Tahr64-light RC - 12Jan2020 - for older hardware

#1 Post by jrb »

I've been preparing for the 32bit apocalypse and have WooCE'd tahr64-light-6.0.5-uefi-MK1.iso.
  • md5sum: 9c9e4290776e1f827a01de267cbabcff
1st Update tahr64-light-6.0.5-uefi-MK1.iso___tahr64-6.0.5-uefi-MK1.1.iso.delta
  • md5sum 18cad671dc39ce6bba8296f51546a895

See here for fixes and instructions on how to use the .delta
Its a cut-down version of 666philb's excellent tahrpup64 6.0.5 CE built with a newer WoofCE, 17Mar2019, and with a few lib updates in order to run all the latest browsers, well almost all.

Code: Select all

 Actual Used RAM: 125 MB
I cut out most of the large Apps, so it comes with: No WebBrowser, No WordProcessor, No Spreadsheet, No Heavyweight Media Player, No Qt, No Inkscapelite, No Cups. These items can by installed from PuppyPackageManager (PPM), BUT:

There is a QuickApps icon on the desktop, also on the Setup menu, which will install:
  • Cups Printing Software
    PalemoonPortable
Scanner Software - Xsane + Peasyscan
    Ted Word Processor
    Xine Mediaplayer
If you need them. They're all relatively lightweight.

Tested with the latest versions of:
  • Palemoon
    Vivaldi
    Waterfox-classic
    Opera-Portable
    Chrome-Portable
    Firefox72
    FreeOffice2018
All set up as Portable installs on my home (/initrd/mnt/dev_save) drive. Check out Browsers and Internet in the forum. Mike Walsh has been very busy making Portables which are particularly good for old machines.

Also tested on a Pentium4, 512Mb ram, machine. Vivaldi bogged down on the second Tab, but after I used pupswap to create a 512Mb swap file it ran quite well. :D

Looking forward to hearing how it performs on your vintage 64bit gems. (Sadly, I find that 3 of my 4 working laptops are 32bit only, oh well. :( )

Cheers, J

Forgot to mention above. Check out Menu->Setup->Default Applications Chooser. Once you have installed an application, say a portable browser, just drag the execute file, the one you click on to start the program, to the appropriate box and you have a defaultprogram. i.e. defautbrowser. 8)

I think, I'll give this one a try. I loved tahrpup.

@ jrb,

Downloaded and had a try.

Amazed by its lightening speed. I am running my favourite waterfox classic browser and posting from it now.

I will test it in more detail this weekend.

Thank you very much indeed .

This OS looks like a good candidate for a solid ZoneMinder set up. with many of the unnecessary packages removed. Tahr was excellent as a camera security system and NVR.

This version should exceed those builds

Cups and Xsane not working for me. Cups has a "filter failed" error with my brother laser printer. Xsane has a "no devices available" error with a hp scanner. I can use a chroot jail from precise for scanning and printing.

LATER: I have got xsane working by installing the hplip deb drivers from the Dog Linux repository and precisely hplip-print-scan_3.18.12_amd64.deb.

Thanks for the feedback watchdog. Since neither Cups nor Xsane are installed in Tahr64-light (I guess I should modify the Cups Printer Wizard to reflect that) would you mind describing your install procedure?

I only have one printer, a Brother HL-2370DW, and when I installed Cups-1.75 using the QuickApps feature it installed and worked properly.

I didn't think to test installing Xsane, but I see installing from PPM is a bit problematical. I'll see if I can work out a solution and add it to QuickApps.

Any help you can offer will be appreciated.

Thank, J

Edit: I just installed http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky ... pril64.pet and http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky ... pril64.pet and my HP Scanjet 3500 was auto-detected and used to scan and save an image. :D I will add these and Peasyscan to the QuickApps menu.

I have done several attempts. My printer is the Brother HL-2130 which I know it works with the driver of HL-2040foomatic which is listed among the available drivers after installing cups by QuickApps. But it does not work with "filter failed" error. I also used the retired 64bitInstaller by rcrsn51 and I installed the original drivers from Brother site. They are shown in available printers as HL-2130 but there is again the error "filter failed". In cupsd.conf I have set the "debug" loglevel and captured in error_log the following odd response:

I see one mention"I found out that qpdf was missing when I tried to rebuild cups-filters. I can print again, now." that sounds like the same problem. Try installing qpdf-5.1.2-april64.pet and see if that helps. Qpdf was included in the original Tahr64 as well as April64 and Wary64. Perhaps it was needed?

Yes, it is needed but I also installed:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky ... pril64.pet

and installed the tahr original ghostscript_9.26 and dependencies by PPM instead of:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky ... pril64.pet

to get my printer working.

Excellent :D , Glad you got it sorted. I will definitely add foomatic filters and qpdf to QuickApps. I had a look at ghostscript_9.26 in PPM but it needs 8 dependencies and is a 36 Mb install. :( My Printer works with no ghostscript at all. Are you sure your's needs ghostscript_9.26? If so I'll add it to QuickApps.

I'm sorry. My printer needs ghostscript_9.26. It works with the HL-2040foomatic driver but not with the original Brother drivers for HL-2130 which are only 32 bit. These are my findings.

I have posted here a minimal 6MB package of Ghostscript 9.05 compiled in Tahr64. It may work in your Tahr64-light after the missing CUPS stuff has been restored.

That ghostscript 9.05 makes the magic! I have tested it in a live session and it works making my Brother HL-2130 printer alive.

:D When you get a chance can you describe everything you have needed to install to get your printer up and running?

Thanks, J

I have booted without the savefile. Install cups from QuickApps: all the packages are needed without ghostscript. Then I have installed:

foomatic-filters-4.0.17-april64.pet
qpdf-5.1.2-april64.pet
ghostscript-9.05-x86_64.pet

By PPM I have installed foomatic-compressed-ppds and dependencies.

Then choosing Brother HL-2040-foomatic driver for my HL-2130 the printer works.

Only minor issues so far
There is broken link for Menu-->Fun-->Hexalate

Actually few of us need to play using Tahr64-light. No one would complain even if all the games are removed.

Burniso2cd appear once in "utility" and once in "multimedia"

Leafpad text editor seem unnecesary when Geany is also there (Fatdog64 only have Geany)

Thanks for the feedback quirkian2new. I have placed your first two items on my "fix" list.

You are right about Geany, I use it 98% of the time. But when I want to compare two files side by side and edit one or both, I open both in leafpad. Xfdiff is good but you can't edit from it.
