retrovol and same low volume.

running Precise 5.7.1
1Gb Dell PC

searched and saw some advice on setup/retrovol
therefore opened setup/retrovol and saw this, using geany:

#!/bin/sh

#exec retrovol -hide ${BGOPT} #BGOPT is exported from /usr/sbin/delayedrun.

#retrovol 0.10, -bg option no longer needed...
exec retrovol -hide

Did I mess up something in my save file and should I just start a new save or something?

The easiest way out with volume is what I am looking for.

Regards,

Not familiar with your Dell Model... does it have a separate audio card?
Alao, you may have Alsa-mixer installed. Sometimes that has to have a default setting changed.
