666philb ,,

Just to report that with Tahr, I am encountering a problem that I have never ever encountered before when using various puppy os.

I tried many times but the downloading of large files (more than 100MB) is unstable from certain websites.

Sometimes, in palemoon it shows that there is activity of downloading going on (speed/seconds) but the size of what is being downloaded doesn't change.

I seems to be the only one having downloading problems with Tahr.

When I try downloading the same file using other puppies (eg Phatslacko, Precise, ...windows 7), downloading was successful again and again.

Again and again I would try downloading the same file or other files with Tahr, the downloading fails or is unstable.

Just sharing my experience.

other than this issue, Tahr runs quite well on my old

MSI U270 netbook
AMD E450
4GB RAM
RTL8188bgn
Multiple sound card.

pchan, you are not alone.

I have been having problems with downloading and total freezes in Tahrpup.
I have had it happen with Pale Moon, all versions including 25.2, Firefox from v24 to v34.05, Slimboat, chrome v32.
I've tried with flash, without flash, etc.
It has happened in Tahr 6.0, and 6.0.1, with and with out various bug fixes, with frugal instal and full, on usb stick and usb external HD.

It does NOT happen when I use Slacko 5.7.0, the only other puppy that I have working with this computer

I've only used the one computer,
Toshiba Satellite c55t-A5123
Intel N2820 Duel Core 2.13 Ghz
Intel HD Graphics
4 GB RAM
Bios Upgrade to v1.40 (so I can boot CSM)
RTL8188ee

For some reason, I like the tahrpup, and I have spent way more time trying to get this to work than any other distro.

Patiently awaiting more updates

Tom

@666philb
freememapplet_tray v2.7.2, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=821801#821801 contains an updated "compile" script that works on tahrpup. This "compile" script should also work for older versions of "freememapplet_tray".

Thanks for sharing your experiences with Tahr regarding downloading problems.

I like Tahr too when I sense how it appears to be snappy and fast generally. But when it comes to trying to downloading files ... some sites are ok. Some are ok for the first file that I download then it starts to get stuck for the next files that I want to download. Some sites ... downloading will only reach a certain percentage (eg 3%) then stops there and refuses to download more until time out. This is the first time I am facing this problem.

I noticed that your wifi driver is also RTL8188xx just like mine. Maybe, this is the problem. I do however think that RTL8188 is a commonly used wifi hardware for netbooks.

Also hoping for a version of Tahr will work on my old netbook.

unfortunatly, I am using the PAE version.

Tahrpup 6.0 PAE was the second puppy I tried that would actually run out of the box with this machine (Slacko 5.7.0, being the first).

The non-PAE's seem to not work well here, (generally a kernel problem?) Video drivers have been the biggest problem. Most every thing I've tried just gives me very poor graphics if not a blank screen.

Once the updated (and stable) .iso is released, I'm going to try that.

I see you are using the new PPM in 6.0.1
The latest version 1.1 I think is ready for wider use Wink

666philb,

Something you may want to keep track of for the Tahrpup bug fixes.

Openssl update to 1.0.1k

I updated packages in PPM and installed openssl and libssl:

Code:
# openssl version -b
built on: Fri Jan  9 17:52:35 UTC 2015

Is it the last patch?

That's not how problems get resolved. There are two ways that this issue could be handled:

1. I take an hour to download the PAE development environment and rebuild the driver.

2. You take a few minutes to download a copy of Tahrpup NON-PAE and test the driver posted above.

Here is an alternate build of the rtl8188ee driver to test. It is specifically for Tahrpup NO-PAE k3.14.20.

Thanks rcrsn51 for the driver. I will test it soon.

In window7 , I noticed that my wifi driver is reported as

RTL8188CE

and in another location (driver details), it is reported as

RTL8192CE.sys

Q. Is rtl8188eee the same?

Thanks

Run these commands:
Code:
lspci -nnk
lsmod

What PCI wireless driver is being loaded?

thanks bigpup
openssl & libssl updated in bugfixes.
Note that ubuntu patch version 1.0.1f to the same level as 1.0.1k and it will always report as 1.0.1f version.. use
Code:
openssl version -a

to see actual build time

watchdog,
that's the latest in ubuntu updates see changelog here
http://pkgs.org/ubuntu-14.04/ubuntu-updates-main-i386/openssl_1.0.1f-1ubuntu2.8_i386.deb.html
