Pidgin does not connect to Facebook

#1 Post by Rope »

I get this error:
Unable to validate certificate

The certificate for chat.facebook.com could not be validated. The certificate chain presented is invalid
I use Pidgin 2.10.7 (libpurple 2.10.7)

Is there anything I can do?

Thanks.

I don't think it's an SSL problem as much as it has to do with removing a cert. Older, but a possibility.

Yes, the method.. good.

Though I feel the problem lies elsewhere, are your openssl & openssl-solibs @ v1.0.1i?

# openssl version -a
OpenSSL 1.0.1f 6 Jan 2014
built on: Mon Jan 13 17:47:29 CST 2014

All used to work fine. I don know why Facebook does not work now.

I searched PPM for SSL and found an Ssl-certificate-fix 0.0.1 that is not installed, is it important?

For those libs I asked about (update PPM), it's always good to have the latest.

Then try what's explained in the fourth (& possibly fifteenth) post of my link.

Sans lock.. Tools >> page info >> security.

Plus, you should have a Pidgin debug log.. Post this item.

I'll wait for your reply before suggesting plan B..

I see PPM has a *patched* v2.10.9.. Upgrade and retry. Barring failure, resort back to my previous post..

I don see "patched" in v2.10.9 in PPM. I installed and fails to load due to missing dependencies.

I think the problem is that facebook certificate expired 24 sept. I tried to update certificates from other websites but failed.

I've noticed someone on the Pidgin Support mailing list has also been having problems connecting to Facebook:

https://pidgin.im/pipermail/support/201 ... 28154.html

I won't link to the entire discussion, but he's recently posted a follow-up message that he believes has solved his problem:
As an additional update to this: I changed the "Advanced -> Connection
security" option from "Use encryption if available" to "Requires encryption"
and it obtained a new certificate and everything now works fine. Thanks for
looking into this for me.

It probably couldn't hurt to try doing that, at any rate. You can always change the setting back if it doesn't work.

Edit: If you're looking for Pidgin 2.10.9, you can always try the builds I link to in my sig. The dependencies should all be available from the first post of that thread.

Makoto , I tried "Requires encryption" (wihtout restart) and did not work.

Then I updated to 2.10.9 and it works, It seems a new certificate installed, I don't know why now it works.

Thanks!
