PuppEX Tahr Linux Live CD with kernel 4.0.1-PAE-puppex Subject description: A simple remaster of Puppy Linux Tahr 6.0 |
|
NEWS 150501
PuppEX Tahr build 150501 uses a PAE enabled kernel - 4.0.1-PAE-puppex. (Kernel 4.0.1 was released 150429). With PAE compiled into the kernel PuppEX can address up to 64GB of RAM. Google Chrome is now included. Just to make it possible to watch Netflix movies. I've also added Tahrpup's Service Pack 6.0.2. NVIDIA Graphics driver 346.59 is installed.

NEWS 150309
A new version of PuppEX Tahr is ready. Most important changes: I've changed kernel from 3.14.20 to 3.19.1-PAE-puppex and installed NVIDIA Graphics driver 346.47. The Nvidia driver will be used if your computer/card is "modern" enough. I've also added Tahrpup's Service Pack 6.0.2 and Google Chrome. Just to make it possible to watch Netflix movies. With PAE compiled into the kernel PuppEX now can address up to 64GB of RAM.

EDIT 150112
A new version of PuppEX Tahr is ready. Most important changes: I've changed kernel from 3.14.20 to 3.18.2-PAE-puppex and installed NVIDIA Graphics driver 340.65. The Nvidia driver will be used if your computer/card is "modern" enough. I've also added Tahrpup's Service Pack 6.0.1 and Google Chrome. Just to make it possible to watch Netflix movies. With PAE compiled into the kernel PuppEX now can address up to 64GB of RAM.
Edit 141221
A new version of PuppEX Tahr is ready. This time with kernel 3.18.0-puppex.
EDIT 141209
Today I have uploaded a new version of PuppEX Tahr. It uses kernel 3.17.6-puppex. Kernel 3.17.6 was released 141207. (So was kernel 3.18, but it cannot be used in Puppy Linux/PuppEX just yet).
EDIT 141124
Today I have uploaded a new version of PuppEX Tahr. It uses kernel 3.17.4-puppex. Kernel 3.17.4 was released 141121.
EDIT 141116
Today I have uploaded a new version of PuppEX Tahr. It uses kernel 3.17.3-puppex. Kernel 3.17.3 was released 141114.
PuppEX Tahr 32bit is a remaster of Puppy Linux Tahr 6.0, released on October 28, 2014. Kernel 3.17.4-puppex is used. Kernel 3.17.4 is the latest available stable kernel from Kernel.org as of 141124. PuppEX uses the original Puppy Tahr Desktop. I have added PCManFM and LXTerminal. They are more useful than ROX-Filer respectively RXVT, I think. The ISO file is on the whole 421 MB, which is due to me including also NVIDIA Graphics driver 340.58, Adobe Flash, Gimp and compiling tools. Puppy Tahr original is of only 199 MB. PuppEX is despite this still running as fast as the original, which means it runs very, very fast compared to most other Linux systems. (Puppy/PuppEX runs from RAM).
Compatible with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
The beauty of Puppy Tahr 6.0 is that programs that are available for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS also can be easily installed and run in Puppy Tahr (and thus also in PuppEX).
MOST IMPORTANT CHANGES
I’ve changed kernel from 3.14.20 to 3.17.4 and installed NVIDIA Graphics driver 340.58. The Nvidia driver will be used if your computer/card is “modern” enough.

Tried first on some older hardware and didn't have much luck. Moved on now to newer hardware and appears to be working well.

Did a manual frugal install to the HD of a 2ghz HP laptop (nc6120) with 1.25 gig of RAM.
Runs nicely, no problems so far.

Yes, I always test my Puppy remasters on different computers. "Frugal" and "full" installations. That goes for my other remasters too. I.e. I test them before I release them.

I knew about your other stuff, and have checked out your website from time to time.
One oddity with PuppEX Tahr. I was looking at the desktop wallpapers, and after trying a different one, the original just disappeared. No longer exists in /usr/share/backgrounds. Hardly a major bug, but strange all the same.
This might be very subjective, but this version does seem slightly snappier than standard Puppy Tahr, which I have been using regularly since it came out. Urxvt opens instantly for instance, but there is a lag on the official Tahr.

Tested this on Toshiba Chromebook CB30 model.
synclient produces this error message:
Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?
So yes, the touchpad doesn't work.
I believe support for the Toshiba Chromebook touchpad has been added to the kernel starting with version 3.17. Link https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1296534
The touchpad works in both Fatdog64-700 beta2 and Bodhi Linux 3 RC1 running kernel 3.17.
Is there anything I can try to get the touchpad working with PuppEX?

I don't think I can help you. PuppEX Tahr works without problems on my five computers. I think one has to accept that not every linuxsystem/kernel is compatible with every computer and all kind of hardware. (EDIT a little later: I must have "forgot" to include support for the Toshiba Chromebook touchpad when I compiled the kernel. I will try to remember it next time...).

I don't know why that is, but I've found that the best way to change Desktop wallpaper is to replace /usr/share/backgrounds/default.png with another picture called default.png. Then restart X.

No worries.
Tahr 6 has nice improvements over earlier official releases and it has an LTS base too.
Do you plan of updating this remaster in the future?

Will include? Or already included in this update?
