How to use Davicom USB Ethernet adapter in USB 1.1? (Solved)

Hi everyone,

I'm almost a total noob at Linux in general.

I am in possession of a very old Toshiba Satellite 1800-400 laptop which doesn't have an Ethernet port; it has a 56k modem, DVD-ROM, 15GB HDD and it's been upgraded to 512MB RAM. Trident CyberBlade graphics chip. http://www.toshiba.co.uk/discontinued-p ... -1800-400/

I tried a few distros, but most of them lead to a black screen because the Trident CyberBlade/i1 driver crashes xorg. I played with the ACPI boot options until I got Wary Puppy installed, then edited xorg.conf to include the NoDDC as specified by http://michaelminn.com/linux/toshiba1800/

I then updated the BIOS from 1.50 to 2.20 and tried Precise Puppy Retro again. I needed the following boot options to boot from the Live CD:

Then I needed to write the following into xorg.conf by hand:

My friend has loaned me a USB Ethernet adapter (the device shows up as a DAVICOM) which worked without any problems at his house, so I inserted that and although Network Wizard detects a live network at my house it doesn't receive a DHCP address using SNS or Network Wizard. Strangely, if I use Frisbee I receive an address on a different subnet to other clients, even though I am wired directly to the correct router. However, I still can't seem to reach beyond the router; web pages don't load and traceroute just loops around my own subnet.

I have set the DNS servers to the router and to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, but I still don't receive any Internet.

I tried changing my Cat 6 cable to a Cat 5 with no joy.

FYI, I am now triple-booting XP with Wary and Precise Puppies and all of them work ATM.

I will copy and paste some Hardware Reports into a reply.

I will try to load Wireshark and debug the Internet problem some more, but if you have any ideas how I can get a connection please spill.

USB Ethernet adapter

The packets are getting all bent out of shape and I think it's loaded the wrong driver. :oops:

Do you mean that it worked in HIS machine at HIS house or in YOUR machine at HIS house?

Your machine only has USB1.1. That might not be fast enough to run your Ethernet adapter.

:idea: You're dead right, rcrsn51; the USB device is advertising itself as 10/100 but only operating at USB1.1. I solved the problem in XP by changing the interface to 10baseT full duplex on the SR9600 driver, but I'm still trying to figure this out in Puppy.

I see that ifconfig has a media option, but I'm getting an error message when I try to use it.

edit: I did it with ethtool and got some improvement, although my router immediately became rather unstable..... :s

I have often used a davicom usb ethernet adapter on usb 1.1 without problems. (Wasn't testing streaming video though - just basic surfing). What response do you get if you do the following:
ping 8.8.8.8

ps: I don't see any davicom driver loaded in your list above (maybe i missed it). My Davicom requires me to "modprobe dm9601" before it will work.

According to "modinfo dm9601", this is a USB1.1 device. So that's not the problem.

This code cures the corrupted packets:

ethtool --change eth0 speed 10 duplex full autoneg off
The Davicom must be the Unknown USB 2.00 device in the background (see screenshot).

I'm sure that before I upgraded the BIOS it had Legacy USB disabled, but it shows as enabled now.

Without using ethtool, pinging 8.8.8.8 only gets responses from my own host (and occasionally the router) with response times of 3000ms.

Also attaching a Wireshark capture; please note that my default gateway and subnet should be 192.168.0.1/24. Hosts 192.168.0.12 and 192.168.0.17 were Windows machines with no problems.
