Carolina: Vanguard Edition Release 2 December 2014

#1 Post by battleshooter »

Carolina: Vanguard Edition... based on Carolina 1.3 (Geoffrey, elroy, and rg66) based on Saluki (Jemimah), based on Racy 5.2, (our ex-benevolent dictator, Barry Kauler)! :D

Introducing the Carolina you know and love... now with:

3.18.1 kernel
New drivers for new hardware!
2.20 Glibc
Support for new software!
4.9.2 GCC
Meets new software compiling requirements!
Xorg update
Huge update from Xorg 1.11.0 to 1.16.2!
Mesa update
Uses fancy new gallium drivers as well as now providing out of the box hardware acceleration! :shock:
Kernel update
Small step up to 3.18.1 but now compiled with all kinds of new drivers updates from joystick/gamepad vibration to thermal sensors, KVM drivers and everything between!
Alsa update
Frankly I don't see a difference but if it does something for you...

Image

New updates are backwards compatible so all your favorites from Carolina's massive repo aren't left behind.

Image

Easily change the theme if you hate it! Carolina/Saluki's easy to use tools are available

Image

Radically change appearances with a click using Xfce-Theme-Manager! (more themes to come)

Image

QT now comes with the GTK engine for themeing consistency, your GTK themes will be replicated in QT apps.

Notes:

So much picture spam. Sorry guys. I've just always wanted to put a lot of pictures on a puplet post and try to sell it :mrgreen:

Now I've done it, hopefully you'll never have to see it again :P

I hope everything works. That's always awkward after a big sales pitch :oops:

Devx and headers are being uploaded at the moment.

Clementine has actually been upgraded to 1.2.1, so that includes Android remote control. That's a lot of fun.

In past versions I've released there's been an issue with poor hardware compatibility. I hope I've resolved it in this release, but if I haven't please attach dmesg to bug reports.

Good news yerc1! I've compiled the Chrome support apparently needed for your touchpad... really hope it works :)

Wasn't sure about the name for this remaster, went though a few, rebuilt it each time. (Not because of the name change, different factors) First it was Carolina 2.0, then Radioactive, Geoff suggested Zombie :lol: we even have a logo for that. Then I used a thesaurus and picked Vanguard.

The main reason I ditched calling this remix "Carolina 2.0" (I didn't want the stress of living up to the legacy :wink: ) is because it's not meant to be a progression, or the next thing you should upgrade to after 1.3. It's more for people who need it or like to live on the edge. (A testament to my remastering skillz). I plan to keep basing it on whatever Carolina Geoff releases next. So 1.4, and then I'll base Vanguard on that. Hence the phrasing "Edition".

Carolina: Vanguard Edition

#5 Post by Billtoo »

I installed to a 32gb flash drive with the PUI:

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Sat 13 Dec 2014 on Vanguard-Carolina 1.3 Linux 3.18.0 i686
5.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M880G [Mobility Radeon HD 4200]
oem: ATI ATOMBIOS
product: RS880M 01.00

X Server: Xorg Driver: radeon
X.Org version: 1.11.0
dimensions: 1024x600 pixels (270x158 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.10.3

AMD Athlon(tm) II Neo K125 Processor
Core 0: @800

Working great except my wireless adapter isn't seen so am using wired.

Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43225 802.11b/g/n (rev 01)

EDIT: My broadcom adapter is now working, I ran the network wizard again after doing a reboot and there it was :)

Thanks

Some preliminary tests:
Downloaded iso, md5sum correct. Frugal install using Grub4Dos to ideflash, ssd, and sata hdd on three machines so far. I like :D the default theme for a refreshing first look. So far, I'm batting 2 for 3 on the machines.

The 2005 era Pentium M laptops with ipw2200 wireless, intel 855GM video, and intel integrated sound are just fine. Video res correct using intel driver with glxgears at 585 FPS, sound fine with simpleGTKradio installed and working fine, WPA2 wireless connection using Frisbee flawless (haven't used enough yet to see if it still has the ipw2200 dropouts).

Ditto for the slightly newer Fujitsu S6520 laptop with iwlwifi (5300 chip) and all intel graphics and sound.
Battery monitor works correctly on both the above as does whiskermenu, panel config etc.

