PostPosted: Tue 19 Aug 2014, 16:26    Post subject:  Ink level on printers (SOLVED)
Subject description: Can it be checked with Puppy?

In spite that computers and printers appeared as mere aids that were managed by others and which I never had to administer during the last two decades of my working life, I must admit that during the 1990s I was very influenced by the propaganda of some companies that were connected to them.
The latter is probably what caused that my first and few personal experiences as a user were linked to Canon Printers and to operative systems, spreadsheets and word processors that were promoted by M$.
When in November 2011 I decided to free myself from M$, I had been using Puppy occasionally for 33 months and I was already the owner of a CANON PIXMA iP1800 printer.
Since I engaged in this self commitment I have succeeded in almost completely dropping the use of M$ products and I have spent most of my time with computers (which is a great part of the day) changing my text files into abiword files, my spreadsheets into gnumeric files, and in trying to make Slacko my unique operative system.
From November 2011 to November 2012 I have spent less than 1% of my computing time with M$ products and since November 2012 I haven't used them at all.

But, though my Slacko 5.3.3 is making my Canon printer work with the help of CUPS 1.4.6 and canon-ip1800-3.00-i486.pet I haven't been able to make it check the ink level on my cartridges as I used to do in the age of M$XP. And that is something I truly miss.
As a matter of fact, when I click on the Maintenance list on the http://localhost:631/printers/CANONIP1800 page, the only options I get are these:
    Print Test Page
    Clean Print Heads
    Print Self Test Page
    Pause Printer
    Reject jobs
    Move All jobs
    Cancel All jobs
.
And, as you can imagine none of them provides me with the ink level on my printer.

My questions are these:
Is there any way of making my system read the ink levels of my printer?
Am I longing for the unreachable or can my desires be satisfied?
Your feedback will be highly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

I was trying to describe the site from where I downloaded the little program that has enabled me to know the ink level of my printer's cartridges and to thank rcrsn51 for having added the attachment from where I downloaded it.

The place is at http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=83002545&t=26407

The GUI says my cartridges are 0% full.
That is consistent with what I thought about them.

I will change them for new ones and perform a double check.

Thank you rcrsn51!!

You have messed up the [url][/url] Tags.

Don't use spaces in these tags and don't use CR or Line Feed in these tags.

This was your mess:

PostPosted: Tue 19 Aug 2014, 23:46    Post subject:  Thank you both
Subject description: To rcrsn51 and RSH

rcrsn51:
Thanks for providing me with a tool I really needed.
It is working very well.
I changed the cartriges and inkGUI is showing they are 100% full.
After I have replied to RSH, I will add "[SOLVED]" to the post subject.

RSH:
Thank you very much for helping me to understand what happened.
I thought I had messed up the url tags but I didn't understand exactly how.
I still don't understand some things about this incident.

If I go back to the "unbodied" messages and click on the "Edit" button I can still read what I wanted to say.
But I don't know how to detect signs of carriage return nor of line feed.

If I learn how to detect them, can I still go back, correct what is wrong and make my messages visible?

Thank you for your time! Smile
