I recommend this smallish (3MB) command line utility which support the conversion of 15 file types to text. Good for converting ebook files like epub, mobi, etc.. It also doubles as a text splitting utility which works well. This is Windows based but works with Wine. Writing script files to use it with Puppy is easy. Google balabolka and download the utility from the site.
