This is stolen without shame from Grafpup-linux Wink
Packaged as dotpup with menu-entry.

REQUIRES Gtk 2.8:

it seem that most of your new dotpups ne gtk 2.8. Do you think that gtk should be updated for the next pup versions?

yes, there are plans to upgrade to 2.8:
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=9509&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=16

There are some good reasons.

In the past, Gtk had not all functions programmers need, so they used Gnome-libraries in addition.
That was bad, as for many even small programs you needed the huge Gnome-stuff.
Now the most important functions went into Gtk itself, what allows to build powerfull programs also without Gnome.

I think Thunar is a good example, it is really small compared to Gnomes Nautilus-filemanager Smile

Mark -

No need for shame at all anyway, I like to see some spillover into Puppy when possible.

It should be noted that this is a development snapshot, so a bit unstable. I also had to hack the source slightly to compile as it came complete with some fatal errors.

If you are interested in Gimp development this will probably be of a bit more interest to you.
http://grafpup.com/packages/dotpups/graphics/gimp_cvs-20060625.pup
This is a cvs snapshot as of June 25th. I started building them and packaging as dotpups about two months ago, usually every other week but I'm swamped at work so a little behind. Anyway the whole thing started looking and acting a bit more polished shortly after the 2.3.9 release and it's very interesting to see. They changed the look considerably by using a new iconset for all the tools and menus, which is immediately apparent, sped up the loading of the program a bit, made the user installation faster, and a bunch of other nice changes.

The dotpup can be run right alongside another gimp version since it's completely self contained in a roxapp, which sets up it's own library path when run. I will probably update to a newer snapshot sometime in the next week. I stopped posting them for a while because the version of GTK required was actually newer than what Grafpup 104 supported.

BTW, Grafpup-2.0 will be using approximately the same GTK2 as what you have compiled. It would be especially nice if we could get Puppy itself upgraded as well, I would like to see full binary compatibility again.

Nathan

Hey, MU, I thought you were supposed to be disfunctional due to the heat Wink

New glib, GTK, Gimp, Thunar, IceWM... you're sure keeping yourself busy.

Nathan I would urge you to package the Gimpshop version of Gimp
http://plasticbugs.com/index.php?p=241

I recently read an interview with a leading penguin who said he found Gimp indispensible but barely understood its workings.
Shameful.

The advantages of full compatibility between the excellent Grafpup and other Puplets of Puppy (especially with XDG) which I hope will be adopted within the next few versions of Puppy.

I would remind you that Barry is intending to be a developer and work on another project and MAY be handing over day to day development to someone else in the next year or so. I think most of us would prefer him to continue indefinetely . . .

This is part of the reason for the CE (Community Enhanced/Editions) versions of Puppy.

Thanks Nathan, I repackaged the CVS-Dotpup, it adds a menu-entry.
This version seems to start quicker, looks polished and has some new things like a new scaling-method.

Actually I already have, twice. I made dotpups of GimpSHOP-2.2.8 and 2.2.10. I believe Mark still has a slightly modified version of the 2.2.10 dotpup at dotpups.de. The current version is 2.2.11 so it hasn't moved forward a whole lot, I personally don't see a need to upgrade it right now. I will upgrade it for sure when 2.2.4 comes out.

Gimp has a bad rep for having a bad user interface. Frankly that's stupid in a lot of ways. Photoshop has a very complicated user interface also. Let me put it like this, an airplane is more complicated to operate than a toaster and always will be. Gimp is more complicated to use than some other programs BECAUSE IT DOES MORE. GimpSHOP is no easier or harder to use than Gimp assuming you are new to image editing. It is merely a bit more comfortable for Photoshop users because the menus have been rearranged to mimic those of Phtotshop. I will concede that the menus are not entirely logical in the stable branch of Gimp, but if you check out this cvs snapshot you'll notice that has been given significant attention recently and is much improved. Basically though, don't expect to be able to use something as powerful as Gimp without some learning curve, and people shouldn't be criticizing it because they haven't taken the time to learn it.

I have taken some time to learn the interface and find it perfectly comfortable now.

Nathan

Gimpshop is here:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Graphics/GimpSHOP-2.2.10.pup (5.6 MB).

If you cannot save .xpm , then install this small update:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Graphics/libXpm.so.4.11.pup (37 kb).

Gimpshop works fine in old Puppys, too.

If you need no professional graficsprogram, but just a very very fast tool for smaller image-manipulation tasks, use the old version 1, it is fast as hell:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Graphics/gimp1.2.pup (2 MB).

I just uploaded a newer cvs snapshot to grafpup.com, in the same directory as before. This is the current tree as of today, 7-30-06. I may possibly compile the latest GIMPshop later, haven't decided yet.

german localization:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Graphics/Gimp-2.3.10-german-locale.pup (160 kb)

all other localization files (all other languages):
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Graphics/Gimp-2.3.10-all-other-locale.pup (5.1 MB)

the second one is 20 MB extracted, so you might want to delete all languages you do not need from:
/root/my-roxapps/gimp_cvs/share/locale

I extracted them from a debian package:
http://packages.debian.org/sid/gimp-data