The Bay Trail-D box (intel quad core j1900 processor with intel 4000 HD video) will not set up video correctly or use the intel driver. Exactly the same problem as seen in stock Carolina and in earlier rekerneled versions (mine and yours). That I'm certain is a function of the Xorg/Mesa/Intel driver versions in Carolina. Same but milder video problems in X-slacko 2.x, and none in Tahr based pups. USB support ok on the Bay Trail box with the newer kernel, as is wired ethernet and sound. Lots of fun testing that on a quarter screen display :?

Posting from vanguard now on my workhorse Pentium M laptop.

Thanks,
Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

@battleshooter,

The Hardinfo usb devices aren't working properly, it needs replacing with the one I compiled for your previous build.

Wow, immortalized in the internet archive... how flattering ;) Ugh, my corny sense of humor also recorded for posterity too. :?

Y'know Ally, I've got to say I'm still trying to figure out if you're a bot... you're so efficient :)

Billtoo wrote:EDIT: My broadcom adapter is now working, I ran the network wizard again after doing a reboot and there it was :)
Yes! Good to know Broadcom wireless is a go :D

2/3? That's pretty good. :) Can I see the dmesg for the Bay Trail? Might as well see if we can get it going.

Argh, that was silly of me. I actually checked and saw text in the USB devices section and assumed 1.3 had that version installed, so didn't bother with the pet. Next round I guess.

Splutter... That's ... you're not the only one choking and coughing. :shock: That's a hugely complimentary assessment coming from you Geoff :D

Thanks for all the testing on multiple platforms! I was curious as to how it would perform.. so far so good :)

@battleshooter

Snappier here too with lower idle cpu than stock kernel Carolina on the 1.6 GHz Pentium M. That's in line with 3.14.20 and 3.17 rekerneled Carolinas in my experience. See the attached screenie. I'll fire up the Bay Trail and get the dmesg tomorrow.

@Geoffrey & battleshooter

Note the multiple acpid processes in the lxtask (the 9acpid in the first line is an artifact of testing..manually adding an additional process by executing while acpid is running and shooting the screenie before it finished). That is a result of X-restarts and I've seen it in Carolina for a while and in X-slacko. I changed the test for acpid in line 9 of /root/Startup/9acpid to the following with no more multiples.

Code: Select all

if [[ -z `pidof acpid` ]] ; then
Guess I did it first in X-slacko when I switched to the busybox acpid and in the process noticed them. The .acpid_on file must not survive an X restart while acpid does or something like that.

Thanks for that.
Marv wrote:Deleted: double post.. Still have the ipw2200 dropouts.
Without dmesg I can't be positive, but some people say it's due to firmware.

Try this newer firmware?

Ok noted. I'll put it on the "To be updated/added" list.

Hah, don't be so harsh on yourself. Besides, obsession gives the impression of dedication :) Take it from a pro :P

That's the 3.1.5 firmware which is what I run. I'm pretty convinced it is a driver/interrupt conflict on these particular laptops. An old and pretty well beaten horse. PWF with a static IP works perfectly, connects instantly and that's what I use with them other than for testing new pups. The Bay Trail solution is far more interesting.. at least to me.

Edit: Throw in another plus here. Lid suspend works perfectly OOTB on both the Pentium M and on the core 2 duo laptops.

Isn't 33% CPU usage really high?

Alright then, if you want to give the ipw2200 issue a pass. As a point of curiosity though, is there any OS/distro/puplet that it doesn't drop out on?

Here's a couple of things that can be edited:

Skype doesn't need the lib hack that was for carolina.

Delete /usr/share/skype/skypelibs and edit /usr/bin/skype to read

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
# Skype with PulseAudio emulation for ALSA
#
APULSEPATH="/usr/lib/apulse"
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$APULSEPATH${LD_LIBRARY_PATH:+:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH} exec "$@"
/usr/share/skype/skype
I found Master PDF editor stopped working as it was using the lib hack, so it can also have these deleted:
/opt/MasterPDFEditor/lib
/opt/MasterPDFEditor/ld-linux.so.2
/opt/MasterPDFEditor/master-pdf-editor.sh

Edit /usr/bin/master-pdf-editor to read

Code: Select all

#! /bin/bash
exec /opt/MasterPDFEditor/master-pdf-editor
