That log is from a boot yesterday, no savefile was used or created.

I may be able to re-engineer it tho.

Trying the swapped kernel now... hang on...

EDIT: kernel swap didn't work. Will make a 2nd post in a minute with xorg.conf...

Here you go... I think this is the one I was using... pretty close if not exact.

could you boot again and grab /tmp/xerrs.log and /var/log/messages
copying them to root might be easiest ....then grab them from the savefile with a working pup
cp /tmp/xerrs.log /root
cp /var/log/messages /root

you might want to PM them to me in case they have ip address etc

starhawk,

Maybe something here will help you:

Tried the kernel command line thingy, didn't work :(

Dangit.

It's half past two, I think I'll turn in. More fun on the flip side, OK?

BUG REPORT

On that same troublesome hardware, booting with pfix=nox/b] causes an odd issue.

Note that I'm booting without a savefile here...

It runs through the usual init stuff, gets to asking me for a keyboard selection. I press [ENTER] to indicate a standard US keymap -- and it hangs with a blinking cursor. At this point, if I put my hand on the CPU heatsink, it's really really hot -- the CPU is caught in an endless loop.

Discovered this while 01micko was trying to help me out :)

Any CPU frequency or voltage settings in bios?
Heat sink dirty?
Bad thermal paste between heat sink and CPU?
Typical airflow problems?

If nothing else it will be good for this:

No, no, no, and no, in that order :P

I replaced the original thermal material (silicone pads, ugh) with a silver based paste (no, not Arctic Silver 5, something far cheaper and eBayish... but it's far better than the copper stuff!).

Heatsink is bent perforated copper sheet. No fan. Laughable, but it only has to dissipate seven watts (!) so it's okay.

I'm running it without the lid on the case anyways.

I was trying to upgrade the kernel in 6.0.3 CE.

I thought I would try out the 4.0.something kernel. I got the file downloaded and extracted the contents. I know that I need to put the two files I got somewhere on the USB drive that I am booting/running from but...

Do I just drag and drop and replace files as prompted to do so?

Thanks!

upgrading tahrpup kernel

#1020 Post by mikeslr »

Hi marlowe221,

Check your email first.

The unpacked upgraded kernel consists of two files: vmlinuz and zdrv_tahr_6.0.sfs. You substitute them for the current files of similar names. Although you may have done the upgrade to 6.03, I think your zdrv,,,.sfs still bares the name zdrv_tahr_6.0,2.sfs.

I suggest that you create a folder, perhaps named "old kernel" and move your current zdrv_xxx.sfs and vmlinuz into it --just in case. Then move the new zdrv_xxx.sfs and vmlinuz to the same location as initrd. Rename zdrv_tahr_6.0.sfs to zdrv_tahr_6.0,2.sfs or whatever your old zdrv was named.

OK, that sounds easy enough! I noticed the difference in the names of the sfs files and figured a re-name might be necessary but I wasn't sure and thought it would be a good idea to ask first just in case.

Well, that didn't work sadly.

I get an error about not being able to find "puppy_tahr_6.0.2.sfs" but I don't really understand that. I didn't touch that file; it's still right where it's supposed to be....

The readme has some instruction about a "tail" command which I attempted to run but seems to have no discernible effect. What is that supposed to do???

Suggestion to add to Quickpet->Useful Pets

PupControl-2.6

Even better make it part of a normal Tahrpup.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

SSR now works in My tahrpup (enjoyed Christmas desktop)
This program uses:
Qt 4 for the graphical user interface
libav or ffmpeg (depending on your distribution) for video/audio encoding
elfhacks for hooking system functions for OpenGL recording

About switching the kernels

#1025 Post by Pelo »

PupControl-2.6 installed.I miss videocut icon in the multimedia menu. icon exists in pixmaps. What could i do to get it appearing ?
OK after reboot.
About switching the kernels, there is a special topic about that. Sure it's easy to do... not new.. The last kernel could be not better than older, they do different things.
The kernel should be chosen, regarding your computer and what you do with it. People should study more what is needed by them, to trim the fat instead of adding everything to the Puppy, due lack of time... or knowledge.
how to switch the kernels between puppy versions by jrb.
