The impact of many Video components to our LANs

#1 Post by gcmartin »

This topic is placed in this forum area because of the experimental nature being requested from forum membership.

Scenario
Many/more of this community are attaching smartDevices and camera on their LANs. In doing so, there exist possibilities to use those device via components on a PUPPY distro.

3 Puppy forum members have demonstrated the ability to use such in PUP distros. The PUP distros provides both management and control of the information (in this case, video) that is produced.

This is OK when in the past, there was only one camera and we were just testing to "see". But, now, we are at day 2, more mature, and see additional usefulness that can be derived, particularly in the form of both viewing and capture of video events as well as the playback of those events we capture.

In the past, much of what we have seen has been on use of a single individual LAN resource. But, now that prices have dropped (I am seeing a PT camera in the $40(Ca) ranges and PTZ cameras dropping into the $70 range), as a community, we should expect that more and more users will have multiple cameras and smartDevices on their network with video components that can be seen and captured by an individual PUP, centrally.

This provides PUP users all sort of interesting and novel ways of using any PUP with this characteristic in its foundation.

So, this is a thread, which requests ideas, thoughts, and implementations which addresses using PUPPY to work with such video LAN elements where there is "simultaneous" connectiveness with the video generation that exist in our homes and in our hands.

Please offer ideas for issues, and components necessary to have a PUP be a central component where multiple LAN sources have content that can be managed on or via a PUP and its desktop.

Example ideas for consideration
  • For example, since we may understand how to support one smartDevice for video, how would we support several or many stationary device? Is there low resource software already available for PUPPY use?
  • What can be done to support collection of content from smartDevices which is in our hands and roam thruout the homefront?
  • Can our phones, when used for video, be live components seen by the PUP when in the home?
  • What would be necessary for a home user/family member outside of the home to present "active" content to PUP when outside of the home?
  • Can my smartPhone be used in my car as a videocam for PUP collection?
  • What is the system impact of management components of these elements? And, how should we monitor and report impacts?
These are just some ideas, where the answers are not currently clear, but, are well within the scope of what is already produced by forum members.
