How do I setup cloud backup and sync?

#1 Post by wert »

I have tried the dropbox installer from quickpet tahr but after installing it says I'm not connected to the internet. So I don't think it's still working in puppy linux. I'm really looking forward to setup a sync of my libre office docs to google drive so the second option was insyc. I double click the package insync_1.3.17.36167-precise_i386.deb, it installs successfully but when I start insync a dailoge tells me "Insync. Your disk is low on space. Please free disk space then try again". However my personal storage of puppy still has a free space of 126M. Thereafter, I tried overgrive Overgrive but even worse it gives me this verbose return:

Code: Select all

root# ./overgrive
./overgrive: line 1: $'\003\363\r': command not found
./overgrive: line 2: $'^\277VWc\b@s\356\031dd\001lZdd\001l\001Z\001dd\001l\002Z\002xKe\003e\004e\001j\005\203\001\203\001D]4Z\006e\001j\005e\006\031d\002d\003d\004d\005f\004k\006rhd\006Z\an\006d\aZ\aq:We\ad\ak\002r\r\001dd\001l\bZ\be\bj': command not found

Hello,

Test with tahrpup 6.0.6 32 bit

I tried directly with binary here https://linux.dropbox.com/packages/

Taked https://linux.dropbox.com/packages/debi ... 0_i386.deb
next extract files.

Install daemon with (in .../dropbox_1.4.0_i386.deb.extracted/usr/bin) open, shell with right click in directory, choose Window / shell command ... , enter :

Code: Select all

./dropbox start -i
...

Run "dropbox start -i" to install the daemon

Now I'm looking for a google drive solution

#3 Post by wert »

Many thanks for your help but I've now resolved to use google drive service since I already have an account there that's hard to migrate to dropbox. I've seen that many linux distros nowadays have native google drive support.
Do you think it's possible to setup a google drive backup and sync in my system?
I've heard that gnome window manager has builtin google drive so would installing gnome in my puppy do it? Or is there a gnomepup or something?
Thanks in advance for a much needed help.

I have dropbox working a while now on Tahr 6.0.5. If I remember I installed it from Quick Pet then configured it and set up the dropbox local directory outside of the Tahr file system.

Bingo! I have thought of a solution to my google drive backup and sync application.
Don't know if this is a good idea so please advice me before I try it since I dont have knowledge on filesystems.

I installed google-drive-ocamlfuse which enables me to mount my google drive and use it just like i do normal local files and folders on my disk. I think the filesystem is fuse based or something like that.

Although there's noticeable slowness when working with the files and folders e.g. opening a folder with lots of files in rox, apparently all file operations i can do in local disk I can also in my mounted google drive.

Hence, I'm thinking of using snap2 for the backup and sync solution or at least the sync only since snapshot possibly won't work with the fuse thing.
The idea is to create a sync using the mirror feature so that a local folder is mirrored to it's identical in google drive every 5 minutes using snap2 engine. Is this a good applicable solution or are there data loss risks? Thanks in advance for your help.

Personally, I use this exclusively....

Save Folder Backup and Restore

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 010#950010

I have an external drive that I back up to. I find it much faster than online storage. The pups I use, I have a sync folder to my network pc which gets backed up on megasync.

I'm prone to goofing things up and the backup and restore program has been an extremely fast and reliable tool.

Oh good. I don't have time to read through the google-drive-ocamlfuse_0 properly so I'll trust my data on this application. After all the devs liken the mounted drive to usb storage in their description. No use wasting time trying to get additional packages like overgrive or insync when a few scripts will work just fine with this.

I'll be mirroring using rsync rather than using preconfigured backup software like snap2 coz it's far more efficient for the purpose. Snap2 is kind of useless anyway;the snapshot feature won't even work with like all USB storages.

BTW nice find, I'll definitely test it next time I wanna backup my saves.
